The witty mention of the DMV and waiting in line brought back memories of the massive lines waiting to get into the Vatican and St. Peters Cathedral. Traveler tip; buy your Vatican tickets online and have priority. I was able to see the Sistine Chapel with just a handful of others around. Also, get to St. Peters before it opens, before dawn and wait with the nuns and priests on pilgrimage. I stood before Michelangelo's Pieta for several minutes by myself. I'm not even Catholic and it was magnificent. Later in the day the line was six people deep for blocks.

Also...if you get in line really early...head straight to the chapel and bypass everything else. You'll be in there alone and can go back and see the other stuff later.

I was blessed to visit the Vatican in the early 70s. I was an adolescent. I love history and art and more than anything Jesus. I too stood in front of La Pieta and I got emotional looking at the reminder of Jesus' death. I also got to see the Sistine Chapel before it was restored; the colors were darker and richer. I haven't been back but I have seen pics of the Sistine Chapel after the restoration and they are bright but I liked it the "natural" way.

@@thespia Yes we did this as well ... however, I was also interested in a spending time with the Raphael frescoes ... The School of Athens/ Socrates stanzia and wished I'd spent just a few more moments there before darting off to the Sistine Chapel. I tried to go back but, it was packed and impossible to move against the flow. Nevertheless, an indelible experience. In the Sistine Chapel I did have some audio explanation and was able to experience it all the more. I thought I might have been distracting. .

@@Kepi_Kei Yes Michelangelo's work is so moving. I have a theory that there are simply centuries of appreciation imbued right into the marble. The David was glowing and took my breath away. I have a friend who couldn't find her sports fan husband and found him sitting and crying softly by Michelangelo's unfinished work near the David. I read the Agony and the Ecstasy before visiting these places. Really brought it to life.

Yet another example of another bad outcome when religion and the military are mixed. This event was possibly exacerbated by the Germano-Swiss mindset, which has contributed to many positive aspects of Western Civilization; but when it's the base of a psychopathic persona, unfavorable things can happen. Good analysis. PS I used to live in Zurich, so I think I understand these relationships, albeit in retrospect. I also recall a visit to Vatican City many years ago, during which my wife and I, in error, ventured down into a portion of the city forbidden to tourists. We were immediately stopped by the Swiss Guards (indeed, with crossed halberds!). What was odd is that they spoke to me in Swiss German, which is not understandable by many Germans! I voiced my apologies in my best "Zürchertüütsch" and went on my way,

Youch - I had an ex I'm pretty sure was a vulnerable narcissist. Always stressed, doggedly focused on their job and duties and really quite good at it, but somehow always a victim not being recognized for their efforts. I believed her stories and saw her as someone trying to do their best but getting unfairly rejected. When we broke up, she seemed to switch personalities and said things that were just off the rails, calling me a murderer and a drunk, and that was really the first time I started to wonder if her version of reality might be tinged with delusion. The description of how these narcissists find enemies based on their permanent victim status, then convince themselves that anything they do is justified, suddenly made me very glad things ended when they did.

As a manager of some experience, in applying the everlasting humiliation of losing his service medal, the Commander left the Guard with nowhere to go, other than to leave what would likely have been his life's ambition. It was in effect a constructive dismissal for what appears to be a minor infraction. But what do you do if you think you're going to have to lose everything? Usually nothing. Usually...
@simonxag
@simonxag 2 года назад
Usually when someone is disciplined (in any organization) they are handed the punishment. Not here. This was a setup of a surprise very public humiliation with a good chance that the Guard would react in the ceremony further adding to the grief. Just that final fact makes the Commander's actions (at least) unprofessional and you can't help think that the Guard wasn't the only one with serious personal issues.

Maybe it wasn't just the minor infraction. It sure looks like the young man was having an affair with the good commander's wife. In the long tradition of "don't get your pie where you get your paycheck," Maybe the whole withholding the meddle thing was just the commander getting the guard back. That's actually understandable.

It’s true. There’s a whole recruitment process that qualified applicants need to follow. The Swiss guards date back to a time when mercenaries was one of then-poor Switzerland main exports. I suppose that the terms of the 500 year old agreement have been many times updated, but the basic deal remains the same. I believe it’s the only exception to the status of neutrality to which Swiss citizens are bound. No Swiss person can actively hold arms on behalf of another state without going to prison upon their return to Switzerland.

Myself, completlely unitrested in soccer, would rather have a number in sqare meter or ha, but that is the way they do it over here. You will not diminish me with made-up terminology. A trans-woman will always be a trans-woman NOT a woman. Not matter how many surgeries, medications you (not you, general you) take, you'll never be a biological woman. Bones, DNA, hair, muscles all designate sex not identity. This is scientific FACT. Non-binary can identify as both, but if they're going to have a baby, they've become a she. Men cannot have babies. Don't get it twisted, and that's what you're doing. Twisting the science/given terminology to fit your narrative. You're living in a fantasy world if you believe that "a woman is what she identifies as". END OF STORY.

Shocking true story. Makes me wonder why sometimes more than 2 policemen are required when they are arresting someone too. Like when a man sitting right across from me behind the driver of a bus on Sunday got arrested by 4 policemen who were carrying larger than pistols guns. They seemed to come from out of no where just before all 4 boarded the bus in a hurry after a lot of passengers including me had started wondering why the bus was sitting at a stop for so long. I sure went to the back of the bus in a hurry after they said to him, "You are under arrest".

@merrymaid2890
@merrymaid2890 2 года назад
@@nmartin5551 That is what the newspapers speculated about. The pilot had apparently said from the beginning that Crooks jumped. Some quotes from an article written August 18 about the preliminary report: According to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), before he jumped, Crooks became noticeably distressed after damaging the craft's landing gear during a failed runaway approach. The plane's pilot-in-command said that Crooks "became visibly upset about the hard landing" soon after they diverted to another airport.” About 20 minutes into the diversion to RDU, Crooks stopped communicating with air traffic controllers, the report said. He opened his side cockpit window at 3,500 feet and "may have gotten sick." Crooks then lowered the ramp in the back of the airplane, saying he felt ill and needed air, "got up from his seat, removed his headset, apologized, and departed the airplane via the aft ramp door," the report said.
