Swedien is an AMAZING engineer - and what a resume! He has worked with everyone from Duke Ellington and Count Basie to Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. As an engineer, I've learned so much, and have been so influenced by him over the years, ( 35 years now) by listening to his work and others like him ( Parsons, Nichols, Dowd, Emerick, etc.,). I've never met Bruce, so he would have no way of knowing just how much he has taught me, and I'm sure he has influenced hundreds of other engineers he has never met, too. For certain, Bruce is one of those cookers who has "golden ears". And it's not JUST the gorgeous tones that he dials in, but is also the placement of the tracks - the depth, the space - and the respect for the dynamics and the music; to mix to what the song is calling out for. If it's not being done already, Bruce Swedien's work should be required listening and study by students at audio engineering schools.
My favourite comment by Mr. Swedien (attributed to Bill Putnam): "before you get your mix, choose the mics or anything.... go out and listen to the band."
I hope her album "When The Night Calls" will come soon... She is a great songwriter. I have heard a couple of her jazz songs and I need a record from her :). Thanks for producing "The Moon and I" Nigel :)
"The Moon & I" by Lisa Greene. She's a songwriter who is about to release her debut solo album (a jazzy album). She has written a lot for Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue and more :). She's going to show another part of her :)
That 4032 gives me so much memories of my time when I was a second engineer at Starlight Sound in Richmond, CA...( Ohhh yes, 617 S. 13th st), The MCI, the Ampex, giving out the free beer on the overnight sessions... So much memories. Then again, what was the analouge gear of the MJ recordings?
