thats what i thought about this song first. and i hate "party"songs, like about drinking, smoking weed and getting grils, so i never listened to this song again, but my friend told me to listen to him more, so i gave him another chance, i listened to this song, and actually LISTENED to the lyrics, and now i like this song.
i hate anime Nah the government had nothing to do with it. Alcohol was made through chance by nature. I used to drink to just quiet all the excess thoughts in my head and assume a lot of people are similar.
I thought at first when I first listened to this, I thought it was like a fun sort of party song, but than going deeper into the lyrics, you realize it’s actually about the portrayal of alcoholism which is a great problem in society and with many people.
It can be either depending on your outlook. Some people can drink in moderation without it becoming a problem and some can't. I've been drinking for 16 of my 27 years along with experimenting with pretty much everything you can imgine at different points in between and none of it ever has been a problem for me.
This is one of the first Kendrick songs I listened to and to this day it’s my favorite because I relate to it a lot especially when he mentions how people in his family were hard drinkers. Alcoholism runs rampant on both sides of my family and my dad recently recovered from his alcoholism a couple years ago. Him rapping about the different reasons why people start drinking always makes me question why I’ve started drinking. It’s a great song with such a universal appeal to all people. Whether your an African American from Compton like Kendrick or from a white family of rough miners like me everyone turns to this destructive but accepted drug for different reasons and this song brings a lot of awareness to that. And then people act like weed is such a horrible drug even though it’s about the same as alcohol if not better depending on the individual but that’s a whole different discussion.
@@benemery1644 16 out of 27 years. Drinking since 11 is starting pretty young. Don't get me wrong I'm not judging, when we would host drinking and smoking party some of the friends/relatives would be young but never under 16 if I remember correctly. Anyway not really making a point... have fun kiddo!
+MVR Underground. all the twerkin girls didn't twerk to the whole song :/ I never even heard the part besides the po-up part lol first time really hearing this song.
@@kyriapowell5993 bro its almost like it just has a catchy ass tune and people like catchy ass tunes when drunk. It literally do not matter what the lyrics mean when youre partying. Man its no wonder why people like yall dont get it, never been invited out.
Jocelyn Tweit i think that you misinterpreted this song. on the surface, yes, its a fun drinking anthem. pay attention to the conscience part. also, in the beginning, kendrick says that he drinks because of peer pressure/he wants to look cool
On the part "First you get a swimming pool full of liquor, then you diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-ve in it" notice how it says "then you dieeeeeeeeeeee-ve".
It's sarcasm. Like, "So, you wanna be popular? You wanna escape? Dive into this pool of alcohol, I'm sure it'll make things 10x better." But really, it doesn't. It's just about peer pressure and voices in your head telling you to drink because it'll make you popular or it'll make you feel better. Or at least that's how I perceive it.
I made that comment because I noticed a fuckload of people actually don't seem to grasp what the song's about. It isn't directed at people who already understand it.
I always thought that the voice in the chorus is drunk himself, and when he's saying 'I wave a few bottles and watch 'em all flock' or 'Pool full of liquor and you dive in it', he's deluded into thinking that drinking will make him successful and popular, when in fact the opposite occurs.
I feel like that fits the message of the song well. Drinking in excess to the point of losing yourself in a haze. As if drowning in a pool of alcohol..ya knw
+Ruinn Entree I'm white and have always disagreed with people saying ' African-American " I bet white people decided thats the politically correct term. I identify people by skin color...
Did anyone else who listened to this with headphones notice how the verse starting at 1:31 goes in between the headphones creating this illusion of someone circling you while they talk at you?
I love the subliminal message he's giving. Drinking to fit in or cuz that's just what is expected or the norm, but I feel deep down he hates it, and can't escape what he started. Deep feels bro...... either be lonely what you love doing or do what you don't like and fit in.....
Staximus H2 That’s some bullshit lol I rarely drink but I still go out and have a good ass time just being me, they just use me as a DD and I’m perfectly fine with getting my friends home safe/alive 🤷🏽♂️
@@nick3718 bro shut up and find a fucking hobby.. jesus, nobody gives a fuck, I'll listen to it while blacking out from too much vodka if I fucking want.. Btw I truly respect the lyrics, it's a great message, but bro, he's not saying "sToP dRiNkInG" he's saying that alcohol is not good for you, das all, now let people do what they wanna do
@@prodICYN well it would be pretty ironic to black out to a song about the dangers and peer pressure of drinking alcohol...but hey, I'm not gonna tell you how to live your life. Personally, I just feel like that kind of mindset is damaging for the mind and body in the long-term
+Anthony king baby Lol y u blacks think a joke is Racist? You're the racists here not me or him. End of the godamn discussion! Btw I'm Mixed for your Godamn info.
"okay, now open your mind up and listen to me Kendrick. I am your conscience and if you can not hear me you will be history Kendrick. I know you nauseous right now but I'm here to lead you to victory Kendrick." Best part!
I'm not a huge connoisseur of rap admittedly, but this song is a masterpiece. Even I can attest to how catchy it is and it has such a good message. Needs to be more rap songs like this one.
Aimée Laurent There’s a lot of rap songs with very important and impactful messages. Unfortunately the genre gets judged pretty harsh so many people don’t give it a chance. Give this a listen if you’re interested in what lies beyond the stereotypes. This song saves lives. Hope you enjoy! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cycUHgg0zzU.html
I love about the meaning of the song, it is not about he loves drinking but it is about his life story of being surrounded by people drinking all the time and he hated that, it has a sad meaning
One thing I’ve noticed and like about Kendrick Lamar is, unlike most other rappers, he’s very soft-spoken. He never really gets loud in his songs. I think this adds a lot to the surreal feeling of a lot of his music.
I remember when a homie of mine told me to check out "Swimming Pools". When I did I thought it was good, but since I didn't read the lyrics, I figured it was just another artist making a dope beat and getting some fame for it. Wasn't until way later that I realized how deep the lyrics and album go. Kendrick is a master lyricist and incredible storyteller. Whenever someone tells me Hip-Hop/Rap is dead...nah. We doing alright
Vulire lol lil nigga kendrick is wack now... To me, kendrick goes through stages... At first he was a savage Compton rapper but then he was a good rapper like in this song, now he doing shit like humble... It's like he runs out of ideas so he switches genres
Damn, most of the time it's songs glorifying liquor, now there's one that actually states the problems with it... and it's ironically really easy to drink to.
This song speaks to me. It is about society and all its problems, and a clear escape. Sure alcohol is an escape. Those alcohol anonymous nuts say stop drinking. I say drink more, drink more until society becomes less insane. Because it is clearly insane right now...
Jet1337 HEY HEY HEY PEOPLE! It is ONE thing to state an opinion, But it is another thing to be rude about it. Trust me kid. People might find you one day, And they won't be so happy. Shit rolls downhill Sir and in this case, you won't be so happy when It does.
It's funny how people didn't really catch the lryics... as a former alcoholic this hit home back then because I was going through it when this came out
Since no one is saying this. *Anybody remember this in GTA 5?* Edit: Thanks for the likes guys. I've never gotten this much likes. Appreciate the support
@@stungun0 I am not "comparing" idiot. Learn how to read first. Kendrick Lamar is their inspiration. Especially RM's. And they are not bad lyricists. I'm just saying that the lyrics of the other song is also great. And I think I should thank them for introducing me some good old school rap songs.
If I take another one down I think imma drown in some poison Abusin’ my limit I think that I’m feelin’ a vibe I see the love in her eyes I see the feelin’ of freedom is granted as soon as the damage of Vodka Arrive
Dont care great drinking song. Kendrick is a bitch boy my opinion. Im an alcoholic and this shit is on point. But alcohol poisoning doesnt exist for me. Been drinking liquor heavy for about 8 years. Nothing to brag about. But then again I used to carry a half gallon of bourbon with me when I was 20. 26 now. Probably could show this punk something. I can put a 5th of bourbon down by myself with no chaser and not pass out. Bout 7 or 8 hours. Straight from the bottle fuck a shot. Give me a pool
one time ii swam in a poopl but drowned because i forget my spongebob floaty and then the life guard lady safed me and then she kissed me and then then touched me innporp[ritely
I'll break it down for people that don't know: "Sit down (drank) Stand up (drank) Pass out (drank) Wake up (drank)" This verse describes alcohol dependency "Graddady had the golden flask" This says about all the alcohol addiction in his family. "Nigga why you baby sittin on 2 or 3 shots, Imma show you how to turn it up a notch You get a swimming pool full of liquor and you dive in it, pool full of liquor and you dive in it" You're becoming alcohol dependent. You see, you're trying to float above the liquid in the pool which in this case is alcohol. "I wave a few bottles and watch em all flock" All the addicts. "I got a swimming pool full of liquor and they dive in it" Peer pressure. "Pool full of liquor Imma dive in it" Being peer pressured by others into alco. "Ok now open your mind up an listen to me Kendrick" Peeeeeeer preeeeesure. (This whole verse is about peer pressure.)
you re reachin. kendrick nice in a trash generation. he is nowhere near a classic mc, let alone a legendary mc, let alone a lyrical god. you reachin son
@@slinkbradshaw8674 dude is nice, but lyrical genius? someone like canibus is a lyrical genius. kendrick is nice but no genius. you kids have never heard of someone like canibus. ever heard of mos def? also a lyrical genius. kendrick is nice but cant come close to these titans.
Kendrick imo is better than Tupac ever was, obviously Pac is a legend, and he will always be the King of Hip Hop but Kendrick infuses deep lyricism and social problems while disguising it all over banger and club beats in a way that Pac never could...
I love how the loud clap whenever he says drank wit headphones on simulates the throbbing of a headache after drinking too much. Really cool way of telling more of a story with the beat
