I was just telling my friend, who has never seen this movie, that you haven't lived until you see Robert Sean Leonard atonally choke out "Doo wap doo wap doo wap".
It’s the go to movie for History teachers when they want to show the rise of Nazi Germany and how it impacted the freedoms of its own people and brainwashed many young men like these swing kids to be their eyes and ears among the common people so they could uphold their order, or, in Peter’s case, silence them completely.
It's a "go to" movie for kids to understand how easy it is to get swept up off your feet by what a large group of people tell you to do/feel/act. It's sometimes not enough to be told or be warned about when it comes to these kinds of lessons. We have to be able to relate to it. If we cannot relate to it, a film can help awaken our senses.
My teacher was supposed to teach us about the holocaust but instead he just showed as this movie as a way to avoid doing work while still staying somwthat in topic
Good question; is a lie in your case. It was nice that people actually gave insightful answers. My question to you, is your go to movie when you want to ejac, Cars?
Sage Neale seriously tho...what kind of an ending were they expecting? The ending was perfect to me. Peter decided in the end he would rather die then go along with the murderous Nazi regime. He danced one final dance as he waited for them to come. And he went down fighting. Then taking one last look at Thomas, he reveled in knowing that there was still good in him, the Nazis didn't take all of it. Then the scene with his brother as he called out to him and the bunch of kids running in front of him, their hands raised in rebellion, pretty much showing the next generation and the future of the movement. It was a real bittersweet ending, but inspirational. Peter may not survive where he's going, but the Swing Kids will forever be in the hearts of many for generations to come.
We should not forget that the sons and daughters of these Hamburg Swing Kid teens were the kids who danced their brains out to a quartet from Liverpool 15 years later.
The ending was realistic. Ya truth hurts dont it. I like how his brother decided to stick by his ideals and be against the nazis. Hatred from past events exists because adults teach it to kids. Kids dont come into the world hating eachother. Ya they fight over stupid crap but they really are blind to race or gender etc. All that stuff is taught. It shouldn't matter what color someone is. It shouldn't matter what religion someone is. Learn to co exist. Basis is respect. Respect others and they generally will respect you. If not then you know youre dealing with someone with problems
I showed this movie every year for 25 years to my P.E. 20 class during the dance unit. There are so many parallels that you can draw from this movie to what is happening now. SWING HEIL!!
Unfortunately many people don't see the parallels. Maybe many people see them but don't want to "see them", if you know what I mean. They don't want to admit it. The parallels are actually scary. But Kate, when people start getting loaded onto trains or whatever equivalent it will be at that time, they will see the parallels. SWING HEIL!!
Uhh I think you should walk back this comment when you compare our Netflix face book Starbucks plastic fantastic lifestyle in the USA to the absolute horror that was WWII Europe.
@@nicholasbaez1568 No dipshit, because the left are the Nazis. Supporting ACTUAL Ukrainian Nazis. But call American patriots Nazis, when we want to keep our freedoms. Go wear a mask and take your 9th booster. Booster Heil.
@@GozertheGozaerianAmericans truly are constantly in a mental state of trying to find a revolution to follow. We are not living in anything in close to weimar Germany, stop it.
Amazing that we grew up in America watching movies like this, and learning about the history of Nazi Germany...yet we are in the position we're in with so many people "just making the best of it" and keeping their heads down. I'm ashamed of this country right now, and terrified of what the future holds for us.
@Jaystub then get the fxvk out of it!!! 😆 We won't miss you! I enlisted in the army right after 9/11... Then was a deputy sheriff and served in the Uso for 23 years! What the hell have YOU done for this country, except bltch and complain?! Most likely nothing!
Watched this movie in history class. A couple of months ago, it was just a really moving movie it brought me to tears multiple times. I kind of like the fact that it's realistic about what Germany was like in that time. And like I wish had a happy ending, but at the same time understand why it doesn't or couldn't. It shows that friendships were destroyed, families broken up, relationships severed, people killing people and committing suicide. Also loved the music I've always been a fan of Swing and Jazz so the music in this was just amazing. I would definitely recommend this movie, but be warned there are sensitive topics. Edit: Sorry for the rant. Just loved the movie.
okay but i always rewatch this because in a way it reminds me of dead poets society, plus THIS MANZ NEVER HAS A HAPPY ENDING!!! his characters always rebel and then end up getting killed or taken in the end
Too bad there was no sequel to this movie. Cause I wonder what became of Peter and Thomas? Especially after the war if one or both of them survived. Plus it would've been interesting seeing the growth of the Swing Youth movement with a teenage Willie at the forefront (of that movie at least).
I know this is late but basically toms dad was killed. We know this because in the scene that Peter delivers a box to a mother and daughter it is the ashes of her husband in the box. Remember the nazi guy said “DONT worry you’ll be back tomorrow” basically his ashes will be sent home tomorrow
I like it better that way. If they were germans speaking English one would expect an accent. But as we are pretending they are speaking their native language we ought not to expect an accent
I watched this movie again after many years, having seen this in like 2005? In middle school. Wow, those last shouts of swing heil by peter are so powerful ;o a surprisingly powerful performance, bringing a film not just to an end, but more of a beginning -- helping us feel that build of resistance to something evil.
It was a fictionalized version of what really did happen to Swing Kids in the 1930s in Germany or Sophie Scholl's White Rose who simply left messages about Nazism and their actions about. Those teens were executed. SK were sent to the army and the Eastern Front.I read there were 3,000 White Rose. I dont know if all were executed But Sophie and her brother were, I think ✌️🙏
I liked this movie but the accents really hurt the immersion. It takes place entirely in Germany yet only the Nazi's like Kenneth Branagh's character have German accents. Most bizarrely, Christian Bale who has an English accent is doing a fake American accent to play a German.
ya'll are so lucky to be watching this in class, as a student who took and is still taking history, i only came across this film bcuz i am obsessed with robert sean leonard , the actor who played peter in this film
I thought the film was fine, if a bit paint-by-numbers. The dancing sequences were terrific, and make me want to learn how to swing. HOWEVER, this final scene was painfully cringeworthy, and ends the film on a flat note (of which Benny Goodman would not approve, surely).
The young actor playing peters brother played the original billy Abbott on the young and the restless he also appeared in one of the stepfather movies the third movie as well as a horror movie with Chucky actor brad doriff
This comment didn’t age well considering we have a real fascist in office now. After all, fascism is forcing people to live their life according to your values. Now Biden is forcing businesses to vaccinate their employees. What do you have to say to this? Huh? Go ahead. I’ll wait!
+Hassan Haq Yes, but it tells about the movement as a whole, not about especially Peter. "Hundreds of Swing Kidswere sent to work camps. Thousands more were forced into the army and died in the war. But the movement continued to grow, and a new generation of Swing Kids survived to see the defeat of the Nazis." It means most likely that his little brother survived, while he died. Sorry if I make you sad with that now.
