The Gripen's great because they engineered so much of the plane to be hot-swappable. Like, if you engineer and build a better version of a sub-system the Gripen is built to allow you to just take a couple boxes out, and put a couple boxes in, and voila, you just upgraded the jet.
@@paladin0654 It was a little documentary on RU-vid. One of many I watched about the Gripen a while back. I tried to go back and find it but I couldn’t. I probably could if I spent a lot of time looking. There may be some results of those combat exercises on google.
Every video about this nice fighter is forgetting to mention one of it's key design points. Sweden is not expecting to withstand an initial attack from a much stronger enemy (like Russia), which would immediately strike the airfields. Thus Gripen is designed to be operational from ordinary roads with a turnaround time of about 15 minutes with a crew of only 6. STOL capabilities and climb rates are exceptional. Also the cost is crucial for a small country, and Gripen is exceptionally cheap per hour to fly.
Yep, if Ukraine had them right now (and the training required to use them effectively) they'd probably be very effective against the Russians, more so than any American planes would have been. As they'd have no problems at all with the lack of operational airfields remaining.
Very very important note! It's easy to miss things like that I suppose in comparisons, maybe because they are not used to this being an important factor in the comparision.
@@Marco-tb1uj The F35 is overrated, if that's what you're referring to... Its stealth capabilities will be countered soon enough, and that'll require a complete redesign to counter the new radars and other air defense tech. There's other approaches to avoiding detection then actual stealth that's more future proof as well as both cheaper and more compatible with a otherwise better plane. Yes, Europa has gone with canards on our fighter jets (be they the Gripen, Euro fighter or Rafael), but our fighters can do the job done better in other ways for each of them. Yes, there's certain niches where the F35 is currently the only NATO compatible option, for instance it seems increasingly likely that Germany will buy some F35s to carry the US nukes into battle in case of nuclear war, since the Euro fighter, Gripen etc isn't compatible with US nukes, while the F35 is. And yes, the US has other fighters. But they each have their own issues. I'm not saying that European fighters are superior to the US ones. But the idea that we're somehow far inferior is a US fantasy. The US keeps thinking that its technology is superior to everyone else and underestimating the rest of the world. A bit of humility would be useful. Especially since US fighters haven't actually been tested against the latest and greatest in a war against a great power. Bombing Iraqis or Afghans etc just doesn't prove anything.
@@Marco-tb1uj Also, killing what's in front of you really isn't that useful. What about what's above, below, left of, right of or behind you? Both ground based, sea based and air based air defense. The US isn't the only nation in the world with modern air to air and ground to air missiles easily capable of downing modern US fighters.
One strength in Swedish jet fighters is that they don't need a perfect airfield to take off. Any long enough road road works. So planes can be hidden in forest and take off from the road next to the forest(Which can be seen at 9:50, that's a normal road). So taking out the airfields don't mean the fighters will be taken out as in the case for almost any other nation. Ridiculous to compare it to F-35, when F-35 is 5 times more costly and 20 times higher maintenance cost.
This has been a thing for Sweden since the Draken, in the case of an attack on Sweden they want to be able to hide as many aircraft around the country as possible, they're also very easy to refuel and rearm so it could be done by civilians in case of an attack
@@vega469 Homie come with some proof before you say something like that. The F35 need 2500m long runway while the JAS only need 500 meter. So no your very wrong, BUT almost everyone can land on something much smaller.
The Swedes are pretty clever. I've 4 Saab autos and have loved them all > I know they were separate companies, but it shows the care they put in their products ;-)
Well, last thing I heard was that they come with Angry Birds preinstalled, to give the pilot something to do while all those auto systems do the work! Or not . . . .
@@manganvbg90 Don't mention that. We were really stupid in Sweden and decided that we didn't want to spend money being a part of that discovery. We fucked up royally while Norway was kind enough to make the offer.
@@sailingnow7479 I believe so. The US does sometimes use allied equipment designs in their planes in return for some of our tech like engines or missile design. I mean one of the best us fighters in ww2 used a British engine.
I dont wanna sound rude but russia could wipe out sweden with a single push of a button. Its not something i wish to ever happen, but thats the situation we are facing. As long as countrys like USA and russia can have about 6000 nuclear weapons each, noone is safe.. :( and lets not forget all the secret weapons thes surely have. We can only hope that we all stop producing weapons one day..
I would guess it's an engineering culture, much like Germany? Canada has over 3 times the population, and we have not built a plane since WW2. Our vast resources and no threat is making Canada complacent.
Sweden makes some mighty fine products. I tried breaking a Husqvarna 400 motorcycle's piston ring in a 6" US made vice. Instead of the vice breaking the piston ring, as I would've bet money would've happened, the Swedish piston ring broke the jaws of the American made vice!! AMAZING!! 👏
I love the design, I love how capable it is while costing far less and only a fraction to operate compared to other jets, and if that is not enough the Swedes hit a grand slam with the name Gripen (Griffin)~
Yeah the word gripen translates to griffin, i have never understood why the viggen is called viggen even as a swede, but the draken is the swedish word for dragon and is something i really like
Very informative video. Hats off. Also, the Gripen is a super intelligent fighter, so the Swedish deserve absolute respect. And this video nicely detailed its strengths.
So do I. The Gripen or the Rafale. But unfortunately, that won't happen. The US will never let us. Remember the Arrow ? So we'll pay through the nose for the underachieving, overpriced F-35. So frustrating.
Gripen is a good aircraft, but in Finland it lost to F-35 mainly due to lack of weapons that can be attached and available upgrades to it and because it is still sort of prototype. Finland cant afford to be the tester of these aircarfts. We have bad experience with NH-90 helicopters that needed a decade of upgrades and updates until it was fully functional. Also the political factor was probably a big thing in this decision. We used MIG fighter before the collapse of USSR, after the collapse it was sort of statement to use US made aircrafts instead of USSR made, to tie us more to the west. We were tied politically to USSR although we were independent nation and we "had" to buy half of aircrafts from USSR.
@@paladin0654 Lobbyists and pocket politicians. The US owns the majority stake in every formerly nationalized Canadian industry. Bill gates alone owns 20% of Canadian -not so- National Rail, Suncor owns Petro Canada, Colt owns -Diemaco- Colt Canada, BAE's american arm owns the LAV production facilities, Lockheed and McDonald Douglas own the scraps of Canada's fighter jet programs. The CIA permeates the Canadian government. Although, to be fair, being a co-equal NORAD partner was far more valuable than building the Avro Arrow. So, that's how. Raw cash or a better deal.
@@metatechnologist mainly due to the easy maintenance, like it’s probably the most economical 4+ Gen aircraft you can get Truly a SAAB, decent price, great quality, long lasting… I miss Saab cars 😞
Many people don’t understand that turnaround time is more important than number of fighters. Your average US airbase with 200 aircraft will only have 100 available to fly at any one time, SAAB can have 100 aircraft and 99 will be green for flying at the same time. Not to mention almost every other aircraft needs a day for a full combat refit in the case of standard battle damage and flight deterioration. SAAB can be battle ready within the hour even in the case of heavy battle damage, because all the parts are really easy to switch out
One of the greatest benefits for Gripen is the cost per flight hour. Super rich countries might afford to give their F35 pilots 100's of flight hours worth of training but Gripen pilots get the same hours at a fraction of the cost. And lets not talk about F22 hangar decorations... two drops of rain and they're grounded.
The Gripen is a cool and capable jet fighter no doubt. Our American pilots can spend all the time they need in a simulator. In addition they do get hundreds of hours in training flying the Jet. The biggest advantage of the F 22s and F 35s is STEALTH! But all the way around it is the best Fighter ever. At least for now. Look at it like this. The F22 has been in combat operations for a long time more than a decade. All over the world. Guess how many have been shot down? NONE! If one of America's enemies was able to shoot a F 22 down. They would have it on the news all over the world. The F 35s are just getting into combat now. Israel has used their F 35s to bomb and destroy targets deep inside Syria. They have advanced Russian Radar. The F 35s flew in bombed multiple targets and flew home. Now I ask you could any other Fighter Jet do that ? They used ground Penetrating radar to bomb underground targets. Say what you want about the 22 and 35 . But they are the most deadly aircraft Jet Fighter's ever.....so far . Just think America is already developing the next level of Jet Fighter's now. If you sent 4 Gripens to take out one F 22 . My money's on the F 22 . All day long.
No just because I said what I said. Don't think for one second that we don't love and respect our Swedish allies. You guys Rock! Much love from America
And that it can lift of from normal roads instead of a prefect flat airfield. So taking out/bombing Swedish airfield don't mean fighters will stop flying. Maybe that's what you meant with F22
@@larrybone4349 afaik the best they have is the s300, which has been/is being replaced by the s400 in Russia. The f22 hasn't fought a single actual NPO, nor has the f35. They are also much more finicky, so you better hope you have a perfect runway that the opponent doesn't just bomb
IIRC The Griffin is also very intentionally designed for dispersed use. Taking off, landing, and refueling from local highways, with no vulnerable airfields needed. That makes it unique, the only fighter that can operate indefinitely even when all airbases have been destroyed. A HUGE advantage. Some of your b-roll footage shows that clearly.
@@9hk38f You are wrong my guy not every military aircraft can refuel in highways actually there is only few that can do so and it's because of their size or other factors
@@smuel362 Or other factors? Well now I am interested in your "knowledge" please further explain these other factors, and what planes are capable of landing on make shift runways. I didn't mention landing, so rather rude of you to tell me I am wrong, about something I did not mention. I was talking about refueling in the air. Which yes, pretty much every fighter style plane can do. But since you want to stick your nose around, and act like you know what you are talking about, please explain what other factors, effect a fighter jets ability, to land on less then desirable terrain.
Another great video by a great channel. Ukraine is going to have Gripen (saga animal "Gryphon" in English), political support is overwhealming. And Ukranian pilots have been flying them in Sweden. So it seems Ukraine will be operating a mix of F16 and Gripen airplanes. They communicate fine, so they can also operate together effectively. (However operating groups of Gripen gives exceptional situation awarenes and target information.) Gripen is rather more comparable to F35 than F16.
I have multiple family members who work at SAAB and i have also been there to look at things and i can't say much because NDA but i will say the electronic warfare on the Gripen E is absolutely outrageously powerful.

The fact the 3 most modern European fighter jet,s seem so similar in design and function makes me wonder what could of been achieved if they managed to put aside their petty political differences and worked together on one unified project .wonderful things most likely
That already happened, the jaguar jet, the tornado jet, the new tempest jet coming out, also france was working with UK in the typhoon project with other countries but pulled out of the project and made the similar rafale jet.
@@epiphone5696 indeed. But France got out because France needed a plane able to go an aircraft carrier. No one wanted todo it other than France thus they got out. And they did prety good job with the Rafale.
Sweden builds excellent fighters (4++) no doubt and their ability to use "rough airfields) only adds to their worth...but...when the rest of the major competitors are building 5th and 6th generation aircraft, the Swedes are designing 4+++ aircraft, you have to ask "Why" ? If there's one thing I still have any faith in is Sweden's judgement regarding what is best for Sweden.
Sweden seems to have great judgement in many ways all the time these day: Sane compared to most in things such as the most sane covid policies, no authoritarian lockdowns more or less. AI research project and development with a bigger budget than any other venture in Swedish history. Stockholm is becoming the Silicon Valley of Europe if it growth continues. Military funding and defense is being priortized. Leader in number of start ups. ..
its a paper-plane.. they havent any real planes left. if they did, we would have seen them by now (but im just a random dude on the internet so what do i know)
For any english speaking individual out there.....just a heads up, imagine there is a double EE vowel in the name rather than an "i". Pronouncing it as "greepen" would be phonetically closer to how the swedish word is actually supposed to be spoken.
One factor about the SU-57 not spoken about is the number flying! If intelligence reports are to be believed, then there aren't too many of them in the Russian Air Force to date. Few, if any, reports of sightings of/contacts with them have emerged from the Ukraine war so far. The rest of the Russian Air Force is not fairing at all well in that war, and high plane losses have surprised Western military analysts.
Anybody know reasons why Finland preferred F-35 over this? Gripen looks really suited for that territory. Is it maybe because of the radar blocking / jamming capabilites and trust that sweden participates if needed

@ 0:29 secs. He is wearing spectacles. These days pilots can wear a pair of glasses or contacts. A Tornado pilot, who was shot down during the Gulf War, was wearing contacts which fell out after using his ejection seat....
@Dennis HertzThe Gripen when used on home soil is superior to the Russian jets. The F-35 is an ophensive jet as stealth allows it to operate on enemy territory. Large countries with empty territories should invest in Gripens and detection infrastructure. It’s just a much more cost effective solution that is easily upgradable and allows a country to buy more planes that on home soil will easily outcasts almost everything out there with ease.
@@nictheflick As you know, the word "draken" can translate to both dragon or kite but you are right that it is "kite" that is the name of the plane. (It gets even more complicated when you realize that the reason Sweden is using the word for dragon for kite as well is because of the Chinese heritage of kites where they sometimes was called Chinese dragons... :) )
@@kittehgo it's also cronyism. the F-35 program only got approval because they promised Congress to create jobs all over the USA. when this led to cost overruns, the only way to keep the program afloat was to foist it onto allied countries to foot the bill. that's why even non-NATO allied countries were offered sales of it and decided to buy. hell, even neutral countries like Switzerland and Finland
Italy, the UK, and Turkey had already bought some F35 before they were fully developed and they have been made (Turkey has recently been extracted from this list) part of the production. Italy and the UK provide parts that are used to make the F35s. The F35 is more costly but is much MUCH better than the Grippen, Eurofighter, and Rafale in general, there is a reason it is a 5th gen fighter and not a 4/4.5 gen fighter like the rest of the Europeans fighters (including Russia's Sukhoi btw).
It depends on how you look at it. If you look at military tech, Sweden is pretty much spearheading alot of that department (as pointed out in this video) Large chunks of US gear, vehicles and ammo are either Swedish made, made with swedes or on swedish blueprints. We also have a really high standard for our troops, just ask the Marines who have been over here to compete with the Swedish Rangers. A single Gotland class Submarine sunk the US flagship Aircraft carrier "The Ronald Regan" in the war games a few years back. From this perspective, we *really* capable. However... We are only a country of 10m people. Our entire population is less than Los Angeles. Even if we had the best tech in the universe and if every single soldier were literally Rambo, in almost any war we would be ridiculously outnumbered. Opposing a country like Russia, China, US or even India we would be outnumbered like 500 or 1000 to 1. So yea, from that perspective, we are pretty much defenseless. We could probably do some damage, possibly even massive damage, before we went down... But we *would* go down if it was a 1on1 fight, there is no doubt about it.
Officially. Sweden rely on the Fins.... just in case. Tomorrov Fins and Swedes are joining NATO. Thanks to Putin and Lavrov. More nukes to the world.!!!
@@F1rstWorldNomaD I agree with your assessment 100% Attacking Sweden though would be ridiculous. For example. Lets say Russia would attack. Ukraine who at this point can't even compare to the Swedish Military in any aspect. Is defending really well! Russia is paying the price for hubris. Ukraine is fighting for their democracy. And they haven't been democratic that long. Now i'm not gonna trample over Ukraines efforts, they're doing good so far in what they can do at the moment. But then imagine, if the same war machine would attack Sweden, where people have lived "Free and democratic" for years. The average swede sort of live a life of luxury compared to many other countries. If someone tried to take that away like in Ukraine. I think a war machine that Russia wouldn't suspect would be woken up tbh. The cost would be too much for even Russia. Even if we would in the end get destroyed.
One incifent involving Quantas Airliner somewhere above Asian skies have proven that theres a cheaper way to make any aircraft totally invisible to any sensors
It's literally just an update of the old Gripen. Same thing as with the F-15 Strike Eagle. We do have a program for the development of a new fighter jet, but it will be many years until it will be finished, and that's if it even will get built at all.
