jayne wisener (johanna) was a trained singer when she took part in sweeney todd and i think jamie (anthony) was too. i think they cut kiss me bc the song was pretty quick for a movie adaptation
yeah, but (i) the movie's focus is more fixed on Todd and Mrs Lovett and most of Johanna's part is cut, (ii) many songs were cut because they were too "musical theatre" and didn't fit the tone they were going for with the film
this is my favorite johanna - she gives the character such personality! she pushes the fast lines and plays up her paranoia like a true barker. i feel like johanna is an easy character to make just a bird in a cage, but this johanna is so active!
this is my FAVOURITE adaptation of this song, ever. so so glad someone posted this so i can finally watch this over and over again without skipping through the full show just for this scene.
1:13 "Ah, miss, marry me marry me, miss, marry me Monday, favor me, favor me with your -- ...glance?" My favorite part lol Also ofc 5:25 when they kiss. But more because I feel like Beadle and Judge aren't grinning in character, but because the number is so damn great and they all did it fantastically. And that walk around the piano is just - so clever and cool.
Little update, we perform for opening night tomorrow. I have everything and this is my favorite part of the play. Can’t wait to hold that note forever until Antony and Johanna finish their parts. 😅
@@dorotabenesova5212 It went great! This song was definitely my favorite part of the play. Trouble is, Anthony and Johanna had a bit of trouble with this song the first couple performances, but they brought it together and made it amazing by the end of it.
Agreed. Of all the great songs in this musical, this is the one that I revisit the most. In theory, a section where four people are singing different words should be a mess, but it works incredibly here.
i saw a performance of this in rhode island and the girl who played the beadle was so freaking funny. she had this hilarious look of disgust on her face as soon as judge turpin said he was going to marry his daughter, and then quickly shook the look away to be like "oh what an amazing plan you have 😍 (but secretly 🤮)"

In the book Anthony actually ends up imprisoned by Mrs. Lovett's, and the whole story evolves around a string of pearls he tried to give her as his dying wish.
The reason it comes off as creepy is that most Anthony’s don’t characterize him properly. He is supposed to be eager and energetic, not the romantic brooding character many portray him as. He is the most innocent character in the whole show, as Tobias is corrupted and Johanna straight up kills a man when Anthony can’t bring himself to do it himself. This show did him better justice than many others did, but still feels off.
Yeah no. He’s still creepy. It seems romantic because it’s a fantasy and they’re singling. But he’s coming on way to fast and strong. In real life he would have had her head in a box by the end of act 1.
