Gira is a very intelectual man, from Nietzsche to Merleau-Ponty, he know his stuff. I think I see Merleau-Ponty in "Perception is a distance in a closed-in space".

This song is even more effective when you know that the word “body” has an unknown origin. No one know where it ultimately came from and what it means in it’s root definition.

This is, by a wide margin, my favorite studio album that Swans put out in the 90s. I must admit that, aside from Blood Promise, I mostly ignored this album for well over a decade after I got into them. It's only within the past year that I realized what a mistake that was. The lyrics, production, and drums are just incredible. R.I.P. Bill Rieflin... you were an incredible drummer.

I remember the first time I heard this song. I was driving to visit a friend living in Kalamazoo, MI at the time. It was overcast and raining for the drive until the sun poked through a small hole in the dark clouds as the rain stopped. Was an interesting aesthetic to accompany the song. Pulled over and immediately bought the record.

I must agree. 1. The Great Annihilator 2. Children of God 3. Shame Humility Revenge (ok, project but Gira is Swans and Skin is Gira) 4. Die Tur ist zu (I personally prefer it above Soundtracks for some tracks, others not) 5. White Light from the mouth/Love of Life (both somewhat the same great album) no after 1997 period things to be seen here though The Seer is a pretty good album IMHO but nothing compared to the above.

When I got this album, I remember calling it the ideal "soundtrack for the apocalypse," but then Soundtracks for the Blind came out. So I figured that was the soundtrack for the desolate wasteland that comes after the end of civilization. So for me, it's between Great Annihilator and SFTB. And I also consider Children of God one of the greats. I love the newer stuff too but I don't know that they could ever get back to this level. If anything is overlooked, IMO, it's the Body Lovers album. It doesn't burn with the same purpose as TGA or SFTB (or have any lyrics) but the sonic intensity and epic arrangements are all there.

@@brennenspice6098 Different strokes for different folks, buddy. I, for one, still respect Gira's artistic integrity and prolific nature, but I was into Swans before they reformed in 2010, and their new stuff does nothing for me. I miss when they wrote concise songs instead of 30-minute "compositions".

Well, according to the law of the stability of energy & matter, the body never really goes anywhere, whether in birth, growth, death, decay, etc ... It's just constantly transforming. It doesn't "MATTER" whether there is someone to see it or not. But soul? spirit? ghost? consciousness? memory? mind? that's open to debate. I think we shouldn't overestimate our consciousness, specially considering humanity's current state of affairs!

That's what I do: Check RU-vid for some worth having in physical form. And when I find something good, I try not to play it on the computer because it sounds like crap.
