If you want to be really gentle with the removal, you should heat up the scales first. You can use warm (but not very hot) water, or a hair dryer (I prefer that). This makes the scales a little softer, so when you pop them off, there will be less damage around the attachment points, and you can easily reuse the scales without having to glue them back on. Also, if you warm up the scales before putting them on, they require a lot less pressure for a perfect fit. I don't have a vice (what many people use for a scale swap), so I often even had to wrap the knife in a cloth and stand on it so that the new scales would be pressed on properly. Since I warm up the scales before putting them on, I can just press them on by hand, or pushing against the table. It's significantly easier.
