Hi everyone we just want to say a huge HELLO and thank you to everyone that is taking the time to watch and participate. HUGE THANK YOU to all our new subscribers see you next week;)
There’s a number of advantages to the center cockpit configuration….more interior room (aft cabin), less motion (the center of a teeter totter doesn’t move as much as the ends do), and Sonny Crockett lived on an Endeavour 42 center cockpit on Miami Vice….that makes center cockpit boats cool.
Yup Agree 100%, thTs why I recently bought a 1990 Endeavor 42 center cockpit! Just like Sonny Crocket's except mine has the stern sugar scoop! Absolutely Love it!!
Solar Power has become increasingly important which brings in the issue of Shading of Panels with Centre Cockpit designs. A rear Cokpit Solar Arch is pretty much unbeatable if you want to avoid shading and having to waste large amounts of money on generally useless short lifespan flexible Panels (the Chinese ones generally useless inside two years. Plus as Cruisers apparently spend 75% of their time at anchor, that Rear Cockpit becomes the Main Living Area on the Boat, which makes a Transom type mini galley start earning its keep too. with a good Sprayhood, and full Cockpit Bimini protection plus modern walk around side decks it opens up the top of the boat quite Nicely ? There is another issue for Centre Cickpits for disabled people like myself. First, getting in and out of them is not good, plus the Companionway below is normally a lot of very steep steps. If only Centre Cockpit boats were available, people as disabled as myself, would have to give up Sailing. But instead, there are a selection of nice aft Cockpit boats with as few as 4 gentle sloping steps withbp the Companionway. So obviously a very Sybjective, and rather forced perspective, but if as able bodied as I'm Once Was, I think I'd still be going with the aft Cockpit, and not just for that Huge Solar Arch Avantage ? 🤔
Our centre cockpit is a bit cramped for outdoor dining, but we still do it and enjoy it. I have thought that our central engine does feel like a waste of space, but it is very easily accessible. And boy do you have to access them alot. Overall I wouldnt take cockpit location into account on my boat choice if everything else suited
Thank you for your thought's on this, we like the idea of a centre cockpit for safety for our little one and for us but being a little claustrophobic we will have to see. We are going to try and get out on as many different boats as we can to see what fits us best and budget as well. It would seem that a cc 45ft or bigger has loads of space is this true?
When deciding what boat an equally important consideration for us is to have an interior design with a queen-ish size bed in the aft location avoiding anchor chain noise :>) _ nice vid, thnx
You must consider what you will be using the yacht for and where? Short hops in the Med during summer where you will spend most of your time outside relaxed. Serious ocean passges in foul weather where you want maximum shelter and plenty to brace against. The choice is yours but choose wisely changing vessels is an expensive exercise. Me? if I could afford one I would have a big Hallberg Rassey or Amel with a centre cockpit and luxurious aft cabin. Currently I sail a small Contessa which has an aft cockpit and no aft cabin to worry about. Where did I put that lottery ticket? Bon Voyage all!
I have a nice morgan 1974 ,38 oi cc 2 heads 2state rooms giving complete privacy, I'm currently remodeling to suit my taste ..im converting it to an electric drive . Solar and wind and water generator systems with water maker, electric stove ,With a house batt, bank , separate from the electric motor bank . The engine room gives plenty of room to install this set up along side fresh water tanks . And centralize the wiring and plumbing, While balancing the weight, instead of having tanks and controls under beds or floors in closets . Everything's in one spot .. with plenty of room for a couple of guests, with a folding swim/dive deck covered helm , if someone want to sun tan they have the whole forward deck , swim deck on the stern . And shade in the healm . It's just me and my girl ,so plenty of room . As we live aboard year round. She's old and slow like me but built like a tank .. removing a lot of weight lowered my water line and I picked up a couple knots.. The center cockpit gives great 360, views while operating the boat . And much safer in storms, I chose this boat for these exact reasons, Every boat has its pros and cons , these are some of my pros,
Hi Jacob it is either one or the other but there are some sailboats that have a pilothouse, or custom made sailboats (normally done by the boat owner that have a mix of the two). If you have a very large budget you could buy an oyster 565 that gives you the best of both worlds;) hope this helps.
