In this video we target Suwannee Bass in South Georgia for the Georgia Bass Slam. In this state, Suwannee Bass are only native to the Ochlockonee River drainage and the Withlacoochee and Alapaha rivers in the Suwannee River drainage.
Suwannee Bass feed heavily on crayfish but they also eat fish, insects, and other crustaceans including juvenile blue crabs in the freshwater tidal section of rivers.
Average size for the Suwannee Bass is around 10 inches and they max out around 17 inches. The IGFA all-tackle world record weighed 3 lbs 14 oz and was caught from the Suwannee River in Florida.
I hope you like the video and as always...

Those south Georgia streams with Cypress trees and hanging moss are always such a good looking area to fish. I only went one 1 suwanee bass adventure last year but got a 2.5 pounder. Awesome video as always man!

I assume hybridization isn't a concern with the Suwanee bass because of the lack of spotted/alabama bass down there?
@ShoalBandit
@ShoalBandit Год назад
I think it's always a concern because it just takes one person to start the extinction process. All it takes is one person with a creek/pond in their backyard and those fish will be in that drainage forever. Right now, that seems unlikely because of the distance to a "source population" like a big impoundment but the Ocmulgee River in Macon is not that far from Valdosta. In a few years, decades, etc... they might not have to go that far so the danger will most likely increase. As more homes are built close to the water, as more people move into rural areas, etc... the danger will most likely increase.

Thanks again for taking us on an adventure with you. Loving the videos. Question: Have you encountered any gators down in that area while kayak fishing?

Thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment! Every river in this state has alligators below the Fall Line. Most of the ones I've seen in the upper Withlacoochee are small but that doesn't mean they all are. The bigger ones are often more wary, so you rarely see them. I've fished around big ones in lakes/rivers from Texas to North Carolina and never had a problem. I stay in the boat though I'm not wading or swimming. I'm more worried about bumping into a big wasp nest TBH. lol

Love these videos. Your commentary on the fish is fascinating and gives so much insight to what your are catching. Even the chain pickerel.

I really hope you keep it up on RU-vid. This reminds me of KN Fishing Smarts. It's very informative and valuable for those of us interested in ecology and catching multiple species. As far as I know you have the only video outlining the Slam.

How do you keep your caper kayak from moving while fishing? Do you use an anchor?
@ShoalBandit
@ShoalBandit 11 месяцев назад
Most of the areas I'm fishing in this video don't have a lot of current. I'm actually paddling upstream, fishing as I go so the current kind of stalls the kayak in place long enough to make a few casts. The Caper also has a more rounded hull at the bow and is only 11 feet long, so it turns faster and with less effort than most 'fishing' kayaks. I talk about this in The Fishing Kayak video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uNpHm-VuvmQ.htmlfeature=shared If there's a lot of current, I usually try to plant one or both feet on the bottom and/or wade (as long as it's not mud).

Thank you@@ShoalBandit I also have a ocean kayak caper and had a difficult time fishing the Withlacoochee. I'll do what you do, paddle upstream and cast while the kayak is stalled. I still need to learn how to stand.
@ShoalBandit
@ShoalBandit 11 месяцев назад
The Caper is only 31 inches wide so it's one of the more difficult kayaks to stand in. Of course, 20 years ago we didn't have very many options, but a narrow kayak is easier to paddle upstream against the current. It also makes the kayak lighter so you can carry/drag it places you can't take a heavier kayak.@@dedicatedfisherman
