I received a set of A.Gallo's Naturale 36 watercolour paints as a Christmas gift last year and I think it's time to swatch them. 🙂
This set is a "complete collection of exquisite earth, mineral and plant based pigments from the Mediterranean basin to the forests of Sumatra, from the mountains of Chile to the volcanos of Iceland" (www.agallocolors.com/shop/nat....
A.Gallo added new paints to their range in 2023 and 12 of them are included in this set. They are: cinabro hue, lilac, Han purple, azurite hue, malachite hue, Victoria green, stil de grain (light), orange iron oxide, English red, Icelandic red earth, Van Dyck brown and tourmaline.
11 of these paints (buff titanium, potter's pink, zirconium blue, lapis lazuli, copper blue, green gold, gold ochre, raw sienna (Badia), ercolano red, morellone and slate grey) are also included in A. Gallo's collection 48 set (it used to be called the classic set).
Stil de grain is made using buckthorn berries and the paint has almost a paste-like texture, this paint will appreciate more water than standard watercolour paints).
Orange iron oxide was a surprise to me. It's made using PR102, and in my experience, the colour of this pigment usually is dark red brown (like caput mortuum). This particular PR102 is orange brown as the name suggests and quite granulating.
I noticed that the paints were quite dusty after I opened them which is what I also noticed when opening the 48 paint set. It's not a big deal, just means that a layer of paint needs to be rinsed off to avoid dust on the paper.
