It was because after world war 2 and the korean war, the sweeds looked at all the data on where destroyed tanks were most often hit and they saw the trend that the turret was the kill shot for the majority of tanks. They goal was not to build a super fast powerful tank, their goal was to design a light tank with the highest survivability possible. They figured it was better to have a few hundred tanks that were hard to kill and could maneuver around the mountains, then to have a thousand heavy tanks that could be killed and would have difficulty in the mountains. They were not the only country to realize the turret was the weakspot but they were the only ones to design a turret-less tank, the french came to the same conclusion but decided having a reciprocating turret was the best choice.
