@@mariopoggi6510 I make sure I visit several times every summer. Main street has changed but in many ways it hasn't. I remember the sussex theater on Main Street
@@UnclePaulsBeatlesPopPlayhouseThat's owned by Drama Geeks Studio now and they put on several productions a year. Main Street will soon be revitalized again with new sidewalks, street pavings and streetlights. Stay tuned.
How marvelous to see this slice of life from a different time. Things have certainly changed, so why do I thrill to to see the places I recognize from the present in these films? Beats me - But thanks for publishing - great job…
Great Stuff. My grandparents in my mother's side of the family bought in Lk. Neepaulin back in 1955 the year Just before I was born. On my father's side we have Wallings in our lineage and the new RT23S is Walling Avenue. They date back to Sarah Welles who started Hamptonburgh NY in 1704. I find it amazing that one side got here first in the late 1700's and left in the 1890's and the other side made here in the 1950's. There is tale in the family that the Wallings owned Pinkel funeral home even before it was a bank and some descendants were born there and in on my mother's side my my GreatGrandMother, both my GrandParents and my Mother were laid out there . May they Rest in Peace. That one hell of a circle to me in Sussex NJ PS Sussex Rural Electric is still the BEST Electric Company around!!!!!!!!!
Heartbreaking how Sussex borough looks today. The higher ups don’t care. It’s sad. I feel heart-wrenched every time I drive through Hamburg, Ogdensburg, and Sussex. Idk why but it’s something in the loft that gives me feelings of sadness and hopelessness. I swear it’s saddening.
Really cool video. I was a young boy when I lived there in the mid to late 60s and this video brought back some fond memories. Was the school at 15:22 the one that used to be up on the hill on Harrison St. The school was no longer used but I can remember playing in that schoolyard when I was young. At 16:15 the move theater by the fountain. I remember going there and seeing The good, the bad, and the ugly around 1966 or 1967. I can also remember watching Planet of the apes around 1968. Thanks for posting, videos like this are a real treasure.
Mario, this is wonderful! Those were the days. Here we can see some people we only heard about, walking and laughing, smoking a stogy and doing their Farmer's National banking. This is a treasure.
This reminds me how much community we have lost with the advent of smartphones, ipads and covid shutdowns. We barely know each other. My community is not my immediate neighbors but the members of my church and even that was threatened by lockdowns. However, I think Jefferson Twp does a good job of fostering a sense of community dispute its large geography.
Nice to see the Kuser Mansion. A shame the state let it go to crap. They should have leased it out to a private company for a resort. Have family that have been in Sussex County since the war. The Revolutionary War.
@@mariopoggi6510 what happened? Many folks there that live in this area now seem so poorly dressed and drugged out. I’ve have no hatred against them whatsoever, but how did villages or towns like Sussex and Hamburg go from having well dressed and sophisticated looking folks to many (not all) trashy looking ones who look as if they’ve never taken a shower. No hatred for them, but how did the way of life shift so quickly and radically. Any explanation and can you tell me precisely when it began? Does it have to do with poor folks From other parts of N.J. settling in these areas and creating safe havens for themselves?
@@wrestlingfan-yq1wh I think that it culminated over many years. Time travels on, trends change and some areas start to become havens for the less fortunate. Single family homes in the Boro were bought up by people of other parts of the state and beyond and chopped them up into multi-unit apartment rentals to take advantage of the Section-8 laws getting rental money direct from the government so lower income people began moving in. The feeling of community eroded as the Boro became a revolving door of rental nomads. The community could no longer support the stores on Main Street so they began to leave. There were others factors also of course, but we are we we are now, it is what it is. Many people dropped the ball along the way. But....there is hope and we are trying to turn things around here. It took many years to get here and it will take some time to get back but the effort has already begun several years ago. Keep the faith.
@@mariopoggi6510 I live nearby. Do you have any information on the history of Stockholm, NJ or any old footage of it. For example, did the neighborhood of Deer Trail even bestand(exist) back then? Its the neighborhood to the right after you drive beyond Tony’s pizzeria. I wonder if any folks lived there around this exact time in the 1940’s? And if so do you have any footage of it or maybe more of Franklin, Hamburg, ogdensburg, and so on and so forth? Thank you by the way
@@wrestlingfan-yq1wh sorry I have nothing on Stockholm and no footage of the other towns that you list. Your best bet is to contact their historical society's individually on Facebook. Good luck.
