Man I freaking love these vids. Overall not a bad speaker and now I know why a lot of people like this one...that slightly boosted midrange and up while staying together at high volumes. Decent looking too. Not for me but I do like the SVS sub I own, their PEQ really works well and has made an audible difference in my room. A few changes to this older model speaker and I think SVS could have a true winner on their hands if they manage to stay at this price point. Great vid, truly enjoyed it.

Thank you for this review. I decided to get the Ultras and have found them my 'go to speaker'. The Ultras are the best I have ever heard or owned. I was glad to hear your precise and in-depth review of the Primes. Thank you as always for your time and effort.

Thanks in particular for talking a little bit about your robotic measuring machine. As always, your description about the speaker’s sound is well thought out and presented without hyperbole and then circling the measured data and predicted room response back to the listening description is just very cool.

I hope SVS (and others) send you more gear to test, free of bias. Would very much like to see what the Ultra range has over the Prime range. If it resolves that directivity problem here and with the centre speaker, it could be well worth the extra money.

Been anticipating this review! Thanks for your hard work. Edit: I've had this speaker for over 6 months now and am in love with it. After watching the entire review, I can say that what you've said about it and what the data shows is fair, or that is to say, lines up with my experience. Nice work Erin! Any suggestions on a good speaker in this price range?

I have the Ultras for more than 3 years, great looks, and sounded quite well to my ears but when I became more immerse in the audiophile world , i noticed the ASR review, although they measured quite well it was pointed out there was something going on with the high frequencies, I initially thought, BS as they sound very good to me, eventually i bought the cheaper Revel M16s, and put a set up with the Ultras a A speakers and the M16 as B speakers, and I have been AB testing for more than 6 months, eventually I noticed I was favoring the M16s, they sounded more natural to me. Recently i decided to do a more methodic AB testing with the tracks Harman used for the research on speakers tonality, and oh boy, the difference was even more evident, there is a song "hangin' on the good times by Little Feat" where the weirdness of the ultras highs stood out. they were just wrong while the revels were delightful. I demoted my ultras as surround speakers until I fully switch to revel speakers.
@ChihuAudioMan
@ChihuAudioMan Год назад
@@Lauren080508 Do you use the Revels for movies or just music? I do own the Ultra center, and have considered the bookshelves as well, just haven't heard them. Comparing the Ultra to the older MCS-01 which is a beast, the MCS seems a bit more natural and effortless, but the Ultra center is very good, and seems better off axis as it's a 3-way. It does seem SVS has voiced their speakers a bit for vocal clarity which I am fine with personally, but would be nice if they didn't overdo it with the Ultra speakers. It's always nice to see the data to confirm!
@Lauren080508
@Lauren080508 Год назад
@@ChihuAudioMan I have the ultra center too, lol, when playing stereo the center is off but when playing dolby atmos music the center comes alive, and I can clearly tell the ultra center is brighter than my revels, there is a consensus in the ASR community the SVS speakers are unnaturally bright, but they can play loud, but there is no strict rules pal, only doing AB testing you can tell which speaker you like better.

Awesome review. When it comes to speakers there is always have to compromise, I think. What I want is 3 speakers left, right, and center for music and home theater. They have to be linear, loud, and a wide off-axis response. Aka a unicorn.

the frustrating part with the Prime line is that the bookshelves and the towers do ok, especially with some EQ, but the matching center is just not great at all. I'd love to see a test of the SVS ultra center to see if it can keep up with its counterparts?

Hmm, interesting review. I do plan to use these and the centre at the front of my 7.1.4 setup with the Prime Satellites for surround. Is there a better speaker in this price bracket I should be considering? I do like a brighter speaker but not at the expense of voices sounding unnatural. The surrounds will be wall mounted but will have a decent sub to handle the base.

Great work, thanks. Another YTer did a binaural recording of these vs some other speakers and I thought they sounded incredible and stole the show. But I suspect that the mid/treble boost was making them shine in a way that wouldn't quite come through the same in person. I want to like the idea of binaural recordings and comparisons on YT, and I think they can reveal some useful differences between speakers, but you can't completely trust them either.

Feels like so many speakers "intended" for HT use are bright. Sure, EQ will help, but the common wisdom also seems to be to not EQ above Schroeder. Kind of like how many "rock" speakers are bright and make a lot of rock recordings unlistenable.

Erin, a side question. What are your thoughts on 3rd harmonic distortions at 1.5% - 3% at around the 1khz - 3khz region at 86db and 96db? Are such 3rd harmonic distortions really audible at 3% around the most sensitive part of our hearing?

Thanks Erin, a VERY easy and thorough review to follow. Kudos on disclosure v-a-v SVS cabling option to obtain speakers w/o having to buy. SVS seems to employ good business ethics for fair reviewing. They definitely treat their customers well with 45day audits and 1 yr trade ups. I like them. Back to the review, your visuals definitely illustrate your hypothesis(sise) and "science don't lie" right? Good job, good research. I have Prime Elevations x 4 for ATMOS layer... was always curious of the larger models & lines for their character for bed layer, especially when it'll come to music. Great video as always. Erin can I make a small request and that is can you use a different colour text for the frequency on the graphs (top-down dispersion view) so the contrast pops better on those 66 and up dark blue zones as black is hard to see. Maybe bold white or if too faint on the yellows a dark to mid tone grey?

Ultra bookshelves next. I have Prime Pinnacles and dual SB 2000 pros in a "2" channel setup. The rest vintage. Pioneer SA 9800, Pl 550, Nagaoka MP 110 and when flac or 320k, a schitt modi 3+. You and Audioholics (Dr. Floyd Toole) are why I went with dual subs and knew to place them 25% off the back and side walls (I have no better choice). These explanations are much easier to take in than they have been before. Have you done the minidsp eq for pinnacles?

These are now $300. I've been going back and forth on buying these, or the Wharfedale Diamond 12.2s. They used to be the same price... Now that the Primes are 40% cheaper, I'd be hard pressed to buy the Wharfedales over them. Would love to hear your thoughts on the Wharfedales. Don't think you've reviewed them. I'm guessing you'd prefer them over the Primes as they are a more neutral speaker, but now price difference plays a part in deciding which is a better buy.

Hello Everyone! I apologize in advance for this longer comment, I hope someone with more experience and knowledge can help out as the internet articles were rather confusing that down right helpful. That said, I am new to this sphere of (sound) technology and am looking for a suiting Amplifier for future SVS Prime Bookshelf Speakers and SVS SB-1000 combination. So far I've owned few mini stereos and Home Theatres 5.1, and after thorough "research", solely based on RU-vid Reviews and Comparisons, I came do decision that the previously mentioned Components are my go-to choice, from price stand point and what they deliver. What Reviews do not touch up on are suiting Amplifiers, and that's my current struggle. I don't know what to look for in a Amplifier and if it's a good fit for wished speakers and sub. My Amplifier (not Receiver) budget would be €450/$490. Hope someone here can help out with a useful comment. Thank You in advance!

I figured you would use them with your sock speaker cables and then burn in and test the one SVS speaker cables they sent you. And describe the audible and measured differences. Soundstage characteristics is what you might consider including in your reviews instead of only response / tonal measurements. Changes in sound staging is what stereo playback is all about. Otherwise, one can just use a single speaker with great tonality and call it done. It’s my wish that all stereo reviewers would incorporate more sound stage characteristics in their descriptions of stereo gear. Thank you for your consideration 😊
@-MarkWinston-
@-MarkWinston- Год назад
Soundstage charactersitics can and will change from room to room and in the data directivity and dispersion charateristics of a speaker can indicates how 'big' a soundstage of a speaker would be relative to other speakers in the same exact room. After all the data is laid out, you will still need to hear it for yourself, in your room, with your equipments to see if it fulfils your requirements and personal preference.
