We have had many inquiries about how we built the vertical wall that allows us to have 6' of water against our house, so here it is ;) SWIM POND HOW-TO! An in-depth, STEP-BY-STEP, HOW-WE-DID-IT! Now mind you, all situations are different and you should definitely consult structural engineers before attempting such a thing BUT this is my house and I like to practice at home! It is a definitive guide to our methods (which came from many past projects) and how we applied our skills to build one of the coolest parts of THE OASIS AT MODERN DESIGN! This recreational water feature is so sweet ;)
Let us know what you think POST COMMENTS QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS in the comments below! DO YOU THINK IT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME?
Happy Pondering ;-)

Out of all the videos from all the different companies, or people that build these natural pools, I HAVE NEVER SEEN AN IDEA AS UNIQUE, OR COOL AS THIS. A SWIM POND RIGHT UP AGAINST THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE...WOW.

@@KoiAddiction well I already do have a small pond (1000 gal) which I built totally myself. Was rough as I’m 73 years old and did everything by hand. I don’t have big boulders obviously. Sort of why I have pond envy LOL. I did use Aquascape products , they are the best. Everyone starts small then wants bigger. Again hence the envy. I’ve learned a ton over the year and finally have the perfect eco system. My Koi surprised me by giving me 3 babies. I DIDN’T even know I had a female. In a month and a half they have grown to 5 inches which is bigger than they say they should be. Anyway it’s so awesome living the Aquascape lifestyle. Big or small.

Does it look amazing, yes. Do I wonder about the integrity of that foundation long term, also a yes. What’s done is done but I’ve spent time around basement and crawl space waterproofing guys and water can find it’s way into basements with simple grading problems due to rain let alone a standing column of water 6-8’ deep. I’d personally have cut the pond in about 36” from the home and done some flat stone and overhanging plants along the home which would make it appear it’s up against the home.

That would make a lot more sense than this. Unnecessary risk here
@igloo2862
@igloo2862 8 месяцев назад
It’s gorgeous and I hope it never leaks, but there are so many little things that could go wrong, this seems like a disaster waiting to happen if done multiple times. All it takes is a small gap and tiny tear in the lining for water to be constantly touching the foundation

@@KoiAddiction i just made a video on edging it seems to be a topic and task a lot of people just don't have a full grasp on. especially when thinking out side the box and making wet areas outside what is perceived as the edge of the pond this might be a great video for you . that and building the negative edge if you haven't already

John G for genius, amazing project, attention to detail and finished beautifully, well done to you and the crew. I like that even though no one knows the detail under that water, but you went to all that effort, for an area that won't be seen. That says more about you as a person and that all aspects of a job must be done right. I would be confident having John G and the crew on site.

Hi John. How are you, Sir? This is a very interesting video. I personally like that you took your time constructing that wall for the very reasons you mentioned, however the careful planning and preparation before you started shows that you are the Rec Pond Pro, which is important because to do a job like that it cannot have any flaws otherwise it would be catastrophic. Anyway, I would like to say Once again that I am happy for you and your Family that you have a beautiful Pond you can all enjoy. By the way, I like the flagstone. I like how it overhangs like a wave along the top of that little wall at the bottom. Your A.T.D. is number One. 👍🏼 Out of appreciation to you for taking the time to produce this content, I have given your video the 112th 👍🏼 to say thankyou very much for sharing. Take care, Sir.

Wow. Amazing work. So much ingenuity here. Do you seal the concrete parts of this pond? Other than the esthetic, any cons to make a form with rebars and pour concrete to make a solid vertical wall with slate stone veneers added on it instead of using the expensive stone slabs, building the braces, foam the back, etc? Also, what are the advantages of using fiberglass rebars over the steel rebars?
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 10 месяцев назад
Fiberglass rebar for underwater (and in case I ever want to salt the system). I dont seal the concrete, it doessnt need to be waterproof, per say…Never thought of it being necessary, I always heard that concrete will harden underwater anyways. You could have made the solid wall all the way up the house but it would have been much thicker- like 8” versus the 3” that I had most of the way up. We don’t have very aggressive winters here either which probably comes into play for some areas of the world.
@rowgler1
@rowgler1 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for this, the slow thought full details of solving a wet puzzle. Theres a lot of pressure and material compatability to consider if it's going to last. Good that you used fiberglass rebar, I don't know where to get it yet. Acrylic additives in portland cement based mixtures make a long term difference also, especially where freezing is a consideration. The project came out great, I hope you will make a relaxed conclusion video of it all with long views for perspective. Do you consider it 'done', or are you still tweaking the dream?
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 11 месяцев назад
Still tweaking it for sure. There are “unfinished” details here and there. Small corners-lighting issues-irrigation-landscaping-etc. Not sure I will ever be done LOL! The joy is the journey! Thanks for spending time with us ;)

Was the extra flag stone panels more of a esthetics or was it required by the engineer to aid in the pressures of the pond?

Just for looks. The house foundation was sufficient to hold back the pressure of the water (so far LOL)!

Great work !! Did you consider replacing the concrete wall with a glass window to be able to see the fish from inside your house ? Keep up the great content!
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 10 месяцев назад
Yes, definitely did. If I would’ve designed my house with a Ponds in mind, it would’ve been a thing, but it was so much work to make that happen later and not weaken the existing foundation that just didn’t make sense. Next time!
@CollectiveConsciousness1111
@CollectiveConsciousness1111 10 месяцев назад
Looks amazing! My fear is if there is a leak in liner then how do you replace the liner due to the solid wall? Thanks for sharing your skills 👍
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 10 месяцев назад
I guess that could be a thing. There is a rock pad sandwich on either side of the liner. It has concrete on one side of it and stone on the other side. It is completely protected from ultraviolet. There is no way to poke a hole in it. I’m not sure how it could ever get a hole? I guess anything is possible but at this point I feel like we’re pretty solid… I would think if there was a problem, I would’ve known it right off the bat, but we were so careful… time will tell
@rockwelaj
@rockwelaj 6 месяцев назад
So, i was hoping to see you waterproof your form being that cement is water permeable and the wood will eventually rot possibly causing an air pocket then a collapse. Or....I've been drinking too much wine and made it all up. Who knows🤷🏾‍♀️
