Hello, thank you for listening to our music. I hope it gives you some joy and pleasure.
I am pleased that you have discovered our music through this medium. I view this experience as the equivalent of previewing a record in a record store in days of old. However, if you wish to experience the music in its' fullest form, I would strongly encourage you to acquire it in a physical format you can bring into your home. Not only will you then be able to experience the richest version of the music sonically, but you will also be afforded the opportunity to enjoy the tangible artwork, which was conceived in tandem with the music, and serves as a further portal to experiencing the total conceptual and spiritual and emotional content of the work we have labored, lovingly, to bring to you.
I love you,
- Michael Gira / Swans / Young God Records

This is the meanest song I've ever heard. And yes, "mean" is the best word for it. I feel like I'm being taunted, teased, pushed around like a helpless puppet. It's like a playground bully except he's the size of the universe.

Yep and ironically this is the song that taught me patience. In my bed, in the dark of my room, I allowed it to lure me in. The transition in the middle of the song with the breathing alone scared the poop out of me the first time I heard it.

One definitely needs an attention span. Luckily it is so interesting. Like a great movie, parts of it are difficult to sit through. Like real life, it is often disturbing and uncomfortable. It is not all pretty and uniform, it is a landscape of contrasts of harmony and discordance, profundity and silliness, beauty and ugliness, light-heartedness and darkness. Not always an easy listen by any measure, but good art challenges you in such ways. I think Gira is an artistic genius personally. If you aren't disturbed or even are at least slightly sometimes repulsed at first, by some aspects of someone's music, it's probably not that great. Great art is a challenge both to the creator and to the subject of it.That is how profound their music is, it has so many dimensions it is almost impossible to take all the nuance in at first glance.

swans actually taught me more than that, they taught me to appreciate the little details. Like the first time I listened to swans I was like "it's the same shit over and over". Listening to swans now, you realize there's very little repetition going on. There's always something to hone in on and realize it's doing something completely unique. Like the drums in this song for example.

@@ddavis_drums I'm listening to this for the first time, and to me the repetition holds a certain horror. Its like you're listening to something beyond human comprehension, and in that I find a certain sinister beauty. And sure, you may not like long songs as such. But in my opinion a song like this couldn't exist if it were short because all the feelings they are attempting to convey would seem odd if spliced into 3 minutes. And that, is true art to me.

To me, this song is about sex and creation, but from a dark, gnostic perspective. The lengthy repetitive first section is the primal thrusting that builds up to a brief bit of hesitation and then the orgasmic release of the “in and out again” part. But it’s short-lived. The grim 6/8 dance afterward is that moment of revulsion and strangeness experienced right after climax. Maybe it represents the horror of existence that was produced from the act of reproduction, the wondrous but cruel and inexplicable gift of life. “Mother of the World” indeed.

Mr Seer Creative i have followed your instructions and purchased this music and another by your Swans thing. Perchance I was hypnotized whilst listening to this upon this you tube, yet I did also conciousky think that your music was most appealing. Also the button hole on the reverse of this lovely album cover finally convinced me to pull my finger out. Excuse the terrible pun. From probable new fan. 😈🤠🤘

A lot of comus vibes in this. Expecially the vocals. The song I'm referring to is "song to comus"

Does anyone know some similar tracks to this with the same two or three repeating notes over and over again in a scary athmosphere
@johnsmith5669

Skeleton Tree by Nick Cave, 10,000 Days by Tool, Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath, any of the soundtrack work by Akira Yamaoka, Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown, The Disintegration Loops by William Basinski, anything by Merzbow, anything by Godspeed You Black Emperor. I'd also recomend looking up a list of best horror movie soundtracks. Any artist on those lists is probably worth your time.

I can't quite grasp what the cover represents. From a distance, it looks like a precious little Yorkie. Now that I'm closer, it kind of resembles Chewbacca. Is this a metaphor or am I just overtired?

I think you're dead on about that. I personally feel like this album is about the pain of seeing, of experiencing the harsh realities of life as a young adult. I feel like as a child you only see the beast from far away, and it's unimposing. When you lose your innocence, you see it for what it really is: a nasty, aggressive creature.

generally just considered "post-rock." i.e. non-rock music made using rock instruments. Even for post-rock Swans are very unique. I recommend you listen to their other albums of this vein: To Be Kind, The Glowing Man, Soundtracks for the Blind, Children of God.
