Is 8psi too high?

Should't be. But they sure look more inflated.

@@ludicator I usually run them between 6 and 10 but this particular trip was 8psi. The tires are load range c and at 0 they still hold shape on the light samurai. My issue here was a combination of short wheel base and stock gears.

We were sitting at 10 psi with open diffs. Is it going to risk popping a bead that low?

Are you in the central California area? It would be awesome for someone to kinda show us the ropes!

Don't worry about somebody showing you the ropes. Get there and learn. You did great here, you'll be fine. I think you've learned that tires and lockers do more than almost everything else.
