Rick Steves is like the high school teacher we all wish we had. I was born and raised in New York City. In the home we grew up there was a painting done by my father of the Matterhorn in the living room. And I became enchanted by it and determined to go there when I was very young. Dad promised to take me there if I could earn the airfare. At the age of fifteen, I found a job at a Wetsons Hamburger restaurant. About 10,000 flipped hamburgers later I had saved enough. I was sixteen in the summer of 1970 when we made the trip firstly to Paris where my father was born. After spending about a week with relatives in France we drove to Switzerland. One of the great jaw dropping experiences one can have in life is to ride the train to Zermatt arriving late afternoon on a sunny day witnessing the Matterhorn first come into view. We stayed a week in Zermatt and my father let me trek alone from Zermatt to the Hornlihut on the ridge of the Matterhorn. That hut is where the mountaineers spend the night before ascending the steep ridge. I was wearing regular shoes and just a light windbreaker with no backpack. All of the others were there with full gear. They looked at me as if I had just come from the moon. The entire trip including my visit in France was sublime. And that trip planted the travel bug in me to ever more distant and exotic lands eventually leading me to where I am now Vietnam which went from one of the most dangerous places to be in 1970 to one of the safest today. My last trip abroad was a wonderful trip to Turkey from Vietnam back in 2019. Hoping all hte best to you Rick Steves!
I’m fortunate enough to live in the Valais region of the Swiss alps, Zermatt and the Matterhorn is just next door from my village! If anybody reading this takes a trip over here let me know and I’ll happily show you around
You live in probably the best region of the best country in the world. I've been to Switzerland probably a dozen of times, that's how much I loved the place. Now that I have kids, I want to show them your beautiful homeland.
As a Swiss resident I enjoy our country side so much and and all those hidden gems, that still aren't discovered. Living in this country is a complete blessing.
I absolutely love Rick Steve's documentary style. I'm not sure how he does it, but it's so calming, informative, and interesting. One of my favorite shows ever!
@@bffsqadroblox889 bruh I live in Qatar and we don't have any scenery, and no mountains. Switzerland is gorgeous for real, just waking up to the beautiful scenery is a dream
Hahahaha it is! Which sometimes makes things stranger when you go visit other countries even European or occidental countries sometimes you’re surprised that it’s not like this everywhere
I once heard somebody refer to Switzerland as the only country that was 'finished' (i.e., everything was complete, with no more building work to do). This is probably true for most of the country, but I was disappointed with Geneva when I went there about 10 years ago because there was too much graffiti.
Watching this brings back so many happy memories of my grandmother and I watching Rick on PBS. She has been gone for several years now, but she always loved watching Rick explore Europe. Thank you for the memories.
I am forever grateful to be born and to live in such a magnificent country. If anyone needs tips or is planning a visit soon, I’d be happy to help and even to take time to show you around ! I visited most of Switzerland and it is never enough. Thank you Steve for such a wonderful video!
I was born in Bern and grew up in Büren and now live near Americas Alps, the North Cascades Washington State. Honestly if you’ve never driven up the Mt Baker hwy (hwy 542) in Washington state you should, but don’t stop at the resort the road continues another 3-4 miles which is the Alps portion of the drive. Once you reach the parking lot Mt Baker (a volcano) is just south of you and Mt Shuksan just to the east. During the 1998-1999 ski season Mt Baker broke the World Record for most snowfall in a single year at 1140”/95’/29 meters (641” avg snowfall) and parts of the cult classic movie Deer Hunter was filmed just steps from the upper parking lot. As far as your comment on the cleanliness of Switzerland it is very true, a week doesn’t go by that while driving around I don’t mention to my wife or kids that that pile of garbage we just passed would NEVER be on the ground in Switzerland. The Swiss truly care about their country
@@powdertrax9742 I have lived in West Virginia my entire life and love mountains. Switzerland is the only European country I ever wanted to see. It looks like not a single blade of grass is out of place.
What I feel watching this video is so much envy for those who were able to visit Switzerland😭. I love hiking and the combination of ice, green lands and continuous mountains is so breathtaking. It’s hard to get a visa for our country’s passport but I will definitely start building my travel portfolio once this pandemic is over. Italy was my dream European country to visit but now it changed lol. Nature beauty of the alps is so breathtaking!
I'm for a village in India a fairly middle class low income boy . I'm very glad I could enjoy such scenic beauty of Switzerland .. If I achieve or made good for life ill definitely visit all this place and enjoy each moment with peace .
I can certainly understand why you like to visit Switzerland. What an absolutely BEAUTIFUL country with hard working intelligent people. I would love to visit this wonderful little country.
The thing I love the most about Rick's videos, is that he makes me feel like I'm with him in every travel, he knows exactly what to show and how to do it, never got bored when watching his videos...
We made this exact trip in 2018 and it was just as stunning, exactly as Rick shows in this great travel doco. We were so lucky that the weather was so sunny the whole time we were there , The train trips were wonderful and so efficient, everything runs like clockwork. Great memories of one of the most picturesque countries in Europe.
@@maheshreddy6624 Yes the snow is always there, even in the middle of Summer as The Eiger mountain is so high and when you get there you can go on to the glacier. Definitely worth the trip.
While watching this, I told my colleague that if ill be able to visit this place, then I am ready to die. Then I continue watching and I had the biggest smile or the biggest www on my face. This place is majestic. I feel relaxed and at peace just watching this. How much more if I can see this place with my own eyes? This place is like a heaven version of living human beings. Someday ill be there
I don't think there's a beautiful country like Switzerland in whole world! it's breathtakingly beautiful!! Thanks a lot Rick for taking us with you to this amazing country!!
I can't tell you the good it does my heart to see Rick out there in the world with new episodes filmed in the summer of 2020. It feels like the breath of fresh air and hope that have been so desperately missing from life in recent months. Thank you to everyone involved in making this
Thank you, Rick Steves. You have taken me on a beautiful, peaceful, inspiring journey. Even if I may never go in person, I feel like I have actually visited Switzerland, thanks to you.
The person who is reading this comment You’re pretty awesome! Everything is going to be all right May you be safe! May you be happy! May you be healthy! May you live with ease
If your wishes become true for someone, it will be good. Since pandemic I live much more bad then before because of my neighbors upstairs and one neighbor on the same floor. They disturb my privacy, trying to pay my attention to them using violence (they are not my men’ tipe at all), verbal and fiscal. They don’t let me sleep, woke me up nocking to my ceiling for several years already, since 2020, disturbing me with sound of a drill when I was working online etc.
Switzerland is without a question the most beautiful country i ever been in... And Jungfraujoch was very special place to visit... I never forget that trip... 😊
Someday i will visit europe continent And experience this dramatic scene and iconic life.. Like living in a world that full of piece, freedom, joy and love..
I’ve watched this numerous times, traveling vicariously through Rick’s helpful, exciting and charming videos to breathtakingly beautiful places. Someday soon I’ll see Switzerland in person!
I’m 28 years but I swear I just want to visit it so I can run like kids around the green areas ❤️😂 This is so peaceful nature is beautiful 😍😍 watching from Egypt 🌸
Switzerland was dream of my teen age aspirations, now I m 57 yrs old, couldnt make it,thankyou Rick Steve & team, you made it possible for me with your travel video.
I love the mood, pace, the chosen sights and the stories from your videos! I actually followed up and visited quite a few of the sights, including the ones mentioned here. I try to refresh my memory a couple of times by repeatedly watching some of the episodes I especially liked, before I go to these places,, or just for pure enjoyment, even if I don’t - because they are quite spectacular, and give the effect of being immersed in the nature and history. Keep up the great work!
Beautiful, breathtaking!!! A country that belongs to her people who keep the traditions and everyone takes care of it. That's why is sooooo beautiful and clean.
" be alone to savour an unforgettable moment" I fully agree with you. Many times nature can be fully enjoyed only in solitude. I am your ardent follower from India. Thanks for providing this opportunity to visit Alps from the comfort of my house.
One day i will go to Switzerland it’s a amazing natural beauty country. When i was sawing this country in RU-vid video i literally fall in love of this country nature ❤
How the ppl have worked hard to keep their indigenous culture alive in this tech crazy world n tourists flocking in from every direction! It's always the ppl who make places look more beautiful n inviting! 💜
Amazing country with amazing places to see. I have been there in 2019 and I still amazed with the beautiful scenary. This video is a must to see. Thanks for posting.
I LOVE THIS GUY, Noone in my family would understand it, I'm not the type to seem like I like him but his Christmas one a few years ago was awesome, i love Rick Steves
Thank you so much Rick for doing this heart warming-jaw dropping videos. I love how you do a quality work by having fun. I enjoy your light hearted videos. I also love the fact that you help the viewer immerse in the culture without braking the pocket. :) Stay safe and enjoy.
This video is making me kinda emotional. We travel to Switzerland every year. Unfortunately we had to cancel this years ski trip due to Covid. Hopefully they will allow tourists this summer 🤞🏻
@@arqelf9505 not really. I live in Europe and the Swiss alps are only a 15 hour car drive away. So yess I’m very lucky that we get to go there each year but I definitely don’t have the money to travel across the world every year.
Thanks the narrator for that poetic description of the most perfect country in Europe and in extension the world : Switzerland. I have been fascinated by Switzerland from my high school days, more than two decades ago. Again thanks.
A superlative presentation, and the sceneries are absolutely majestic! thanks for providing us the chance to admire so many fairytale places from wonderland!
Thanks Rick Steves for touring us through the beautiful universe at a tip of the button.Gods creation is marvellous. Nice to get to know the cultures across nations, languages spoken, music, lifestyles. The simultaneous commentary is superb and lovely picture quality. Thoroughly enjoy watching the videos .
