The Suzuki Ciaz was first launched in SA about 4 years ago as the medium sized sedan option in the local Suzuki range. We tested an example at that time and were highly impressed.
Since that time, I have believed that the Ciaz is, and remains, the best kept secret on the local new car market. Offering value, space, comfort and exceptional economy in the albeit unpopular sedan segment of the market. Also bear in mind that the sector has some great and popular contenders such as the Corolla Quest, Polo Vivo, Hyundai Accent and Nissan Almera.
Recently, the Ciaz underwent a facelift with minor styling changes. More important was the small increase in engine capacity from 1.4 to 1.5L. An increase from 70 to 77kW and 130 to 138Nm may not sound like much, but on the road these increases feel much more substantial.
At the same time, the interior was also updated and the most important change here is the fitment of a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity.
In GLX trim level, add in leather trim, climate control air-con with rear vents, auto headlights, cruise control and many other features. There is a lower spec GL version available which is mechanically identical and with a R30 000 saving on the price.
Suzuki cars have always been renowned for fuel economy and once again, the Ciaz delivered. Even with the extra power on hand, and taking the opportunity for both commuting as well as an open-road trip during the test we ended the week showing 5.7L/ 100km on the standard trip computer.
Having earlier referred to the Ciaz as the best kept secret, I have deliberately kept the price till last. The GLX, as tested, is currently priced at R244 900 and this includes a 3 year/ 60 000km service plan as standard.
