Faced by the prolonged hot weather, and subsequent extremely dry conditions, the Swanage Railway still managed to front two steam locomotives to deliver the first day of their Summer timetable. This consists of a two train service operating through the Isle of Purbeck between Swanage and Norden. Duties would be shared between 34028 "Eddystone" and U Class - 31806, the latter of which has recently received attention to its valve gear to fix some ailments associated with normal wear and tear. The U Class could be seen sporting a 'Swanage Railway 50th Anniversary' headboard throughout the day, marking both 50 years since the Swanage branch was closed by British Railways, and 50 years since the foundation of the Swanage Railway Society.
Celebrating the 60th anniversary since the withdrawal of the titled service, 'The Royal Wessex' would be resurrected as a suppliment on one of the service trains. The service was implemented in 1951 in conjuction with the 'Festival of Britain', providing a semi-fast service between the capital and popular seaside towns on the South West Mainline; Bournemouth, Weymouth and Swanage. The service has its origins 40 years earlier in 1911, as an untitled express between London Waterloo and Bournemouth; later becoming the 'Bournemouth Limited'. The service was dropped at the onset of World War II. After its reintroduction and being retitled, the service lasted up until 1962. Swanage's celebration of the titled train saw passengers travel in freshly overhauled Maunsell SO carriage - S1381, adorned with 'Royal Wessex' name boards. Starting the day behind 34028, the Bulleid was suitably fitted with 'The Royal Wessex' headboard, with 31806 taking over the service in the afternoon minus this added touch.
After the service trains were done for the day, the Swanage Railways' flagship dining service, 'The Wessex Belle', would venture through the Isle of Purbeck as the sun began to set, hauled by 34028 "Eddystone".
Locomotives:
Ex-SR U Class - 31806
Ex-SR Rebuilt 'West Country' Class - 34028 "Eddystone"
All footage filmed on Saturday the 23rd of July 2022.

Bit of a risky move having clocked that piece of burnt trackside, they could save some of that expensive black gold for later🤔?? A good old Southern summer scene, well groomed stations, top spec locos - stop hiding in that shed T9!!!! Also there's a top cameraman lineside shooting excelent memory jogging scenes, cheers Matt👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

As I understand it (though please don't quote me), the U is being used on services for the sake of mileage accumulation. Having had some work done on the valve gear, Swanage are aiming for it to be fettled and running fit, should its scheduled use on the DCE go ahead. It really doesn't get much better, does it? It's good to see the T9 undercover at least. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Excellent filming 👍 Good to see the SR rotating their magnificent locos, 34072 “257 Squadron” was also in service on Wed 25, sharing the timetable with “Eddystone”

Defiantly will be a challenging year for the railway, higher fares again on top of a 20% decline in passengers year to date.

And a lack of coal. Although GWSR managed 8 in steam a few weeks ago

Things like 'The Royal Wessex' recreation are something of an answer to this. I think it's clear the railway are trying to broaden the travel experience, rather than settling for it just being a 'train ride', to make it more attractive as a day out rather than just the odd trip. Services with the Pullman Observation Coach did well to fill that gap. Fingers crossed it works well for them.

While is always lovely to see steam engines in action, I do have to seriously question the decision to run locomotives that have the potential to cause wildfires that destroy wildlife, property and homes all in the name of "leisure". North Norfolk Railway have made the decision to stop steam services until at least the 29th July 2022, running with heritage diesels instead. Of course it's disappointing for steam enthusiasts, but this is a very sensible move given the extreme fire risk right now.

Bs. It’s steam or nothing. Doesn’t harm the environment
