‘Stad I Ljus’ is a massive song in Sweden, and is usually played as the last song at student parties and sometimes nightclubs.

"Its weird seeing Sweden with rock" *EUROPE with the final countdown:* Am I a joke to you?
@QuickZ_
@QuickZ_ 2 года назад
Europe sure.. a song loved by the mainstream. But if you are in to the rock/metal genre you will see Sweden is absolutely stacked with successful bands! :). Ghost for example who is also popular among the mainstream and who have done the impossible to infiltrate the US charts... its just not representing an era as much as Europe does.... YET! Also when it comes to a bit more alternative music genres like for example death metal.. simply put Death Metal = Sweden

There's one thing that people often miss to mention when it comes to why Sweden won in 2015. Måns Zelmerlöw is ridiculously handsome and charming. He knows how to work the camera. He is the reason that he won. Combined with a good staging and and good song. maybe not the best song. But the artist that charmed the audience the most.

Same with Loreen in 2012 when more or less every other participating and competing artists and songs, including their staging, lights and production was really aweful. Then Loreen entered the stage in total darkness and one white spotlight focused on her... It was brilliant from the beginning. But then again, a head of lights designers is Swedish along with a majority of the lights and stage technicians, production and so on. :) And almost everyone of them works on the Melodifestivalen tours and productions.

@@swedishbloke I don't like it and I can't get over that's a song about the disadvantaged from a bully boy nation. This isn't as bad as it sounds as it was a very strong top seven but I think A Million Voices is the weakest song in that top seven at least and maybe even the top ten.

Fun fact: The woman next to Roger Pontare back in 1994, Marie Bergman, is the same singer who was the blond girl in the group Family Four, who competed in 1971 and 1972. Together with Carola, she's the only Swedish artist who has performed three times in the ESC. Great to watch this reaction! 👏👏👏👏👏 My favourites from each decade: 1959 - Brita Borg 1965 - Ingvar Wixell 1971 - Family Four 1988 - Tommy Körberg 1996 - One more time 2000 - Roger Pontare 2012 - Loreen 2020 - The Mamas

Lill-Babs (real name Barbro Svensson= who won 1961 was enormously popular in Sweden all her life (and loved by all, it more or less triggered national grief when she died two years ago). In 1963 she at one point had The Beatles as the opening act during a show (they even shyly asked her for her autograph). When the latter made their breakthrough and became world famous, Lill-Bab's first response was "What? Those little kids!"

I didn't even vote for him in Melodifestivalen that year, but Robin Bengtsson's "I can't go on" might just be my favorite Swedish performance from the 2010s... or it could just be that I was swayed by that criminally gorgeous dancer with the long hair. lol

"Your breasts are like swallows nesting" is basically a litteral translation of the swedish lyrics "Dina bröst är som svalor som häckar", and no, it makes no sense in swedish either. ;) Apparently the songwriter wrote the lyrics just an hour before the deadline for submissions for Melodifestivalen.

Sorry hello again, but I have more stories. My grandfather was Roger Pontares teacher at school. Roger saw my grandpa at the store when he visited my hometown and ran after him like a fan instead, ignoring all the people running around him. Why he did was was just because my granfather was known as a very good and nice teacher and all the students loved him and remembered him. Ive met many of his former students who all say the same. I guess also because my grandfather didnt act like he was a celebrity when they spoke, and he didnt know how to pronounce his stage name. Pontaaaare Edit: Roger is from the north, lappland where the native saamis livew. I dont know if he has saami blood though. Just thought id mention it since his song "when spirits are callng my name" can be confusing to those who dont knwo that sweden also have natives that are in many ways very similar to the native americans. I know of at least two sami jojk singers who actually do soundtracks for american documentaries about their native americans, Sofia Jannok is one of them for example.

I love the interplay between you two. You have some really good points when discussing about the songs, and I like the commentary for some of them (The one for Take Me to Your Heaven was particularly passionate, from Matt's POV. I wouldn't say it was the greatest winner ever, but it's understandable in the context of 1999). I love how Roy really likes Den Vilda--that's my favorite Swedish entry ever! I'm not sure if it's my favorite from 1996 or the Voice; both are very ethereal and have amazing lyrics. If you do another one, can I suggest France, Greece, or Yugoslavia? It would be interesting!

FUN FACT 1: about Christer Björkman: Since 2002, he has been a producer of Melodifestivalen, and remained an important figure in Melodifestivalen and the Eurovision Song Contest where he has acted as the "Schlager President". He will step down from his position after the current Melodifestivalen 2021, which is not on tour due to Covid-19 and is held at Annexet, a roughly 3500 capacity venue in the Globen Arena. Some that are still played a lot in Sweden are Främling 1983, Stad i Ljus 1988, Eloise 1993 and of course Euphoria 2012. The auto tune criticism false flat on its own as every single song from a studio is auto tuned one way or another, even stage performances are auto tuned while they perform. If you mean that he sounds a bit robotic, unintentionally, at times during the song in the studio version then that is a better criticism as that can be highly distracting and just flat out sound amateurish. But don't use auto tune itself as criticism because then you are just criticizing nearly every album and artist since the 90's.

It pains me hearing every hard core ESC-fan on RU-vid loving "Invincible", I really dislike that one, and "Hero" with Charlotte Perelli. I generally dislike everything Carola has done after the early 1990's, and Charlotte has one good song on her resume in my opinion (Take me to your heaven)

Invisible has grown on me like pretty much all Carola's songs. I hate Schlarger Charlie though - hated her winning song and hate Hero - I wish she'd go away. Hero should have been Sweden's sole NQ not the following year's effort - effing juries put that tripe in the final..booooo!!!

I usually don’t mind what Sweden send to ESC even if they aren’t always the best in my opinion, but there is three I just loathe. Anna Bergendhal was just bad, Robin Stjenberg didn’t win melodifestivalen his year, but Bjökman desided to let a internatinal jury chose instead of the swedish voters and sent that instead and then we have Benjamin Wahlgren or ”Ingrosso” who plagirised his song, cheated (but wasn’t disqulifed for some reason) and then talked shit about the other contries songs in an interview in ESC.

It's funny he does come across as a bit full of himself and I guess that confirms that impression may have some weight to it.
