Swift parrots are one of Australia’s most charismatic birds, but also one of its most endangered. Each year every swift parrot in the nation flies south to Tasmania to breed. Logging and land-clearing have decimated their habitat but conservation biologist, Dejan Stojanovic, also made the startling discovery of why the parrot numbers were plummeting so rapidly - a very unlikely predator - the deceptively sweet sugar glider was eating them.
In a race against time, Dejan and his team raised thousands of dollars through social media to save the parrot. Reporter, Mark Horstman, returns to Bruny Island in Tasmania to witness their remarkable recovery.

Thank you boys for caring, and in the best way. You noticed a problem, you made your best diagnosis with the facts you had, then you physically ran the ground game. You raised the awareness, you funded it with many small donors, which gets many more people with equity in a success, then you built and installed the boxes. That is a text book demonstration on how to be successful. Congratulations. Now you could scale up if you need to. You have all the data and a success story to use as a roadmap should you seek bigger donors, and hire more people and ramp it up, if need be. As an American, I admire you. But the Swift Parrots, they owe you a debt of gratitude. You probably headed off an extinction. That’s immeasurable. Thank you. I pray God blesses you.

Thank you so much for your care & compassion but also the efforts for these, but all birds & etc. Sadly, in Western Australia 'we' cut down trees in incredible numbers, daily, alongside old Jarrah Forest clearing. Councils & etc. cannot abide any 'old' trees with hollows for our parrots, cockatoos & galahs & ANY bird or Possum. We are so stupid. Bees are dying out also.

@@ambriadanielsband4132Sugar gliders are just like flying squirrels that savage my cage bird nest outside, where we keep them. Being nocturnal they eat some meat. Not being out during daylight and getting sunlight for vitamin D they seek protien too get it.

Fabulous success story saving thee little lovely parakeets. I would recommend starting a captive breeding program as a back up. Where a lot of people disagree with captive breeding I believe it is a major tool to be put to work to ensure there is a back up population. The Homo spaiens population is ever growing with their selfish demand for natural resources and consumption. Captive breeding programs will be the last hope. I live in the southeastern US and have mounted up 20 various species nest boxes and similar to the chain saw method I did some smaller dead limbs on table saw. If only there were more people like you Aussies had the passion for wildlife conservation.

They are NOT parakeets, as that's your word, but PARROTS, okay, as in the title? When in Rome... And yes, there are breeding programs conducted by various agencies for them, but ultimately we have to stop the timber industry's merciless chopping down of old growth trees needed by so many species and ensure they have different varieties of gum flowers blossoming every year for them. So, Who was the bright spark that introduced these Sugar Gliders? Same thinking as to why we have A Fox/ Rabbit/Cats/Starlings/Swallows/Mice/Rats/Cane Toads and that is only the tip of the Iceberg. 60 Thousand years ago the first People came to this land, they came here when it was really cold as sea levels were low. They walked to what we now call Tasmania. The Sea level rose and then 20,000 years later the next people arrived here with a dog, called a Dingo and that dog wiped out all of the TASSIE Tigers that used to roam all up the East Coast, Thylacine. Link en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thylacine Just some food for thought people, do your own homework if you are interested. John, Australia.

Did they always do nest hole to a living trees or just with dead trees? Because I'm thinking to release some parrot species in my town to spread cypress & juniper trees by them naturally. I'm afraid it destroy trees!
