Another good reason to make a swatch is to see how colors behave when washed. Helps to let you know if colors will bleed into one another so you can take steps to prevent a disaster in your finished work.

OMG! I am one of those people who actually LOVES, LOVES, LOVES to swatch! I have often swatched an entire skein before I find the fabric I like 😂 The Yarn shop I work at always gives me the new yarn to make swatches for display 🎉 You should look up swatching in the round without floats! It is genius. I agree with your choice of the Seaglass swatch 👍

Yes, Mark, I was shouting at the screen, “stick with your first choice!” LOL I have never made a garment. Thought I might like to start with something “simple” like a tee, tank or vest. The thought scares me. I still can’t read patterns well yet. Seems Greek to me. I don’t know how you learned so much in such a short amount of time. Bam, sweaters, bam color work. Wow! Looking forward to your next posts!

I love your videos. Your voice is so relaxing and calm. And in the evenings when i am crocheting in bed and one of my young boys joins me they calmly fall asleep to your lovely voice and knowing fibre art is for everyone. My 7 year old still can't quite co ordinate the hook to crochet but he keeps giving it a go. Can't wait to see your tour of the UK and Dublin. And see all the yarn places i can hopefully convince my other half to take me too 😂😂

I love the seaglass colors you selected, and the color order!! I agree those were the best choices of the options provided. One thought -- if you want the gold color to blend in more with the other colors, you could just use a shorter band of that color so it doesn't stand out as a large band of gold. It would be be small highlight of a gold color. Thank you for these great videos! I don't usually do a swatch because I don't do wearable projects. I do more blankets and things that don't get worn.

I love your colors for you Sea Glass sweater. My favorite yarn arrangement is the complimentary color swatch. When I swatch in the round, my carried yarns are very long .I can block the swatch and have the yarns intact but positioned around the swatch and not under it as I measure. The other thing I have done is to knit some or all of a sleeve as a gauge swatch. Best wishes!
@genevieveleger8639
@genevieveleger8639 3 месяца назад
Your Seaglass swatch looks beautiful! Personally, I like the gold, but I wonder if color dominance might help recede the gold yarn a bit if you’re not sure about keeping it in. Idk how you do colorwork, but if using two hands, holding the gold yarn in the right hand/on top might help it blend in a bit better as it’ll become the background color. Or use it on just one row, instead of 2 consecutive rows (although that will break the pattern), but looking at the top of your swatch where there’s only one row of gold and it seems to blend in better/not look so much like a stripe. Looking forward to seeing the final results, I have some fingering yarn I bought years ago that I had no idea what to do with, and I think you might convinced me to make a Seaglass Cardigan if your fingering version ends up alright! Roxanne Richardson also has a tutorial on how to swatch in the round without having all those strands in the back if anyone is interested

I do swatch for color work now. I can’t tell you how many disasters I had by not doing so. I thought they looked great in the arrangement I had picked But when I worked on it in the actually sweater I was like What Was I thinking and they ended up in a WIP never ever to be seen again. I loved your first choice best with the rainbow. It 👀 more cohesive. Another awesome video 😊

I swatch begrudgingly, with little patience, and only once. If the gauge is close enough I just cast on and figure I can block to size later. If it is not close enough i adjust one needle size and cast on, again figuring I can block to size later. I certainly do not have the patience to block my swatches. This method has generally worked well for me, and in worst case scenarios, if the sweater does not fit, I find someone who it will fit and give it to them. :)

I hear you! If it’s been a while since I’ve picked up some needles, then I’ll just grab a scan and start knitting to get my hands back into it and usually I get my rhythm back. If I just jump into a pattern, will either end up too tight or too loose. I never watched and never saw my mom or grandmother watch. We just knew what our gauge was meaning I tend and a little looser my middle sister 10 and it tighter my mom and grandma were the same one tighter one it looser.the only time I ever I’ve never used before and I’m making something for someone else or to sell. Then I need it to be spot on.

I liked the third swatch with Megan's assistance. I plan to make the Seaglass tshirt so I'd be interested in the KAL info 😊 I bought the pattern and got stuck on the same issue you had: do I use leftover yarn in the pantry or do I start fresh? I'm leaning toward the former but we shall see! (And I'm working on completing some gift knits: two hats and one shawl). Thanks for the swatch demo. I don't generally do them, but I've been lucky in my size results for the most part with garments. But I'm slowly coming around to the idea of doing a swatch more often, so thank you.

Doing the same pairs of colors in multiple rows can make the sweater look striped. I mixed my 7 colors in different combinations throughout for my first sweater (I had removed yellow and white as too extreme). The next time I made seaglass, I used 24 colors and mixed them all up.

The first time I saw someone swatching in the round, I was amazed. I do swatch for all person-specific wearables but not for caps, scarves, and other one-size-fits-most items. I learned by swatching that I am a loose knitter and have to adjust either needle/hook size or follow the pattern for the next smaller size, or both. Today I am making beanies for teens in foster care. The bad part is that they all want solid black. The little kids enjoy color but the teens just want to fit in. So black it is.

I love both of the Rainbow versions but I think the dithered version (not the smooth gradient of the ROYGBIV) is the best because it lets the individual colours shine more with the contrast. Idk if I'd say the pure rainbow gradient would be too on-the-nose even if it is, y'know 🌈🏳‍🌈💅. I'm sure there's some mathematical way of arranging 7 colours so that each pair of two is in the pattern once and only once with no repeats which would be 21 different colour combos (not counting order) but I'm not certain how it would be done, and it would be a lot to keep track of.

Do you buy a single ball of yarn to swat ch before you commit to a sweater quantity? If so, and you like your swatch but then want to get a sweater quantity how do you manage colour lot numbers as these purchases will be made at different times?
@mendezcher
@mendezcher 3 месяца назад
I feel like most people will buy the sweaters quantity ( for the dye lot reason you mentioned) and if they don’t get gauge, they’ll either adjust needle size or adjust the size of sweater to fit the gauge. If neither work, they’ll find a new pattern to fit that gauge.

It’s a much better method without all those strands along the back!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gv3lMDkFRMo.html I also do garter for the first few rows and the first and last few stitches of every row so it doesn’t curl. Hi. Great video again. I highly recommend to read or see about gauge swatch in Principles of Knitting and Patty Lions book. Very important is to simulate the gravitation and hang the swatch with a bit of weight. This is specially convenient for fibres as alpaca, superwash yarn, linen, cotton. Recommend also Roxanne Richardson tutorial for fake swatching in the round ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DVFXJuOUNAI.htmlsi=1FpmV7VFdY899Dya

This is boring and confusing and yes, I was yelling at the screen! If you are going to teach and share on You-Tube, it can't be this much time all about you and which COLORS OF FINGERING suit you best!!! Extremely frustrating and confusing about fingering and double-stranding and not even using the needle size in the Seaglass instructions! Are you customizing to completely change the gauge, i.e., rewrite the pattern a la Andrea in Fruity Knitting??? Except for this I am thinking what a great teacher you are, Mark. I'm new here and now I'm not so sure.
