Millions of times thanks for this precious video^_^. I have this one for CD, never imagined I can see him playing this one. Richter is my one top pianist!!!
Finally the whole performance! Don't know how to express the gratitude. Compared to the recording with Kleiber this live performance was less polished, but with much adventurousness and fearlessness. Magnificent!
at least the real wonderful sound of Richter on a wonderful Steinway with a wonderful sound technician and cameraman .The Orchester and conductor are so great .Thanks for this unique moment of music
Only the marvelous Master Richter has power over me...There are moments like this, rare and powerful, in which an artist long vanished, seems to stand in your presence and speak to you directly, as if he bore a message meant for you above all others. This is truly a unique phenomenon, a gem. Thank you for sharing..
The sound fidelity may not please some listeners, but this is a fine performance. The preservation of recordings by greats such as Richter are valuable additions to our music cultural archive.
Great and beloved a composer as Dvorak is, with such diversity, depth of feeling, moving melody and virtuosity, his very fine piano concerto is perhaps not generally thought quite on a par- for all its musical flair, glorious flourishes and passionate appeals- with the concerto elite, yet Richter, be damned he shall, takes it so close there. In a sense you may say he takes it beyond the rest, into a realm of its own.
Richter is my favorite pianist of all time. I fondly remember listen in to his records, as a child along with my little brother at the library with a headset. For my part, my favorite recordings include Richter's performances of Schubert's "Der Wanderer" Fantasia, as well as, his debut in the West at Carnegie Hall, when he played the Prokofiev Seventh Piano Sonata and the Rachmaninoff G-mail Prelude as an encore. I was later present when Richter recorded the Bramhs' Second Piano Concerto. Richter and his amazing performances have been a lifelong inspiration to me, definitely informing my own performance on the piano. I've just thankfully discovered the plethora of Richter's recordings here on RU-vid, which have greatly enhanced my existence recently! I'm entirely grateful for all of your posts, to be sure!
The greatest pianists of All Time Are really Artur Rubinstein ( The God) Grigory Sokolov ( The Titan The Giant of The piano) Emil Gilels ( The King) Wilhelm Kempff ( The most beautiful piano Ever) Radu Lupu ( Brahms piano concerto no 1 with The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra video RU-vid! Lupu a class of his own playing Brahms piano concerto no 1) Stanislav Igolinsky ( better than Lipatti) Alexei Lubimov ( The Genius) Solomon Cutner ( The structure of music) Maria Grinberg ( Mozart piano concerto no 24!) Mikhail Pletnev ( The most Powerful Prokoviev piano concerto no 1) Maurizio Pollini Vladimir Ashkenazy ( The most colorful volcanic piano sound Ever) Natalia Trull Rosa Tamarkina Ekaterina Novitskaya Dimitri Bashkirov Andrei Gavrilov Victor Eresko ( better than Busoni) Lubov Timofeeva
I wouldn't have believed it, but it seems a better performance than the one with Kleiber, 10 years later. However, I'm not a professional... Thank you for this precious video!
@belshep Thank you - yes, I think so too, as I remember it was summer-y. Immediately after my post I found a very detailed website devoted to Richter, trovar.com, and I wanted to add this to my posting, but YT would not let me post in quick succession. The concert is listed there. He spent a lot of time moving his piano stool before beginning, as I recall. Then - magic happened. The website ruly punishing schedule with often daily concerts, and many in what could now be called backwater towns.
@oldoperafan What you are talking about could be 2nd June 1975 at Prague Rudolfinum. He played Beethoven Sonata 3 and 3 Bagatelles from op.126 in the first part and the "Hammerklavier" in the second, plus Wagner "Schmachtend" as an encore
As much as I admire and respect the great Richter, one can only marvel at the number of outstanding performances and recordings of other pianists of today's era - seemingly Richter and Gilels reigned supreme in their era, but now they have much opposition...however I am not underestimating the greatness of those early recordings that linger in our minds eg who can forget the Ponti series of romantic concertos stemming from the Vox/Candide years; against the lengthy Hypernion series of today.
+s1earle I agree btu........Richter and Gilels and much more big players havent the technical oportunities in their moment, now are outstanding in comparation with thats they have 50 yerar ago..... Unfortunately............
Richter himself was reportedly unhappy with the studio recording of this concerto he did with Carlos Kleiber -- this live performance is a finer one of this often under-valued concerto, and Richter at his best.
