We are thrilled to announce the completion of the “House Shadow,” a tiny home project that exemplifies the principles of the industrial circular economy. This innovative home contains 56% reused and recycled materials, setting a new standard for sustainable living.
Here's how the House Shadow compares to average detached homes:
✔ Needs 84% less construction materials
✔ Occupies 43% less land
✔ Consumes 53% less energy
✔ Causes 59% less greenhouse gas emissions per capita
The House Shadow was engineered and prefabricated by Aulis Lundell Oy using:
♻ Fossil-free steel by SSAB and Vesivek
- Modular solutions and load-bearing structures with lightweight Lundell-Profile building materials made with SSAB ZeroTM steel
- Parts of the façade feature color-coated standing seam profiles by Vesivek made with SSAB ZeroTM steel
♻ Sliding door solution by Liune Door & Durat
♻ Reused timber, left-over cement fibre boards, and bricks
♻ Old windows and doors from demolition sites
♻ Bathroom and kitchen surfaces and sinks from recycled plastics and sidestreams by Durat
♻ Insulation from recycled plastics by BEWI Group and recycled glass by Isover
♻ Roofing: Kerabit Nature®
♻ AI-powered ventilation by AirFi
♻ Flooring from old fish nets by Forbo Flooring Systems
♻ Chipboards from recycled sawdust by Koskisen Oyj
♻ Reused concrete paving from recycled ingredients by Saint-Gobain
♻ Appliances and equipment from second-hand markets
Join us in celebrating this milestone as we continue to push the boundaries of sustainable construction and showcase the beauty that can emerge from the shadows of our linear economy.

Curious to know the design consideration for the use of welded c-channel sections to create I-beams. Was that a weight consideration or better structural than a simple lightweight I-beam?

Thank you for your question and nice that you noticed that detail. The aim was to make the House Shadow as carbon free as possible, so we tried as much as possible to use Zero-steel, which is, as the name suggest, carbon neutral. However, we didn't yet have Zero-steel in thick enough gauges, seen from a structural point of view, so the solution was to weld two C-channels into I beams. This solution also appealed to the architect and owner of the house visually.
