Paul, you are wrong on one point, "greatest tenor of all time according to Swedes"? No, there are many, many more people from other countries than from Sweden who believe that he was the greatest. Just read under Björling's opera arias here on YT. First, he was considered the leading tenor during a period called "the golden era of tenors" from the 1930s to the 1960s. It was during that period that the vast majority of the greatest tenors were active. Secondly, during the 90s and early 2000s, numerous polls were held among opera audiences and opera critics around the world about who was the greatest tenor of all time. Björling was voted No. 1 in most of these. This despite the fact that he had been dead for 30-40 years and "the Three tenors" Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras were at their peak at the same time. Listen to what the narrator at the beginning says here about this in an English TV series called "the original three tenors" which is about Caruso, Gigli and Björling.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z-d3vX3gpCk.html This was done as a counterweight to "the three tenors to show who were the principal tenors. My post does not intend to prove that Björling was the greatest, but I just want to point out that it was not at all only Swedes who claimed that he was the greatest.

Jussi Björling recorded this track 1960. The day after was his last day in this life. Only 49 years of age. Pavarotti regarded Jussi as the greatest tenor. He would listen to Jussi’s recordings, if there was one, before he sang the same song. Merry Christmas or God Jul✨

Jussi made this recording on February 8 , 1959. Please note, apart from Jussi's singing, the exceptional orchestra arrangement of the accompanying Stockholm Opera Orchestra. Sadly , Jussi passed away a little more than one and a half year later , on September 9 , 1960

We play it every Christmas. I am 68 years old. Learning from my father about Jussi. A professional said that Caruso was gold and Jussi was silver. You dont hear Caruso noe adays either.

Jussi was in any case Pavarotti's role model and the one he aspired to be as good as. So if Pavarotti is the best, maybe it's because of Jussi?

Pavarotti was good yes but not even near Jussi Björlings ability to wander between notes without loosing their breath.

Jussi and Pavarotti are the two greatest tenors of all time , totally outstanding. It is truly impossible to distinguish who is the greatest. Due to his alcoholism, Jussi sometimes had bad days, which Pavarotti never had. Jussi on the other hand, at his very best and most sublime, was hard to beat. Seasons Greetings from Uppsala, Sweden
