Swanston Street Stories, my very short doco (cause of uni guidelines) on homelessness in Melbourne.
i was super nervous on the day of filming, and I was very worried for how they would react to me, however every person I talked to on camera and the ones that didn’t want to be on camera were soooo nice and honestly just genuine people. hearing their stories and what they had to say was very overwhelming and touching.
i just want to say thanks to aaron, adam, paul and shane for allowing me to interview them and ask them very personal and confronting questions, they didn’t have to let me ask them questions and record it but they did.
most of the time homeless people just want to talk and have a conversation, they don’t ask for much, you could sit down and chat to them about the weather or about a sport and they’d happily have a conversation with you.
i encourage everyone to at least at some point in their life stop and have a chat with someone on their street, make them and their stories feel valued and just show some compassion.
if my video at least changed one person’s negative opinion on homeless, it’s an accomplishment.
if you want to donate an awesome organisation that actually gives back is onevoice.org.au... (who run shower busses in melbourne, sydney etc, you can buy specific packs which go to homeless people such as oral hygeine packs, socks and jocks packs, a sleeping bag etc)

Not every homeless person is on drugs or violent. They are human and no one knows when perhaps we might end up in a situation where we end up homeless. Be kind and say hi. ❤ to you all.

I was a addicted to all sorts of drugs & pills , also injecting things that I shouldn’t, I really feel for the guy who lost his hand , that literally could have been me , all it takes is rushing the shot & not doing it properly & I tiny bit misses the vein & then it gets infected & unfortunately you can loose that limb. He would still be in disbelief, & I can’t imagine the depression , & unfortunately there’s basically only 1 thing that would help numb the emotional & physical pain ( drugs ) & that would be keeping him in an endless cycle, he probably wouldn’t be able to get on a methadone/suboxone program either because of no fixed address. People always judge but until you live in their shoes you really have no idea, also what was the reason for using in the 1st place, now put the amputation & homelessness on top & I challenge anyone to try not numb their pain . I hope things change for him soon & he can try live a better life & have love in his life .

I have some very mixed opinions on this. Unpopular ones judging by the comments below. I worked in Melbourne city for a few years at a youth centre and homeless would sleep under an awning behind the building. Each morning, I got pretty sick of cleaning up the needles, rubbish and other drug paraphernalia of homeless people that they'd leave on the ground. It used to make me angry that it was left in an area where kids would play. On one occasion, my workmate saw two shamelessly having sex (during the day) in the bushes right near where the kids were playing. I also bought food for some of them (their specific order, not my choice) and didn't even get a thank you. Nothing. I'd have people be aggressive for money when I'd leave the train station. If they didn't get money, they'd ask for a cigarette (while they've got a lit cigarette in their mouth). I think these first hand experiences really wore me down over time, significantly reduced my willingness to give and my trust that any money given will go to anything of good purpose. Many of the same people begging at train stations or Swanston Street were the same people drinking or doing drugs behind my work and I'd be cleaning up after them. Also, it hasn't helped my perception after going to third world countries where there is real widespread poverty that wasn't caused by personal choices. Extreme poverty, danger and absolutely no safety nets. They don't complain about their city not having free bacon and eggs at the shelter. I'm not trying to be cold hearted and I know many of them are probably lovely people with genuine reasons to be in their positions but not everyone is just misinformed. Many have had their generosity taken advantage of or have had experiences that give them little reason to trust. An interesting question would be, Why are you staying in Melbourne if resources are stretched? What do you need to move forward and never turn back?

They need motivation, it can be hard when you’re addicted to to drugs because all your energy goes towards just getting that drug to feel normal, after that’s done usually there’s not enough time to do anything else. Also a lot have severe depression & other things often from their childhood trauma, like sexual abuse, that stuff really messes people’s heads up & if they don’t have support & the education to know how to move on they often just use drugs to numb the pain as that’s the only thing that has worked for them in the past, even if from the outside others can tell it’s not helping at all they can’t. I really doubt anyone actually wants to live on the streets, there’s a thousand different reasons for why a person is , but usually it’s because of some type of trauma they have gone through in the past .
