You should come see Frölunda - Brynäs in Scandinavium, Gothenburg this coming Saturday, should be twice the attendance and a level up in hockey quality too!
You should try to do another visit after new years when they play in the arena next door. When supporters from both teams are allowed, only AIK fans that time
That won't be doable. The last time these 2 teams face each other this season is the 12th of february 2025. Globen is still closed by then. Only chance is if they face off in the playoffs, which would be sick.
@@amfibiegrodan Globen will be opened by february. Kite on ice february 1st and then Beijer Hockey Games 6 to 9th of February. Official deadline for Globen is january 10th.
@@JorgenKreedzdoesn't look like AIK and Djurgården plans to use Avicii Arena until the possible Play-off derbies in March/April :-(. At least if you look at their schedules. I really hope that it is not the case. Because a derby is not really genuine derby without Away supporters. It would also be good to have Avicii Arena ready in mid-february when the Group Stage in the Swedish Cup in football starts and since AIK is not able to use Strawberry Arena in February one of the matches is bound to be at Tele2 Arena in the same area as Hovet and Avicii Arena (Presumably the first match 15th of February which is the same day when we play against Mora in hockey). Djurgården probably wants to have everything there the 16th of February too. The fourth hockey derby of the season will also be there the 12th of February so hopefully some solutions will be made to have Globen on the date you mentioned considering that the 3rd derby of the season is scheduled to happen on the 11th of January.
Wow! I'm from Bell Island and I was just in Stockholm for a vacation. I've been there twice and seeing a game there is a must. But now that I know this Derby exists, I'll have to time my next visit to catch this match. Thanks for making this video.
Man, that Scott Pooley moment had me tearing up a bit 😅. Loved him as a player, and as you said, "Even if it wasn't in a Growlers jersey," it was great to see him in action. I certainly miss the championship back in 2019
This is not only the biggest hockey rivalry in Sweden. This is the biggest derby in Scandinavia because both of the clubs were founded in 1891, just 3 weeks apart from each other, and because the rivalry between AIK and Djurgården is present in various other sports too such as Football. Stockholm may actually be the only capital in Scandinavia and many other Western European capitals/large cities in general actually has rivalry scene between it's teams that looks like the ones in İstanbul, Athens, Thessaloniki and Belgrade where the city giants play against each other regularly in various sports besides football Ice hockey In Stockholm with AIK vs Djurgården (Especially since 2022) and basketball in İstanbul, Athens, Thessaloniki and Belgrade.
@@RobertGreeley Just to inform you, and just to put those big words above into perspective:. The top league in Sweden Hockey is SHL, the Sweden Hockey League. Neither AIK nor Djurgården plays in the top league. They are not even in the top of the second league. Hockey in Stockholm is not that healthy in the moment.
@52Tenor about the situation in Stockholm regarding the hockey... You're right it has actually been like that for like over 20 years now, and it has just gotten worse and worse :-(. This is a thing that me and my fellow AIK supporters and our antagonists of Djurgården won't deny that these derbies are fun, exciting and tense but also with a sad and dark twist because it has been played in the 2nd tier (Hockeyallsvenskan) since 2022. There are various reasons why it ended up like this, just like you mentioned... For example, how hostile Stockholm municipality and Greater Stockholm Region have been towards the hockey for a good while now. This is actually extremely sad because this is literally Sweden's trademark rivalry which if you look back in the history is not only rooted in football which tends overshadow the hockey nowadays for good reasons. The rivalry between AIK and Djurgården has some deep historic roots in the hockey too. I really hope that our time in Hockeyallsvenskan right now actually give our hockey sections some run for their money because since all of the big Stockholm teams (Including Södertälje SK) are in the 2nd tier and it's now kinda a race against the time to get promoted in a good or at least a decent shape to SHL.
you should try going to a Brynäs - Leksand Derby. also one of the biggest and older rivalries in the SHL. Next game is November 28th and I have tickets to go with 4 friends its going to be insane again
Or the derby with the two northernmost teams, Luleå and Skellefteå. Frequently in the top of the top Swedish league, where Skellefteå is the defending champion. Great rivalry!
The Predators have something similar to this but I'm pretty sure that's it. The Habs are also known to have a more rowdy/European feel to some of their games.
This is just a taste of how crazy this derby is. The derby is usually played in the globe, but since the globe is being renovated, this game is being played in the hovet which will be demolished eventually, the stadium is so old and unsafe to have supporters from both teams that they only had AIK supporters at this game because of the risk of trouble. You should come back next year when fans from both teams are allowed at the game.
i know that they only play eachother on the preseason but you need to check out skellefteå vs björklöven, that is the biggest rivary! skellefteå vs luleå which you have been to isnt even close (it is if you ask an luleå fan but 9,9/10 skellefteå fans would say that the björklöven games is way bigger)
You should definitly try to get to a game between Rosenheim and Landshut in the German second division. There might not be a more heated rivaly in the whole Hockey world.
@@RobertGreeley the German second League as a whole has many exiting fan experiences in stock. But the games between those two Clubs are something else.
The games between Leksand and Mora a while back was the greatest thing ever, with an standing audience the arena was packed over an hour before the game started, and the speaker was calling out to "move in" so that even more people got in. Insane. A really historic rivalry above and beyond this little "issue" between two teams in the capital city.
@@linkek6088 we are most likely coloured by our own experiences, I would like to add the dimension that the whole city knew about the game at game-day. And that kind of anticipation just cannot happen in a capital with just a percentage of hockey fans.
@RobertGreeley Hockey in the north is much more passionated. From a sport perspective the violent fans around AIK - DIF they ruin the atmosphere both for soccer and hockey.
I mean, the biggest derby in sweden is up for debate. looking at a geographical standpoint, historical standpoint and ultras standpoint you'd find different winners. But it'd probably be either Malmö-Rögle (not as big anymore, but still a good derby nonetheless), Frölunda-Färjestad as they're both fighting for the title of "the #1 hockey city in sweden" (but it's mostly just seen as kids heckling each other) and surströmmings derbyt (Timrå-Modo). Personally, id say the later is the only true derby in the top-flight Swedish hockey considering how much history they have (Modo as one of the best clubs at creating players and Timrå as having the oldest ultras/fan club)
@@davidlofgren4577 interesting! One thing I heard a lot of from my travels is the second league have all the best derbies now. Not so much in the SHL. Any truth to that you think?
@@RobertGreeley oh yeah, some derby's have been "split up" as in the teams are playing in different divisions. Examples would be Björklöven and Luleå/Skellefteå and Mora/Leksand, but the leagues below Hockeyallsvenskan and SHL are where you'd get the best bang for your buck IMO!
@@RobertGreeley Compared to what is available in Sweden. Probably the best hockey in Europe. The very best teams in the second League is not bad, but current ly no teams from Stockholm are close to the top.
Djurgården and AIK play in HockeyAllsvenskan. It's the 2nd tier league. If you want the El Classico of Swedish hockey then you should watch Färjestads BK (team from Karlstad) against Frölunda HC, aka Frölunda Indians (team from Gothenburg). They are in 4th and 2nd place respectively in the SHL (tier 1 league) and have by far the biggest rivalry in the league. Both of those teams would wipe the floor with both AIK and Djurgården. Some former or current Frölunda players who either played in or are still playing in the NHL (a total of 96 Frölunda players have played in the NHL since their first player was drafted in 1981): Henrik "The King" Lundqvist, Joel Lundqvist, Rasmus Dahlin, Alexander Steen, Fredrik Andersen, Robin "Panda" Lehner, Carl Klingberg, Erik Karlsson (Defenseman), Calle Johansson.
@@RobertGreeley Ah, yeah, that is a pretty big rivalry. However, Fäjestad and Frölunda are not even remotely close on the map but their rivalry is formed from regularly being in the top 5 and either have to win against the other to get the gold or beat the other to prevent them from getting the gold. It's the same with Skellefteå and Frölunda. They met each other in the playoffs last season and I think it ended 4/3 in matches in favor of Skellefteå.
That is not the biggest hockey rivalry, not even close. Brynäs vs leksand and frölunda vs färjestad. There are also so called classics like brynäs vs djurgården(champions battle, because the two has the most gold won), brynäs vs färjestad (coffee derby, because they have the biggest coffee companies in sweden... Gevalia and löfbergs lila). Brynäs, Leksand, Frölunda, Färjestad are the clubs with the most followers in sweden, you can find supporter clubs in every part of the country of the first two(bif & lif).
