The upper and lower rollers on the DR650SE have a design purpose to protect the bike from chain damage, which is why they exist. I'll be replacing both of mine with the sealed ball bearing type so they always work.
If you remove the top roller (which some people recommend) you may want to consider putting an engine casing protector in place.

Thanks! I really enjoy your technical analysis of the systems on the DR650. It is nice to know why these bikes were designed as they are.

I have a curious mind..."how does that work?" In 1984 I actually built my own spring-loaded chain tensioner for my Yamaha DT175 in my dads shed. Worked perfectly :)

I followed the herd and took my top chain roller out. What you say makes sense so I may put it back. Thanks for the info 👍

A lot of people do take it out. My view is those Suzuki Engineers are pretty smart so they must have a reason for it. After all it's been a fitment for 25 years! The only picture I have seen of one broken is where the frame was internally pretty corroded. As long as it is in tight (bloody tight!), well greased, rotates freely and your chain is properly adjusted you should be ok. It gets a lot of work in deceleration so it's stopping the chain whipping forward. Good luck with whatever you decide 😀👍

I agree. Do you have a newer video where you installed sealed ball bearing rollers?

I thought I mentioned it in the video - maybe not! I talked to a few people about these "sealed" bearings and the thinking was they are not really "sealed" and worse than the original bushings. If any water gets into them it can't escape and the bearing seizes quickly. Decision I made was to keep the original bushings and make sure that they are lubricated and can move freely. Keep them greased and the chain adjusted properly for trouble free riding.👍😀

Great investigation, I'm always a bit suspicious of the "bro-science" that pervades most communities whenever anything of a technical but hard to quantify nature is the topic of discussion. I've observed this phenomenon in computer programming, gardening, motorcycles, firearms, etc. I love to see and learn from people checking others' homework. I'm curious, what is your take on the reasoning so many people remove the upper roller in the first place: the fear that the chain whip will violently snap off the upper chain roller and then leave gaping hole/weakness in your frame, which admittedly seems to have happened to some unfortunate souls. I have to concede, when I bought my DR this was the first mod I made, but I am definitely curious about its validity.

As you note it’s happened to some people but Vince noted that was probably due to incorrect chain tension causing the chain to whip forward. If you do take the roller off I’d be investing in case protection. The chain whipping forward has to hit something…next stop…casing. I’m leaving it in and will do two things: 1. Check that the roller is rotating freely and not binding. It doesn’t get used as much as the lower one so it probably seizes. Keep it well greased. 2. Ensure chain tension is right. That will minimise forward whip. I won’t be buying “sealed” bearing ones. These seem to cause more problems and seize if any water gets into them. Suzuki engineers are smart and they put the top roller in for a reason 🤷🏼‍♂️

They make noise, they're annoying, and I removed both upper and lower for mostly street and light off-road use.

Not sure I'd go that far 😯 but if it works for you...😀👍
