Did you know Gladius in Latin means sword? Suzuki chose that name for its modern & somewhat funky take on their long running and hugely successful SFV650. Dave takes a look at this bike in this week's Road Test

I just got a 2013 one, and I love it.

I'm currently learning to ride on this exact bike. Really easy bike for beginners. After a couple of seconds you already feel comfy and natural. I still have alot to learn but the bike on it's own is really nice! Could do with some styling tweaks though if i might add..

Robert Furman good luck! i had my third lesson today. had the oppertunity to open it up a bit. it's got some torque at low revs.. my god.. but hey, i'm not used to a speeding bike. so prehaps in the near future i might think differently when i've ridden other bikes

Suzuki needs to do something about the seat . very little padding other than that a good solid bike.

Not sure where you received your info, in regards to the SFV650 forks being fully adjustable, well they are not, just another low budget crude damping fork like the SV650 bikes of old & others have used, with a preload adjuster added. It seems they work surprisingly better than they have a right too, but only when the proper springs are installed in the bike & befitting the riders weight, or when they are on fairly smooth pavement surface roads, while being used, anything else and they don't work so great, even more so with age. Other then that, the bike is like a gem in the rough, it has a great motor design, and has history record to prove it just that, not only is it toughf , and makes good horsepower & TQ, its great also in the fuel useage department, in spite of it being a little heavier bike than it's predecessor, the SV650 & the Dl650. One thing that could make the motor better, is a larger version, somthing in the 750cc to 800cc range, especially in the heavier touring adventure type bikes, like the Wee strom / DL650 series. Now heres an idea that maybe Susuki might want to hear, sell this model, and sell it as the SFV650R type with a true fully adjustable suspension, using parts from the GSXR line;-) The statement, that started this long written post in the first place.. It's something to dream about, or at the very least think about; anybody out there listening ? BTW this is a good solid bike for the most.....yl

The cheaper parts keep the price down and I think that was Suzuki's main focus. The target buyer for this bike would probably not be adjusting the settings anyway. They just want to get on and ride.

True about some, still they should be a hoot to ride, even if it's because of the seat, is a torcher rack, more so than on the SV. The price was so high for a while people almost stopped buying them, at least now with competition from bikes like the Yam FZ-MT-07, they dropped the price, now that is good news.

OccasionallyEvil Just wanted you to know I like the bike, even almost bought one, had not been for the seat, and I told the dealers that, they did not even mention there is a comfort seat, if they had done so, I would own one today. Do have a Blue K6 SV650 naked so I indeed really like the motors in the bikes, even with the low budget suspensions, and they happen to be the same front forks for both the SV & SFV bikes from 2 gen SV up, they should be lower priced though, after all they have little R&D money in these bikes, sometimes they can be found for around 5K+ dollars new, even now I looked them up last night, for 2013 / 2014. Seems Yamaha's FZ-07 has the market area where I live. Really the Yamahas FZ-07 suspension is no better, they do have better 4 piston front brakes thou, still need better pads & lines to get the most stopping power, and that goes for both bikes, more so for the SFV....yl

***** do u mean torture rack?
@ylism
@ylism 9 лет назад
dave jh Sure do ! That would describe the way the seat felt to me, even sat on 3 SFV bikes, all on different days too, but to be fair I had been riding my sv for a good while just prior to each one, and its seat is not the best in the world. Try one for yourself for 15 mins, and see what you think;-) but most magazine reviewers say just about the same thing, just using different words, unless it has the comfort seat installed, and they do on some every now and again, seen one used for test rides bikes.

The music ruins the first minute of these videos. I'm glad they've replaced this model with the new SV. Much nicer.

New SV's are good. But expensive and they look like a bike from 1995... :( So I will choose Gladius or XJ6.

gyurxi551 That's why the new sv650 is selling well people liked the old look over this new one. I agree with other people the sv650 is a better bike. However the used market has a ton of these bikes super cheap and I can't help but sell my ninja 250 and pick on of these bad boys out! I have a 2007 ninja 250 so trust me this bike is better looking than my ninja lol

Will it fit tall riders? I’m 6’1 and about to buy a 2009 Gladius. If the contour of the gas tank doesn’t fit my legs, that’ll be a deal breaker.

I'm 173 cm 5ft 7inch if Google is correct. I doubt the bike fits you anything above 6 ft will feel cramped I suspect

Is it good for tall people? I'm 6'3 and on top of that I have relatively long legs.

I rode one today. I'm 5'6” with a 30” inseam. About 140 pounds. Feels like the bike is made for someone even smaller than me 😅 I also had a hard time fitting my foot under the gear shift lever, and my shoe size is 41..

@@mattiasgodeseth3645 yeah its definitely very small. I rode a couple different bikes and eventually went for an mt-07. Wanted to get a naked with 500-700 cc as my first bike 🤷🏻‍♂️

That wasn't much of a review at all. You just listed off a bunch of vague positive things about the bike. I wouldn't trust this.

A real biker needs no stinking gear indicator but a center stand would be nice to have.
@alking7049

Would this be a decent touring bike?
@goldpilgrim
@goldpilgrim 10 лет назад
I used an SV650 as a touring bike. Gladius has a major flaw in that respect;; NO CENTER STAND! I went coast -to coast more than once on the SV - center stand is a must.

KiQL KiQL I would agree about the seat, it's a torcher rack, as I call them, more like this +m+, I've been on 3 different bikes, in a weeks time to see if it was glitch, no not a glitch. Almost bought one, and the seat held me back, and the dealer did not even give me clue, there was two other seats available, that are much better.. So I still ride my K6 SV650 naked in blue, it's been a great bike, but it's seat is only an hour better than the SFV / Gladius, but you can get toughened up to it, and what you wear makes a big difference. About the touring issue, a vlogger on here, he rides a SV650 btw, his channel name is " drienkm " he rides his all over the place, and he is a funny guy too, I would recommend his channel ! His bike has no center stand, it doesn't slow him down a bit. My bike doesn't have one either, never seen a SV650 with one, that I can think of, but they can be bought aftermarket & installed, for those who must have one. lol
