I really enjoyed your video. I am a new-by and I work out of my home. I am very fortunate to have a large craft room and solder from garage. Thank you for sharing your that you do this because you like it and not for business. I won't ever be able to afford milling machine and stuff but I do love doing stuff.

A tip I learned is to flatten solder wire first prior to cutting the pallions. Helps it stay in place better. Through a rolling mill if you have one or just flatten with a hammer. Can also run the solder through a folded piece of sandpaper to clean it prior to cutting. Thank you for making this video. I have that same torch and struggle with sweat soldering using it.

Nice thanks for sharing your technique ! I do have one tiny tip if you don't mind? When you lube your saw blade, just run the product down going "with the grain/saw teeth" in one swipe. This will work perfect vs going against the teeth which tends to cause sticking and also dulls those tiny teeth. Little adjustment but you will feel a noticeable difference in your blade. Good stuff thanks again!!

Dan I just noticed this was from 9 years ago. . . where did you go . . . come back! I just bought my Hot Shot Blazer and need to watch successful jewelry making using it.

Brilliant video! I'm a jeweler by trade, and I enjoyed watching your video (while looking for pointers for a brass project I'm working on). Thank you for this rather straight-forward example of sweat-soldering!

I liked the video, and had fun with sighs, drinks and sirens. When are you going to post the rest of the videos about the copper textured ring?

Just a heads up! Handy flux produces more toxic fumes!

Great video thank you. my question is in regards to the crockpot, whats in it and what temperature is it at. Or is it just a way to keep the warm metals clean and due to the porcelain finish, a way to keep things from sticking to the metals? I am going to be working on making some spurs for family members. Also will the heating technique that you used in this video work with say carbon steel to silver? Heat the steel and let the steel heat convect to the silver? Any advise would be humbly appreciated.

Dale, what kind of solder are you using? And I saw what looks like copper wire in the background. What is that for? I'm trying to solder pennies together....and the thin side to thin side, not flat against flat, so I'm looking for lots of advice.

I used medium silver solder for this. The copper wire in the background is just part of the mess that is usually my workbench. I had recently made some copper jump rings and other copper goodies. If you flux properly and have enough heat, you should be able to get the pennies to solder together. I plan on posting some more videos soon if you're interested.

What brand or butane torch are you using? Can you adjust the flame on it? I'm trying to figure out if I want to buy a butane torch or a propane one. Any suggestions?

to calculate the length of metal required for a ring you need to know the how to calculate the circumference of a circle from the diameter. This is pi ( usually taken as 3.14) multiplied by the diameter. This is why he measures the outer diameter of the intended ring, adds on the thickness of the 2 metals to be used, and multiplies by 3.14. This gives the length of metal needed to make the ring in the size he wanted. He goes down a bit on the length because he knows that working the metal would make it thinner ( and therefore longer) That's what I learned that its OK to assume and cut smaller so as not to waste precious metals. I hope this helps.

So I made a silver ring. Will this work if I want the copper on the inside instead of the outside?

What I have heard copper against skin could be allergenic, and stain the skin

Is there an easier way to do the sizing? I don't have a gadget like that, what to speak of knowing anything about Pi. By the way, what is the name of that measuring gadget?

+grannynara Digital Caliper, found in most hardware stores. calculation is the diameter of the ring size,+ thickness of the metal multiplied by pie (3.14)

Use a lapel (lavalier) mic so that your voice doesn't keep changing volume, which is annoying.

He should explain a bit more about type of solder being used and why. Also the importance of cleaning the solder as well as the ring strips prior to soldering in order to ensure the solder can flow. Just sanding it without saying why seems vague for a tutorial video. Should explain everything as he moves along to make things clearer . Health and safety are vital always. He seems a bit slapdash and casual about everything. Soldering has to be accurate not hit and miss ....... where is that protective fireproof surface under his fire brick ? Health and safety come first prior to any heating , annealing or soldering...
