For years, I've criticized Roy Jones Jr. for not going to Germany to fight dariusz michalczewski for the undisputed light heavyweight crown; Jones said he feared the politics & judges, and didn't wan't to go through the same shit he did in the '88 Olympics. After seeing this bullshit, I can see what Roy was talking about..
ottke was one of the most cowardly, over protected fighters of all time. i cant even call him a champion as a title that is bought and paid for doesn't make a champion.
@1:14, That knockdown that was ruled a slip..I remember one boxing columnest saying “The only thing Ottke slipped on was the front of Reid’s glove!” 😂😂
You know, I've been to Germany for a holiday, and I found it to be a beautiful country with great people. They're really nice. But as a boxing fan, I really don't know why their judges and officials have to be bad guys and continually treat visiting fighters like shit. They not only give boxing a bad name, but they make their nation look bad in the eyes of fans.
@huakklise you’re right! One boxing website posted a “top 10 worst decisions list” and put this fight on their list; but they also said “Ottke has enough stinking decisions to have his own top 10 list”! 🤣🤣
"What does Robin Reid have to do? They've gotta turn the lights out and give him a submachine gun." Sven Ottke is the worst champion I've ever seen. A shame that Jeff Lacy/Joe Calzaghe/Mikkel Kessler didn't get a chance to knock him out. Roger Tilleman should have his boxing referee license/boxing judge credentials revoked.
"After five rounds, Reid was told that he was well behind Ottke on all three judges scorecards. Reid, knowing he would have to knock Ottke out to win, went after the German, and after aggressively stalking and cornering him throughout the second half of the fight without being hit in return with anything significant, Reid retired to his corner and braced himself for the buggering he was about to endure." Pretty much sums it up don't you think 'mate'.
How must Reid have felt going back to his corner after the 6th. He hurt Ottke several times and had him down, yet lost the round due to a farcical point deduction.
Why am I not surprised about this fight happening in Germany in 2003. I don't know if it's still like that but around 2003 referees and judges in Germany were clearly paid. I will always remember the Eric Lucas vs Marcus Beyer fight.
Agree with you wholeheartedly. I read an article about this farce and the writer commented that 'The only thing Ottke slipped on was the end of Reid's glove.' Calzaghe would've lost to this guy. Hell, Kessler, Lacy and all the other super middleweights would've lost to this guy thanks to the frikkin judges. And I wonder what would've happened had Anthony Mundine not gotten KO'd by this guy. He was apparently in the lead when he got whacked.
Also Rudy Markussen gave Ottke a beating in some rounds and might have won that fight. I remember watching it. Ottke was nothing but a homegrown champion, he never dared fight outside Germany. He even boasted that he was gonna fight and beat Dariusz the Tiger but he never did.
Even the British Commentators said after the fight that yes, the ref was somewhat biased in favour of the champion but also Reid himself threw the fight away the last 6 rounds or so. I wonder will the poster here include these commentens by the likes of Steve Bunce and Richie Woodhall? (respected British boxing analyists)
Actually my dear the ref took the point for holding.. There was no one in the boxing world who thought ottke won this fight, and its the same story with many other Ottke fights.. Also the replays showed a knock down. No one believes you when you make a claim that Ottke was a true champion.. No one..
the ref tillemann, from belgium, never was in another championship fight, nor before neither after. Ottkes Manager Sauerland bought the ref, cause he knew ottke would get into big troubles. the whole affair was an unbelievable DAYLIGHT ROBBERY!
I remeber an article on the EastSide Boxing websight - sorry, but RU-vid doesn't allow posting websight links, so you gotta look it up yourselves! - dealing with the "Worst Decisions In Boxing," and it had this fight listed in it's top 10. It also said that Ottke couldv'e had a top 10 list of his fights ALONE!
This shows why Ottke will - in the immortal words of Smokey (Chris Tucker) on Friday - Never, NEVER, EVER-EVER-EVER-EVER-EVER, be considered an all-time great, despite his undefeated record. Corrupt, home-cooking calls from the ref/judges. Too scared shitless to venture out of his bedroom to fight...unbelievable.
Have you ever seen anything like this? Reid knocks him down, then gets a point deducted. Absolutely awful. A rond where Reid should be up 2 points, but ends up either equal or down 1.
The Reason why this guy hasn't included the rest of the rounds/fight is because anyone who watched this fight or read about this fight afterwards knows that Ottke took over the second half. The 6th round here was a bit dodgy, but the overall scroing wasn't. A draw would've been fair, The First half mostly belonged to Reid, and the 2nd half to Ottke. In the end Ottke one a very close decision. He was afterall the champion fighting infront of his fans so no major surprises or scandal.
The judges had Ottke winning the first half, and Reid winning the second half of the fight????? It's hard to believe but Ottke was actually even worse in the second half!!!!! In the remaining five rounds Ottke just hugs Reid constantly. The ref (Ottke's uncle) does nothing, unsurprisingly. Only in Germany could a fighter batter the hometown favourite for the whole round, knock him down, and still lose the round.
So YOU scored it two rounds for Reid, fair enough-at the best you're a neutral observer (not a Reid fan), my point is Ottke had home support and so a two point sway to the local guy shouldn't be such a shock. (I still scored it 115-115, and I'm neutral) We see home-twon decisions all the time, and in some cases much worse (Try de la Hoya-Sturm, or Foreman-Schulz) for size. Ottke, IMO was a very tricky, crafty fighter who should be given a lot more credit...so what if he was a bit boring
This guy was never a world chapmion. When He got WBA and IBF titles he won them on bad split decisions. And he never fought outside of Germany..pathetic... would have like to see him mix it with Jackson, McClellan or Benn either of which would have knocked him out cold and there would be no dispute
The biggest fix in boxing history. Was the ref related to Ottke 😂 what a joke. How the governing body never stripped Ottke after this farce I don't know 👎 it's no wonder he was undefeated being protected like this. I think if he'd have stayed down after the knockdown the ref would've helped him up 😂
If you think this fight was bad watch Ottke v Larsden, the most disgraceful fixed fight in modern boxing. Larsden won the fight by 6 clear round. Byron Mitchell was also robbed v Ottke as bad as Reid in 2003.
absolute disgrace,an embaressment to boxing that ref should have had his licence revoked after this. appalling, reid was never the same after this. join my robin reid fan club on facebook, just search "robin reid comeback group"
wahahahahaha that article woulda been on Sven Ottkes website wahahahahahaha The guy is a joke.....true boxing fans and scribes dont rate this guy anywhere!
Falcoa thats just plain bs and you know it. If your getting warned for hitting your opponent then your whole gameplan is out the window! Even though the 2nd half was closer due to the above reasons its still the worst rip off in boxing history! Along with Roy Jones at the Olympics.
