Swamp Thing is one of the most consistent characters in comics. Almost very Swamp Thing comic from the 70s to the 00s ranged from above average to great.

That story with Swampie, Batman, Etrigan, Constantine, & Phantom Stranger trekking through the spirit plane has stuck with me for decades; that was a team up for the ages 🤓

Alan Moore was producing Miracle/Marvelman, V for Vendetta and Swamp Thing at the same time. Incredible

Great job. The Moore run made me fall in love with comics. The writers after him were hit and miss, but I always liked the Swamp Thing character.

Because god forbid we let the characters grow as people and gain a family despite the fact that the fans always love the hell out of it and it has NEVER done well to split them up in any segment of fandom, anywhere

Swamp Thing and Etrigan pallin' around in Hell is just some top tier comics and good good stuff. The Return of Swamp Thing is such a rad movie. Great video!

I read the trade paperbacks almost 20 years ago, and while I enjoyed it from the opening page, the part you mentioned is where it really started to click for me. That's where it started to ascend to greatness, in my mind.

I thoroughly enjoyed this overview of the history of Swamp Thing, and I was wondering if you would consider doing something similar with the Doom Patrol. Everyone talks about the Silver Age team and the Morrison run by they have been rebooted and reconceptulized about a dozen other times. My favorite being the Bronze Age Paul Kupperberg era. The Doom Patrol and Swamp Thing have very similar publishing trajectories. Thanks.

The Silver Age Doom Patrol is definitely on the table. Actually, I thought I had one up already. I may be mistaken. I know I did look at a bunch of the individual issues at one point. I may need to revive that series.

Very nice video. Found out a lot about the different writers on Swamp Thing. Alan Moore and Nancy Collins my favs. Shocked that DC wanted to kill off Abby and Tef'e.

I first heard of Swamp Thing from TV Series on USA Network in the 90s. I've only read a few of the comic, but this really has me interested in reading more.

Love this overview. I'm just finishing up Millar's run right now (mainly because I've been trying to read all of Morrison's work and this one gets lumped in). Overall I didn't hate it, but it certainly has some problems- just not the normal edgey probs I normally have with Millar's stuff. I really appreciate the full retrospective on the character. Always wondered what I missed between Moore/Veitch's stuff and everything else between the most noteable runs

Loved the 5 parts of Swamp Thing Retrospective, you nailed it. I proceed to your channel when I want the nitty gritty on a comic subject. Any wise words where to start on X-men late 90s or 2000s?
@StrangeBrainParts
@StrangeBrainParts Год назад
Thank you! Sadly, the X-Men is not my forte. The last time I read it was the Hickman run. And before that? The Grant Morrison run...which I might suggest since it's early 2000's.

I thoroughly enjoyed NANCY COLLINS' tenure on Swamp Thing! Like with Moore's some years prior, I bought a random Collins' issue; loved it and started buying it regularly, including back issues! Her eventual departure was devastating for me and for Swamp Thing! I was puzzled and mistakenly believed she was bored with writing comics.... I should have known editorial had something to do with it! Swamp Thing was "unrelatable to the mere mortals reading the series...." ? Yet, SANDMAN and WATCHMEN were, somehow? I could have sworn Swamp Thing was more about horror, magical realism and suspense than some juvenile power fantasy! Mainstream editors just don't like change, innovation or super character families, apparently!

We need to bring swamp thing into the DC movies
@christopherulichney

I think I may have forgotten that the Swamp Thing movie was the reason for this series return. It seems to me, after seeing the whole history in one video, that once Moore left every writer that followed him was trying to replicate his formula. They all tried to totally revamp the character and subvert the status quo. And now Stamp Thing just gets new series after new series trading on the nostalgia factor of stories written almost 40 years ago. Honestly has anyone contributed any major development to the Swamp Thing mythos since Alan Moore?
@StrangeBrainParts
@StrangeBrainParts Год назад
I’ve not gotten through the Snyder run yet, so I’m unsure if anything significant has been added. The addition of Tefe is the only addition that comes to mind. Otherwise, it seems like reinterpretation defines the writers following Moore. Generally speaking.

Your channel is fantastic and deserves a much higher sub following. A few suggestions? The video thumb nail style could be redesigned: the banner "Overlord Comics" running down the right side is oddly placed. We read left to right, after all. Also, the panel often feels over-full. It's an undefinable, "je ne sais quoi" effect, but I sometimes AUTOMATICALLY pass it by before remembering "hey, I like that." It's the opposite of click bait. Honestly, I'm no page designer, but I know how I react to things I see, and I'd like for a channel I appreciate as presenting superior content be as successful as it deserves.
@StrangeBrainParts
@StrangeBrainParts Год назад
First of all, thank you! Secondly, I've just begun phasing out the text on the side and trying to declutter as much as possible while not being, you know, clickbait-y. Thus the reason a LOT of the current thumbnails have been a single figure. It's a work in progress, but I appreciate the feedback and I DO take it as intended: That you just want to see this channel thrive more than it has been.

I'm so sad to see that those later Vol. 2 Swamp Thing comics are by Mark Millar. The covers are stunningly gorgeous, but I know they'll be wretched on the inside.

I would have written Swamp Thing as a series of small stories that have a clear beginning and end, similar to a Twilight Zone. There would be a temptation to link them together with an overall arc, but I would probably spend WAY TOO MUCH time constructing that.
