This is the official channel of the TV show Swiss Railway Journeys, run in association with MITV, the production company that created the show. The following episode represents original content made and copyrighted by MITV, and its content is in no way repurposed.
Join us for a captivating journey along the magnificent SBB Gotthard Line, one of the world's premier rail routes, running north-south through the centre of Switzerland. In Gotthard North we take the ex-TEE "Gottardo" for the ride from Zürich to the Gotthard Pass.
We join our train at Zürich Main Station and are soon running alongside Lakes Zürich, Zug and Lucerne. We break our journey to look around the old town ot Zug, visit the fascinating animal park at Arth-Goldau, and the Victorinox factory in Schwyz where the famous Swiss Army Knives are made.
We look at the history of the line and its locomotives and visit the SBB depot at Erstfeld, not only home to the most modern of the Swiss Federal Railway's fleet, but also to two of the surviving "crocodile" locomotives from the early days of electrification.
After Erstfeld the line begins to climb steeply, twisting and turning around the village of Wassen, whose church is a famous vantage point for railway enthusiasts.
We end our journey at Göschenen, where we leave the train to look at the Gotthard Pass road and follow the old horse-drawn post-coach to the summit hospice.
(recorded in 1994)

I love Swiss Railway Journeys. Malcolm Brown’s brilliant narration and warming voice is an amazing accompaniment to the beauty of Switzerland.

Yes its Malcolm Brown narrating that makes the series. It would still be good but not as seriously interesting and beautiful.

To think that the Gotthard Tunnel is one of the longest rail tunnels in the world is a massive achievement.

Some of my relatives immigrated to the US from Switzerland in the mid 1600s and settled into PA and later Virginia. They came here looking for land to farm, and that's what they did. Eventually, they ended up doing that in Ohio and later in central Illinois. And I don't think any relative with the same history in the family has ever gone back to visit Switzerland. I was all set to go, you guessed it, in the Spring of 2020. Still waiting to get a chance to travel, even to Ohio, today.
