There are the greats, the myths, the legends, and Richter still somehow stands alone above all of them. Greatest of all time by a very large margin.

Absolutely, I agree with you. Personally, from experience, the 4th etude is extremely hard, and gets exponentially harder in certain passages as you increase the speed linearly. Most smug internationally acclaimed "pianists" who shouldn't be labelled as such as they are technically deficient couldn't play it properly at presto, so what do they do? They pass mistakes as style and search for simpler pieces to play, and the hard ones are just ear rape in terms of unnecessary drama.

Rather wonderful, if strange, and certainly unpredictable in how he proceeds, but when the passion, exhilaration, comes, with such clout, oh boy, how well he does it, a surge, a river breaking its banks, unconstrained, immense relief, release, the victory of coming home, one only he can define and display, if only in fantasy.

@Mozart99900 A great pianist with an astonishing technical mastery with bold, wide-ranging musical imagination, he had insight, an artistic expression that displayed an assertive, direct, richly satisfying style, going right to the heart of the music; he expressed himself with an eye single to the truth of the music he gives life to. Always he was introspective, intimate and aloof, challenging lively thought on our part while remaining, himself, a charmingly mystery.

Revolution is about raw power that destroys any order, rules, details, or nuances. Revolution is irrational. As for Fialkowska I agree that her interpretation is rich of details. I like Richter's brilliance and exuberance yet he still manages a cantabile melody with great sensitivity. I appreciate that he doesn't stoop to the very lame rubato ploy of constantly playing the L.H before the R.H. on 1st beats. That drives me spare! (I call it "old man's disease" ) I love Chopin's 4th Ballade best of all and found Richter's interpretation very sympathetic except just for one short passage at about 30 - 32 mins into this video, a tad brash there for a few moments. I've been trying to solve a riddle of Richter and find an answer on the question why everything in Richter's performance sounds such beautiful. I think the main secret of Richter is he never follow what are written in the notes literally but he follow only his own fillings. As a result he creates his own picture of tempo which expands an original version significantly. The same he does with sound by extremely enlarging its dynamic range. And the result is stunning. It's because Richter is a greatest genius.

The secret of Richter stays in his music education. Please remember that until 18 years he didn't formally study piano . His music education was his father, opera and Wagner. That's why in his performance especially in Chopin you hear the music not the piano.

Richter brings his own highly unique vision and intensity to these iconic masterpieces, incidentally I find his reading of No.4 magnificent . I'll look out for the Ballade in G minor - and listen!.

I suggest the live1957 version in London at the Royal Festival Hall: it is hard to understand that such pianism is possible.
@paulmayerpiano
@paulmayerpiano 8 лет назад
+Meredith Foster Michelangeli's technique IS his interpretation. They go hand in hand. You can FEEL what he's doing at the piano just by listening, and that's where his magic lies, IMO. I can feel my body involuntarily relax, my breathing deepen, and my mind get clear when I listen to him. That certainly fits in with my definition of "art". Certain pianists have a touch that conveys a sublime beauty - Gulda, Arrau, Zimmerman, to name a few. Anything done with enough care and attention - even scales - can evoke emotion in the listener. Music doesn't just exist in your ears, it involves your entire body and mind.

The only thing that matters to me is, there's a beautiful, extraordinary human being in Richter.His performance is unequaled in richness depth and sensitivity- it is as if he caught the very souls and spirits of each note, the very essence of life, explosive and alternately soulful.

there are so many people telling lies about Richter. And just because of jealousy and politics. People said also he was mad and went to clinics. He had problems with the governement, the secret service, yes. because he was so important. His german origin, his separation of his mother and other things were not easy to handle and international carèer was difficult. But what does this matter, he did play georgeous. and this here cannot be better done, only different. it can be done....

I can't believe that even HERE, listening to Richter play Chopin, I have to dodge the homophobia. Un-f**king-believable. Would you also say that, "even though he was unfortunately a Jew, Schubert was an excellent composer," or "I don't care if Jessye Norman is black or not, I still like her voice"?!?!?!?!?! Some of you need to grow up and step into the 21st Century; we're 12 years into it now.

I made a very negative comment about Richter's playing from some years later, remarking that Richter had played much better elsewhere. Here's an example of phenomenal playing.

Exceptional playing; what a shame about the imbecilically placed adverts showing complete disregard for the musical content. My BP was drifting rapidly downwards - until the first interruption, right in the middle of the coda of the first ballade.

this great treasure will put the evil nonsense that Chopin was not SR's cup of tea! Appassionato where called for, tender, and always with taste and proportion. The tonal palette most beautiful, sincere 'recreation' with mannerism absent. His sojourn in the West not helpful to this great genius! I heard 4 of his first solo evenings In carnegie Hall.These post war performances most enlightening!

it is sad i actually pore over these comments thinking there is some wit here or there but it seems people above the 7th grade do not comment. children complain about the finest musicians who studied with the best minds and then the ridiculous gossip. i still think the world is changing but idiocy will always remain .

beer patzer had a sharp observation - Chopin played like Rachmaninov. But why not? Maybe also try some Chopin as Prokofiev. It's art. Why not be bold and a little experimental - within bounds. So what if it's not entirely convincing.

@Mozart99900 I am continually stunned and appalled at the ignorance displayed by otherwise smart, culturally engaged individuals on this point. Individual tastes one can argue against, much more than it is the actual lack of knowledge. Since this is the internet and 21st century, my sense is that knowledge is more accessible to the ones not lazy enough to raise his consciousness.Your statement is clearly linked out of hatred and a need to stigmatize.

Sorry about may be quick conclusion, I did not read all you posts, for which I don't really have an opportunity nor wish. What is clear though, is that you think you are very bright and modern. Therefore I have a quote for you from Leo Tolstoy: "A man is like a fraction whose numerator is what he is and whose denominator is what he thinks of himself". For me this conversation has ended. Feel free to kick the air though.

Imagination is the only thing i miss with him .Pianists now show things that the composer never meant but that is ok.Fasil Say,Andrewsweski ,Langinterest more,Richter's time was when pianists wee not as aware of the various traditions as now.There are things ive heard him do that veterans would say are jejeune but here is great piano playing. The second ballade here is very special seems richter played no 4 all his l ife.

And why do you think it is OK to go with our dirty opinions into someone's private life if he did not ever publicly share it? How can we make these conclusions about something so intimate for the person? For the person who, on the other hand, did expose so much else to the people, of what most of us are even unworthy to judge. What you are doing is a profanation. If you think you are so modern, I would like to temper your opinion. Through the centuries many people like you have desecrated genius
