Just for fun I'll share this . I got to Zen Center in Nov. 1973 age 18. One night a Resident took me to Tommy Dorsey's room.......inside...... there were about 40 Zen Students watching ' Kung Fu ' on a little TV !! ( all in good meditation posture, of course ). One for the Books.
@@ObakuZenCenter Oh yeah, I read the book too. I later went to a 2 day event with Baker Roshi, with some trepidation, but it was good. I asked Alan Senauke about SFZC feelings about Baker, he said it's mixed feelings. But for me he's a historical figure and I can say I studied with both Sojun Roshi and Baker Roshi.
Katagiri Roshi left San Francisco after Suzuki Roshi's passing because he understood Richard Baker. You can feel Baker's arrogance in this video. I think a primary characteristic I have observed in mature Soto teachers is humility.
@@togeika Technically speaking - anyone who is not completely enlightened is arrogant, to some extent. We can at least be forgiving of Baker for having the intent to train & rid himself of that burden - whether he is successful or not.
