The reason we have a lot of nuts in the chocolate is because in war time we had less food and nuts were an easy way to make more sweets with less chocolate.

The ovomaltine isn't supposed to be a normal chocolate. It bases of the ovomaltine hot chocolate (milk) and it smells similar. I dunno why you didn't like it, I think it is because you ate something beforehand resulting in the meat aftertaste because I have never tasted it that way.
