Good catch on the Apimaye hive. I'd check for food every three or four days on that one until you see the frames have some weight. Those little feeders don't hold much. And Darren, you may have a bumper crop of honey coming. Hope you had a good mothers day with your mom.
Hey Russell. Yeah, they definitely needed more food than I gave them. I'm hoping for a good harvest. Better than last year anyway. lol Yeah, got all the moms visited through the weekend. It was good. Hope you had a good one as well.
Hi Darren, Apimaye box must not have enough foragers to keep either of the hives fed, you caught them just in time to save them. Might have to feed those all summer especially if it turns dry and the nectar flow stops.
Hey Bowhunters. I think it had adequate bees to start, but the 24 hours wasn't enough as I had foragers in there and they went back to the original hive (that's what I think anyway), that or they absconded because of lack of food and failure. I'll check in on it more often now that I know there's issues. I don't have a lot of experience with three frame splits. I have enough troubles with 5 frame splits. LOL. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for sharing. The 3 frame Apimaye that you added the extra nurse bees into I saw you added some liquid feed. I didn't see any pollen on the one side of the hive. The other side had a little on the one frame. Do the bees not need some pollen to feed? As in what stage do the bees use the bee bread?
Hey Kennith. I believe they mix the pollen with nectar for the mix (Jelly) they feed the larvae before they are capped off. The other bees consume pollen/bee bread as protein. Yes, they do need it. That's the problem with a 3 frame split, it's hard to get it all in there - they must have nectar/honey (carbs) though, or they won't survive. Usually foragers will get some pollen as it's available most of the time in various forms. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hey Peter - I had it locked down for a while, and I did poke a little stick in the hole to open it up. The one on the camera's right side did have a few dead bees blocking it. Thanks for watching.
I was confused on which one you were talking about. I think you're talking about hive 2 or 3 where they were all going in and out of the top. I didn't think that entrance was blocked. That's a good point though, I need to look around on that entrance, because that may be why they were doing that.
Wow what a day BUT I can say I have done things similar an I have learned what ever I thought I did before then I probably did not. But I think you have them straight out now . I think it may be a good idea to check your double nuc about a week an maybe refill there feeder one more time just to be in the safe side. I think last year I had added around twenty more supers to my operation an I already had a bunch . I thought I would not have to purchase for a long time. Well I have put EVERYONE I own on this year an now I am having to pull full supers off an extract an put back on because I am out an they all are full . I am hoping this is a good problem 🤷♂️🤷♂️. Do not pull your hair out trying to figure out what your bees are doing because I have already pulled mine out an it does not help LOL . Thanks
Yeah, I was in LaLa land there for a bit. I'm not sure what happened. In a couple weeks I will check those requeening hives to be sure they are on the right track. I have some folks asking me about nucs, and I'm telling them I'm not ready yet. Sounds like you are having a nuc adventure as well. lol Take care.
