Swimming Big Falls (Canyon Run, South Fork Payette, 1400cfs)
"Started off the day with a big breakfast and a traumatic swim on the only portage on the South Fork of the Payette. I came into the drop with not quite enough speed, pulled a boof stroke that brought my bow up too high, too late, landing on my edge directly into a window shade. Proceeded to fight in the hole, slowly working myself into a pocket towards river center, dropping carp after carp, My leg came loose in my thigh grip and I was certain I wasn't getting the roll anyway and pulled skirt. My safety crew up top missed their bag and I swam over the second drop getting somewhat substantial down time. I surfaced in a boil on river left where Michael Bone hit me with a dime of a bag. This got me to the lip of the last drop where I appeared to the safety team and spectators to be secure. I fell off of the last drop into another mean hole where I went quite deep. I surfaced in an eddy on river right formed by a crack just within reach of the last hole's pull.
Here, I was hit dead on with two bags from Nate Gourley, one of which, I completely failed to notice. Nate, Song Candea, and Nicky Gallo held my rope up for what felt like several minutes so I could keep my head up in the aerated water until I could think somewhat. Jake Liechty, Filip Dobrek, and Connor Gagliano had prepared a two rope system on river left for rescue out of the bottom hole and after I had caught my breath somewhat, they threw me the rope and pulled me across.
Due to the noise of the rapid, another unnamed safety team member failed to pull slack out of the second rope, causing me to be pushed into an under cut just downstream of the eddy I had been in. With Connors pulling, I was able to duck through the undercut and be dragged to safety to be met with hugs, nicotine, and new pair of underwear. As mentioned in the disclaimer at the end, many people in the video were not there to set safety nor did they have the qualifications to participate in the rescue. Every member of the 11 person safety team performed admirably and I am proud to know them."

Bit unlucky to slide off the edge of the boof line, your boof stroke was flawless otherwise. Pity about the disclaimer at the end, I was about to rant about the crowd of autists staring as you struggled. Glad you were ok, good crew.

Maybe some of them were beginner class IV kayakers, but they were bad beginners. They should know at that time, that additional safety is always a good idea even if it is not your group. Shitshow of bad throws and missing good spots to throw that rope. I'm glad you are good. I would reconsider who I paddle with since spots looked like bad choices.

Gotta ask...or mention... it looked like there were a bunch of paddlers just watching him (when the "???" popped up on the screen) get worked... even to the point when he was on that "ledge" temporary out of danger for a good 10-15 seconds, but no bags were anywhere in the screen or in the vicinity of him? Was that just bad camera footage? or what was that about? eventually he lost his grip and slid back into the gauntlet... It looked like he could have been rescued in that 10-15 second window.... but maybe it was impossible to get any rope down there?

Hello. I was the kayaker here. I definitely could have gotten a rope here. Definitely wish I had. There were a couple reasons that led to this not being the case. Firstly, most of our safety was designated at the top and bottom of the rapid. It seemed before the swim, that that point I was stuck on would be an incredibly unlikely place to end up. Next time around, if I’m setting safety, I’ll be sure to have someone else or myself on live bait at that exact point. The group standing on that ledge was not part of the safety crew. Many were commercial rafting customers who stopped by to watch. Several were beginner kayakers who were friends of mine but not asked to participate. One person was on their way up to run it and didn’t have a rope. 2 people who had just thrown their bags up top -‘s were running down to see how they could help. The one person who really could have saw the same things you did, reasonably assumed that the group of people standing there had it under control and went after my gear. It was a bad situation in an unlikely spot. I believe it also looked like I was in a secure position where I could self rescue. Definitely a problem I’ll fix if I ever run it again or set safety there. Thanks for reading!

The disclaimer is nice buttt, having rafted big falls commercially n needing to raft my Sabertooth on this run, I don’t understand not having safety below each drop?? Just truly trying to understand. I know there’s a good chance I could die when I run this so for sure having safety, even paying kayakers to run safety below each fall including testing rope throwing skills. That was close bro. I think the last drop / swim totally avoidable cuz you were on the rocks. Someone needed hands on you but there was no one there???
@isaacchrisman1345
@isaacchrisman1345 9 месяцев назад
I’m sorry what commercial rafting company takes people down big falls? That’s a pretty difficult zone to be in and safely pull a swimmer in. Very slippery with no anchor points for a live bait. Also please do not be dumb enough to raft this rapid anywhere near this flow.
@waltermitty1971
@waltermitty1971 3 месяца назад
@@isaacchrisman1345 that is not an accurate sentence regarding rafting "big falls" commercially. No one runs that rapid commercially. I think I was trying to say having rafted that run (SF) commercially and maybe just spoke or otherwise fckd up that sentence. But, Im still planning on running Big Falls in my Sabertooth. Obviously, lots more meta regarding flows and, of course, a shit-ton of safety (there appears to be a spot where he's hanging on initially on river left that someone could have just grabbed him. Lots of safety though

That's bogus dude. The first rule of rescue is don't turn yourself into another victim needing to be rescued and this swimmer was in no position to be rescued until he WAS rescued. He said himself that 4 ropes went his way during the swim. Everybody can't be Dane Jackson pal.
@isaacchrisman1345
@isaacchrisman1345 9 месяцев назад
@@paulherring8959 lol if you watch the video carefully enough, two ropes are thrown to me up top as well. They just didn’t meet their mark. I appreciate the defense of those guys. They really are a solid crew. With so many randos in the video, it’s less easy to see their actions shine. I would certainly be dead without them.

@@isaacchrisman1345 Ultimately they got you out, which is a success. Rescues are almost never going to be 100% textbook with perfect throws every time. It's an incredibly stressful situation doing a rescue like this, and while it's not optimal, missing throws is just going to happen. That's why you have redundancy in setting safety. So, I don't think the original statement here stands of "reassessing who you kayak with." Ultimately, they succeeded in the rescue, and you seem to come out uninjured, which is ultimately what counts. Could it have gone better? Sure, but I don't see any critical mistakes here other than the "beginner class IV" boaters not jumping in to help during the window of you on the rocks. Your SWR should already be up to snuff before you're running class IV, and that means stepping in when appropriate, even if you aren't part of the active safety.
