Could humans merge with AI? Is consciousness an unavoidable byproduct of sophisticated intelligence?
Susan Schneider, an internationally renowned academic, distinguished philosopher, and author of the successful book “Artificial You: AI and the Future of the Mind”, will be hosted at the Athens Science Festival platform to discuss these pivotal issues that will concern us more and more in the near future.
During her talk titled “AI and the Future of the Mind”, Schneider will present the philosophical implications of reproducing consciousness by artificial means, and in particular, the ethical and social repercussions of this technology that often tend to be overlooked.
The discussion will be moderated by Vassilis Stamatopoulos.
Susan Schneider writes about the nature of the self and mind, especially from the vantage point of issues in philosophy, AI, cognitive science, and astrobiology. She appears frequently on television shows on stations such as PBS and The History Channel, as well as keynoting conferences at places such as Harvard and Cambridge. She is currently working on a new book on the shape of intelligent systems (with W.W. Norton).

If I save each part of the brain that is being replaced by an artificial chip during the five-year period and assemble them when the digital version is done, which one of them is me? Both of them will view this from their own perspectives, and to retire the biological parts would be murder. If a digital version of me is living in the cloud, it would be no different from being a copy of a copy each time it transfers itself. That means consciousness dies in the process of being transferred, and a new consciousness that believes itself to be the original emerges. If I can be at more than one place at a time, then who am I?
