That's actually why he introduced the Nobel peace Prize, he invented dynamite to be used to make tunnels, in the mining industry and was quite appalled when it was also used in war, so he didn't want his name associated with it, so he donated his entire fortune to be used for the Nobel Prize. Dynamite was just one of hundreds of inventions he was behind.

I'm from England but I lived and worked in Sweden back in the early 70's. I then lived and worked in the USA in the late 70's. All countries have both good and not so good aspects to life - I enjoyed my time in both countries - but personally I enjoyed life in Sweden more. Nowhere is perfect. However, I found then that the Swedes were closer to the Brits in that they put greater value on their work/life balance, valued their community care/public health systems and were generally more appreciative and showed greater care for the environment compared to my experience in the USA. I've been to both countries recently - still felt the same to me!

@@mikewarner5187 A lot has changed over the years ofc, but compared to the US, Sweden still has its values that probably won’t ever cross the sea. Mostly of what has changed in Sweden is the crime rate. Otherwise I’d say it’s about the same.

@@johananas8407The crime rate has not gone up. The only crimes that's more common now, compared to fifty years ago, are the ones that goes BOOM. Like guns and bombs that the gangs use to fight each other. All other, especially violent crime, have gone down. Figures are easy to find from various sources, but it seems like certain politicians and journalists just don't find that interesting...

(Swede here) So, about that movie (Midsommar) it basically is a caricature of a few of our cultural quirks. Pretty much everything it is "oh, so THAT is what they misunderstood!" (they get very little right, but they are close enough iin the core that you can trace what they (intentionally) misunderstood/turned to eleven). Imagine if MAD Magazine would try to describe 4th of July, and you get the gist of how it is.

Why the hell would he not mention that we have the most islands in the world? Allemansrätten would translate to all men's right. Amazing how "land of the free" doesn't even have something so basic... It's not silly, it's perhaps ironic. But his brother died before him and people thought it was him, so he saw the negative reaction due to inventing dynamite, so he created the Noble price. The fact that you see basic common sense stuff as utopian says a lot about your country. More Swedish and Nordic reactions please!

If you book a room at the ice hotel for a few nights, you also get a normal warm room as they don't want you to sleep more than one night in the cold. And l Iove our law about freedom to roam,. Swede here. Both good and bad things. But also more of what things you value. One thing many foreigner complain about (specially younger ones) our alcohol laws If you are unable to plan ahead few days ..or even few hours, Yes it may be a problem You can "only" buy stronger alcohol 12 hours per day, after those open hours you must go to a pub to get it. Personally I have never had problem with it, just buy and keep it at home when you are close to run out, buy more. always have a stock and refill it when need. Cold and darkness during winter is also something we complain about It is what it is, nothing anyone can change, so I dont really get the fuss about it. dress warm when go out. we have street lights and lightbulbs so it is not we wander around in complete darkness, sit in a dark room from Oct to April..as some make it sound like. Migrants and gang violence is an other hot topic. Yes crimes have gone up a lot during last 10 years but still very low compared to US and most other none EU countries. Majority of all violence happens between gangs, if come as tourist, you wont be a target not even normal regular swedes is involved, unless unlucky bystander. Taxes and things are expensive. As we do pay a lot in Tax, we dont have many bills that many other countries have, as we already paid for it by Tax. It may sounds it is free, but it is rather pre-paid. As everyone pay towards same goal, it work same as insurance but cost of have it is less. No one plan to have a heart attack, but we all know it can happen to anybody so everyone pay Tax that go to healthcare to those unlucky that needs it. No nobody ever think like Americans, if I pay but never get an heart attack..I must try to get my money worth ..by doing what ..stab yourself?!? People do have fire insurance, none lit their house on fire to get their money back?? Weird mind set . Almost everything about Sweden, is by 99% about Stockholm only. Yes as it is capital, things are more expensive, yes rents are higher, yes it is around 50 years que to get an apartment from government queuing system. other parts of Sweden do not have these problems. ( I live up north, big 3 room apartment for 300'ish US dollar per month) For being a capital, rents and cost of living is "low", compared to London, New York, Oslo, Tokyo It is like tourists make an guide for US and only talk about New York, after spent 1 week in Manhattan.

As a swede, it is difficult to answer if we have the dream here. Born and raised here and can't really compare it to other countries. So what I'm trying to say, it all depends on what you compare it to. At the core we are very lagom (also a bit reserved at first) and we have the "Law of Jante" steering us in the right way. It's a different way of living, but who can say it's "the right" one? :)

Just for the non-Scandinavians Allemansrätten functionally means "The Right to Roam", yes, but that isn't a literal translation. A literal translation would be: "The Everyman's Right/The Every Man's Right" Which is somewhat telling about our part of the world I think. It is every man-, or woman or what-have you's right to roam in nature. Not without consequences for bad behavior obviously, but the basic right of people to freely roam their surroundings and partake of nature's beauty and bounty shouldn't be denied to people. Maybe I'm just being patriotic and silly, but there's a certain profound fundamental respect for your fellow humans in that concept if you ask me.

One strange detail about Sweden's right to roam is that it is referenced in the constitution, but never defined anywhere! This is probably because by defining it, you must also limit it. As things stand, people are free to do things as they see appropriate: things that may be perfectly acceptable in one area might very well be unacceptable in other places. So it is best to not define the right to roam. Further, this right can be traced back through history to the viking age! Not bad of a bunch of people to come up with a right that is still valid almost a thousand years later! And to finish off: the English expression "the right to roam" is a bit misleading as a translation fo "allemansrätten". The Swedish legal tradition that is "Allemansrätten" also gives you the right to pick nuts and berries (unless forbidden by law), the right to camp, and the right to use fallen twigs/branches/trees as wood to make a fire. Very likely this has come about so that people could travel from one village to another, without having to carry several day's worth of food and water.

Why is it strange to have someone who invented dynamite establishing the Peace Prize? He didnt invent wars, to the contrary, he wanted the dynamite to be used for other important human developments issues. Where would our globa infrastructure today be if we wouldnt have had dynamite clearing the way for roads, railways, housing anf construction and so on and so forth. After living in so many countries for na big part of my life including childhood, teenager years, early adulthood and family life my comment was rather that each one of those countries had a far less community focus and much more self focus. The thoughts were seldom to your "neighbor" or the welbeing of around you. It was just more self-centered societies for good and bad. i also find it much more joyful in each of the countries to party and have fun. Its not bad in Sweden but it was often better in the other countries. I dont know you and could not possibly make assumptions about your party needs. It was merely a reflection about my own experience about the pros and cons. I met quite a lot of expat swedes living abroad and the majority were more self centered and partypeople and therefore did not appreciate the goody two shoes society here, something i now have learned to appreciate with a few more years under my belt. @@danieloskarsson215 you worded it bad in the first place then, the reason you met Swedes outside of Sweden who were closed off/self centred is because Swedes are antisocial, may i ask which countries you lived in? Im not sure where in Sweden you reside but there isnt a whole lot focus on communities here, people dont even want to sit next to a stranger on the bus.
@danieloskarsson215
@danieloskarsson215 4 месяца назад
@@NoSnakesAround the wording did admittingly leave it quite open for a different interpretation. And why I met Swedes is because expats in many countries tend to stick and socialize together. Swedes are sometimes socially less self-confident and feel awkward therefore tend to stick together, but so do most other groups. I've lived in Switzerland Zürich, St Gallen and on the country side at the bodensee, Austria in Linz and Vienna, German in Regensburg, Spain in San Sebastian, Malta in Sliema, France in Bordeaux, US in LA and upstate NY, Denmark in Odense and NL in Groningen. Some party places other far from it. Regardiing the community feeling I think I have another definition of it. Although people do not want to socialize extensively within a community the behavior and sentiments how they behave in society is more considerate towards the ones around you . We actually (according to studies) like to pay taxes if it helps others, we don't try to bother others, we don't try to trick everyone or have a saying like one of the countries had (you better fuck others otherwise you'll get fucked). You can lose your phone or leave your wallet in a bus and it rarely gets stolen, we have a modicum of trust in that the authorities have our best interest, we try not to bother our neighbors with trash or loud music. Of course its not black and white but its a stark difference in many other countries although you have bad apples everywhere to some degree.

"If you come in peace". That just shows you one of the ways the US has gone so wrong. Thinking about defending your property because someone walked through your woods is so far removed from the Swedish consciousness that it's not even a concept that would enter your mind. It's surreal.

I am still waiting to hear any English-speaking narrator pronounce Swedish names correctly. First of all - IKEA is pronounced "ee-ke-ah" and nothing else. Some research would really be advised before producing videos like this one.
