So I needed to source some ammo for my Mas 49/56 as it is as of the writing of this description "unobtainium". I had a bunch of S&B 6.5x55 laying around so I took the old M96 to the range to make some brass available for converting to the 7.5x54 French round. In the next few weeks I will be developing a round that works and cycles the Mas. If any of you have done this already any input and advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am recently acquiring a 1906 m96 swedish mauser I'm curious if you've used a veriety of 6.5 x 55 Swede cartridge and which ones would be more suitable for hunting. Beautiful rifle I'll be waiting on mine. Cheers

Congrats! PPU is the only cartridge I have personally used in it but it is plenty accurate in these as the barrels are all very nice. I believe it’s FMJ so you may want something in a soft point for hunting. It’s a low recoil flat shooting round and should be perfect for hunting, good luck! 👍

"Carl Gustaf" is actually the name of the armory with the full name "Carl Gustafs stads Gevärsfaktori". It is the "rifle factory of CG' city" The name refers to the city Eskilstuna and the 17'th century king, Karl X Gustaf (modern spelling), who promoted the city to become a centre for early industrial production. The name "Eskilstuna" is even a quality stamp in itself, often found on old tools and mechanical instruments. The Swedish mauser rifles were also produced by Husquarna, another armory that dates back to the 17'th century, and of course, Mauser who made the first production run of these rifles.

0:43 Carl-Gustaf was not an individual! 😀 Carl-Gustaf is the name of the weapons factory where these rifles was manufactured. (Carl-Gustaf stads gevärsfaktori, in the town of Eskilstuna) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Gustafs_stads_gev%C3%A4rsfaktori

In 1995 I competed with one of these built in1896. I used a Lyman #48 rear sight with a Lyman #17a front sight in NRA Highpower competition at 1000yds at a National Gard base. The rifle did very well with 140gr Sierra MKs , held 10 to 12 inches. It had been re-barreled in 1965 with an H&R barrel by the armory before it was imported to the U.S.

I bought one in 1980's for shooting Coyotes. Was excellent to 500 yds with a 4x scope. The rifle always shot far better than I did. Still have and am now thinking about a "range day."
