My underarms thank you, Suzanne. I have used this method on several sweaters now and it works like a charm. Your video and your commentary are very helpful. I still can't do it without referring to the video, but I guess that will come with practice. Underms used to be the "ugly" part of my knitting projects but now I'm proud to show them.

I am a 15+ years crocheter, and a relatively new knitter. (I needed a new challenge, and boy did I get it!) For everything knit related that is terribly confusing for me, I'll type it in the RU-vid search bar and try and locate videos uploaded by you that are related to what I am having problems with, and EVERY TIME I watch one of your video's, everything just clicks! I love how you point every stitch out and explain why and how you do certain stitches and I LOVE it! I need that in-depth breakdown to understand what I'm looking at and how to conquer such things like this video with holes in the underarm joins, and much more! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!

Thank you so much for your clear explanations, the way you show what is happening in the fabric, and how you get into the nitty-gritty of why you recommend your techniques. In all my projects, the help from your tutorials has elevated my knitting far beyond what they otherwise would be! I feel like being able to finish these projects well, especially in these areas that show "rookie mistakes" such as armholes and edges, makes knitting so much more enjoyable because I feel confident that I will love the end result. Thank you so much! I finally started my first sweater after platonically knitting for 15 years and your videos are incredibly informative and helpful. My sweater armhole still has a very slight gap in it, but I think that’s due to the YO eyelets and my general inexperience. Will try to identify how to completely eliminate it on the other arm, and will just use the tail to close the gap on my first sleeve since it’s right next to the picked up stitches. ❤️

I'm working on my first raglan now. Everything was a breeze... Then I I started the sleeves and went "uhhh....." I tried to close it myself, and I was on the right track with pulling up bars and knitting together, but I was still getting big holes. I watched some other videos that didn't really tell me anything, but yours was very helpful. I'm certain I'll be able to finish my first sweater now after watching this. And, best of all, I can say "That was easy! Why did I put off trying a sweater for so long??"

@sukubo313
@sukubo313 6 лет назад
Thanks, Suzanne. I'm a very solitary kind of person, and I don't know even one other knitter in person. And it's difficult for me to leave my home, so I've never shopped at an LYS. That makes it hard for me to gauge (pun intended) just how I'm coming along as a knitter. At first, I felt (pun unintended) like I picked it up (ditto) very quickly. I was knitting a brioche scarf within a month, and double knitting within 3 months, for example. Now that I'm getting farther along, there's naturally less to learn and so I've slowed down in acquiring new techniques and skills, and it leaves me kind of confused as to just what my skill level is. I think I'm probably an "advanced intermediate" knitter, but saying that also makes me feel a little pretentious since I've only been doing it for 3 years. I work on my knitting for about 6-8 hours each day though, on average, so I do give a lot to it. I'm finally at the point where I'm very comfortable with sewn bind-offs, seaming/grafting, picking up, and other stuff that isn't knitting proper -- things that I really avoided as much as possible until a few months ago. I really need to work on getting a consistent gauge more than anything at this point. Incidentally, I did finish my first sweater and it turned out great -- armpits and all! I had to do things slightly differently that you did in this video, since I was working with a baby sweater and had much fewer stitches. After picking up and ssk'ing and k2tog'ing, I pulled up a new column of stitches with a crochet hook where I had just a bit of a hole left over. But after working in my ends, it all worked out well and looks good. I've watched multiple instructional videos from several different knitters, and I'm glad that I found your channel. Unlike with some other channels I'm not naming, I don't find myself saying "No, that's incorrect" or "You're doing that in a really awkward way" as I'm watching. All of your videos I've seen make sense, are accurate and correct, and are easy to understand. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us!
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 6 лет назад
Wow! You sound like me, several years ago. I was what I call a "closet knitter". I didn't know anyone who knit and we didn't have any local knit stores. It was before RU-vid and everything I learned was either by trial and error or from books. I am so glad to be of help to you! Happy knitting.

Thanks so much - this was a huge help!! The only thing that was a little confusing is that the video cuts off when showing the two bars being put on the needle on the left side, so the first time I did this I only had the bar that is worked immediately. I tinked back when I got to the bar that I didn't pick up, though I think I'm realizing I could have just picked it up right then and there. The next time I did it the right side was incomplete and I still had a huge hole. So I just put the bar on the needle and did the sk. I had no idea if it would work, but it did!! Thank you so much for this video. I've always dreaded and avoided sleeves for this very reason, nothing I tried ever worked - and now I have a method that works!! I'm sure I'll be referencing your video every time.

could you please correct the skip at two bars you lost me at this point
@lkogirl9869
@lkogirl9869 5 лет назад
@@ruthdoyle3572 if you see it again you will probably understand when, after the break at approx 4:20, Suzanne again points out which stitches are which. THEN , as I gather, there is a unknitted loop which is dealt with as an SSK at the the end of the round (Approx 8:20) ....and all possible holes concealed.
@andreamiller6200
@andreamiller6200 Год назад
@@lkogirl9869 I have been watching and re-watching and I have to agree with you that the bar to the left of the final picked up backwards loop cast on does remain un-knit on the right hand needle until the round is worked around and then the un-knit 2 bars to the left of the sleeve side are worked as "SK" then as "K2tog" with the first stitch re-mounted. Then it looks like that bar leftward of the last backwards loop cast on pickup, once it is reached, is worked as "SK". So far, so good. But my problem is what do I do when I only have a single backwards loop cast on stitch with only 1 stitch to pick up? Looks like I may need at least 2 backwards loop cast on stitches to have sufficient stitches to work Suzanne's method. Thoughts and ideas? @Knitting with Suzanne Bryan, will page you for input!

Depends on what you mean by how you usually weave in tails. Search my channel for "weaving in ends" and you will see how I weave in ends. It may help you a lot. Thank you!

OMG, I did it! Finally, after more than too many years of frogged sweater knitting, I finally identified the V's correctly and picked up the correct number of stitches, no holes either. I can't believe the end count was correct. Yea!

Hello from England, Suzanne! I love your videos, the clearest, calmest tutorials on the internet. You’ve saved my project yet again! My pattern said cast on underarm and then pick up stitches but it didn’t say exactly how, and the result was a mess with massive hole. Then I found your 2 videos on this and unpicked it and started again which was a lot of work but worth it, it’s turned out beautiful….. I just wish I’d got your advice first 😂

I have two sweaters on hooks right now. One is worked in the round bottom up and one is worked flat in pieces. These are my first ever sweaters so I'm saving this video to my knit folder to come back to when I get to the sleeves of my in-the-round sweater. Thank you for this video. I'm subscribing. Your camera position on your needles is perfect to see exactly what you are doing so that a student can replicate it. And you are not knitting too fast. This makes replicating your style easier if one chooses to try on varying styles.

I come here whenever Im making a sweater. I dont make that many so I never remember how this is done. Thank God you recorded it on video for us all . This sweater uses a chained alpaca and knits loosely to 12sts per 10cm so I wasnt sure this would work as well as it did on the smaller tigher knits but it did! Im so happy because holes in loose knits just mess up the whole project . Thanking you again Suzanne O:-)

I haven't quite made it to a sweater yet, but I'm working on some fingerless handwarmers at the moment and the pattern uses this technique to ensure there are no holes in the thumb crease. I was having an awful time trying to figure out exactly what stitches it was telling me to pick up, but this made it super clear! Thank you!

Suzanne: Thank you so much for these techniques that give knitted garments a 'proper' finished look. Knitting is such an elegant skill. I am basically self taught groping for ideas and techniques. You fill in the "holes" of skills not brought out in instructions. I mean like this video and picking up stitches and decreasing at armhole, etc. Now I'm an avid sewer, so I can tell when the knitting does not look right. I could say professional but that is over used. You remind me so much of my grandfather's family from Iowa, especially my Cousin Twila, my name sake. Thank you again for wanting to share your knowledge; WHAT A TREASURE! Keep on being yourself! Awesome!
