Swahili Food Near Me Street Food Safari Africa Tanzania
Cassava is a woody root vegetable shaped like a sweet potatoe. But looks more like a piece of wood. They are toxic if eaten raw so must be cooked correctly. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. So this is what they have usually for breakfast, the locals. So its one of the most drought tolerent crops in the world. Apparently its got a lot of starch in it. But you do need the salt and the sauce and salad And you eat with your hands here. Salad is spicy. Its like a relish with chili, cucumber Cabbage Good breakfast. Its very filling Ive just had one, and I'm full. And look at the view, amazing. So the breakfast is good (laughs) You cant beat that. its good ha
Maandazi is a bit like a doughnut actualy its nice. But not as sweet as a donut.
Cassava fried Crisps . So these are basically home made crisps Made from cassava, deep fried. They are nice because they are fresh. Taste a lot better than the ones you buy in the shop You know the crisps in the packet And you have them with salt or pili pili chili. So looks like Im goin to my second location wherever I can find any more swahili food.
Ugali is a maize flour porrage. Common in africa. The flour is usually cooked in water or occationly milk. Its a bit hot though. You roll it into a ball It can be a delicious, cheap alternative to mash patatoes.
Zanzibar Mix is very bright yellow. I never had this before. Its good. So they pu a lot in there. Mishkaki, cassava, eggs, some herbs. chilli, onion and some I think some red beans in there. crispy bits of either patatoes or cassava. Theres at least two eggs in here. Boiled eggs. I think its a varied version where every you get it from. Lime in it. Its a bit tangy as well. And its quite thick as well its not like thin. This is one of the famous streets foods of Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar. Its probably the best street food I've had in Tanzania since I've been here.
BBQ is the standard street food in Dar Es Salaam BBQ everywhere, chicken, beef, fish. Food in the video includes Chips Mayai, Mishkaki and Changui fish. Chips Mayai is kind of s staple in Tanzania - its simply chips with egg!

You're very brave to try some of what you did lol.. my parents are TZ and I lived there for 11 years, I couldn't have some of that stuff. Never liked ugali. Or zege (chips mayai). But so glad you tried mishkaki (sururu) and Zbar mix. If you get a chance try the Changu again but masala, lots more flavour. And sekela chicken all day. Mamboz is legendary. Karibu!

@@ArchitectRussell with chips mayai the key is to cut fresh potatoes and fry them, dont use frozen ones. Makes sure they are not too crispy as you will place them on a frying pan, beat 2eggs in a bowl then place on top, flip after 5mins or less (i use a plate to flip because im not skilled like those that do it back home). For pilau nyama or ndizi nyama, best places are hotels/restaurants. Street food is best fried....thank you for the videos i am enjoying them. Somehow it feels like im back home 😂😂 God bless you🙏🙏

Nice video but some comments by you were so typically dismissive! Ugali is Ugali - not bloody mashed potato... just like pasta is not noodles. And the mix you had was messed up, original version never had meat or eggs. As for eggs mayai ... it’s an institution, so taking the mick is like telling Italians that your espresso is just coffee. The coal drum was a tandoor & you made no mention of the cultural origins of the food, Indian, Arabic etc. And mishkaki has no vinegar. So in all, you irritated the hell out of me. @meganabril girl u are really reaching! YES we do refer to our food as Swahili food! There is not a single Tanzanian person in the comment section who was making a fuss about him using the term “Swahili” to describe our food! Everyone was unbothered! we all jus enjoyed the video but here comes Megan “the know it all” trying to put her 2 cents in! Ur opinion is bullshit. I am Tanzanian, and we don’t just refer to Swahili as a “language” my dear... as u would put it! For ur information Swahili is a term that can be used for food (Swahili food, Swahili culture, Swahili music, Swahili movies etc) it’s not jus our language! It’s the PEOPLE -and we reside all over East Africa not jus Tanzania alone. Sisi ni wa Swahili wa Tanzania, (we are the Swahili ppl of Tanzania 🇹🇿) Bt the Swahili culture is spread out through the region of East Africa. Most of the food he was reviewing isn’t jus foods you eat in Tanzania, they eat the same food in Kenya 🇰🇪 and other surrounding countries. So yes, he was absolutely right by calling it “Swahili street food” he jus so happened to be Tanzania! Bt he was still eating “swahili street food” If he went to Kenya, he can call that it “Swahili street food” as well and nobody would say anything! bcuz that’s exactly what it is! Most of us in East africa eat the same foods such as ugali, pilau, mishkaki, vitumbua, maandazi, sambusa, chipsi, urojo (mix), ubuyu. Etc the list is endless!
