You beat the living shit out of that thing and it just took it in stride. Kind of nuts to see it make it through basically unscathed. This video is a ringing endorsement of the knife. Great job man. I don't even need a fixed blade like this but I want it now just because of how tough it is.
After watching this and your equally informative standard review, there is no need to spend any time watching other vids. Looking for a beater that I like to look at---or at least don't dislike to look at--and I'm gonna give this one a go, Thanks!
Ive been looking at this for a few weeks now. I was wanting cold steel srk but have seen some handle issues kind of like my sp1. Thanks for the show. You worked for this one
Haha! I’ve never seen a guy so eager to disprove a knife. Although in the end your worst fears were confirmed. 🤣 Thanks for all the hard work, and many will benefit from your thorough review! I do agree - what’s the point of adding an aluminum end to the tang - doesn’t seem practical or cost effective, but seems to hold its own. 😊 🇺🇸
Would never choose this over an srk. Especially in sk5. I do plan on getting one in cpm 3v. They have both the original and compact in 3v now at midway USA.
Next time use a soldering iron and put it against the screw to loosen the blue loctite that's probably used to keep the handles together. Heating the screws will loosen it and you'll have the screws out in no time.
Jesus bro that's impressive will get soon! Been looking at the flipper pocket knife didn't know they made a fixed blade great video love your channel thanks
Hey PBKG I saw on Walmart they have an axe as well as a machete so it looks like if one wanted too you could have a whole camping set for about 110 bucks which ain’t bad if the axe and machete are anything like the knife…..great vids man I always love the pure honesty you put out
I purchased the fixed blade, folder, and hatchet. Love them all. One complaint is with the hatchet handle is it is totally round and difficult to index. Likes to twist in the hand when chipping with it.
Well, it held up pretty well considering the hell you put it through. Not a bad looking knife. Not one I'm likely to pick up, but then again I already have enough knives to equip a damn army, so that isn't really a ding against the knife! 🤣
I aint gonna lie, man they are hard to beat for the price.. i sharpen mine with a damn 4 way fingernail buffer all the time. It touches up real easy. Now with that being said, it wont hold that hair popping edge for a long time.but it will maintain a good working edge for a good while... and literally you can sharpen it up on anything. Its not prone to chip or roll either. Its a really good buy for under 40 bucks
Don’t normally like destruction videos, but having bought the Stählern some time ago and being impressed with it, I wanted to see what you found. You succeeded in confirming for me I spent my $40 well. I was curious as to how the aluminum part of the tang was held on, figuring that would be a weak point. Never tried to take the scales off though. Thanks for doing it for me. I am actually impressed with how they did it. Is it full tang? Not really, but I would call it 98% tang, good enough for me. I understand that the SwissTech Stählern is a Walmart exclusive. I have another Walmart exclusive knife in the Gerber Prodogy fine edge. Another very good knife. I like them both, but somehow the Stählern seems to find myself in my hand more often. A third Walmart knife ts the 11 inch fixed blade, a Buck Reaper knockoff. It is my dedicated battening knife. It has somehow survived almost 4 years now, but after watching your video, it might just find itself being left at home, it appears that the Stählern is more than capable on its own. Thanks again!
Great test. Guess I was wrong about the heat trest, must just be the Aus8 because mine seems to need sharpening a bit more than it should. I was surprised to see it take that much of a bend and stay straight. Although I don't like the boxy handle on it, now I know I can depend on it if I have to.
Aus 8 isn't some super steel. It's not gonna hold an edge like crowbar. But it will resharpen easily. Even on the edge of a car window. And it will hold a working edge for a respectable amount of time. I have a 4 way fingernail file, about as thick as a credit card. It'll touch that blade up proper. Not so much with my benchmade bushcraft 😂
I'm gonna say something a tad bit controversial but it's my opinion. I...... recommend this over the Gerber Strongarm. Reason I say that is this thing is a tank and it sits at 10 dollars below the ORIGINAL Strongarm price which has jumped from being 50 bucks to freaking 90. While this can be had for 40 bucks and after seeing you wrench on it this thing is beefy. Also correct me if I'm wrong but looking at specs it seems that AUS-8 steel is a tad better than 420HC but that could be chalked up to personal preference and the manufacturer of the steel.
For clarification: when you said the blade was bent, was it just the pressure of the wood holding it in the bent shape, and then when you removed the knife, it was revealed that it never bent at all? Great video. Thanks for posting!
The blade was bent from the pressure of the wood. And if the heat treatment was off, it would have stayed bent after removing from the wood or broke. And thank you
@@peterbiltknifeguy thanks so much for the response and thorough explanation. That's what I needed to know for my decision. And I'm heading to Walmart right now to pick one up!
I need to find me some of that Eucalyptus. I just picked up the 420HC version of the Ontario OKC Bushcraft Woodsman to test against the old 5160 steel model. Your test makes me want to go get Survival Lilly’s AUS-8 APO-1 knife...
So I watched another video on this and the guy made a comment about the aluminum spacer which makes a little sense. He said they may have done it to bring the blade balance a little forward towards the tip. But also I know Swiss Tech uses the anodized aluminum for more of a eye catcher too. They may have unknowingly balanced the blade better. Either way, I just bought one the other day because a friend of mine pointed it out while we were buying fishing gear. I haven't used it yet but I'm eager to after your test!
Just my first impression about the aluminum lanyard hole,, well,, even if you polish steel as it starts to wear out the carbides will be exposed, and the steel will wear the lanyard much more quickly than aluminum would. So besides the flashy color (for better visibility) ,, I think an aluminum hole would make for a much better lifetime for the lanyard, and that one time you didn't know how fast it was wearing might be that one time you drop the knife or worse, lose it.
I have carried this knife for (4) months and I like the sheath. I did epoxy the rotating mechanism because it would spin like a roulette wheel. A good cheap fixed blade knife that isn't carryable as a result of a junk sheath is of zero value to me.
@@peterbiltknifeguy not really . Any benchmade would of broken . Not to mention supposedly they are made of good materials where a great quality materials are applied to a more affordable knife . Plus there is NO 40$ benchmade knife that can hamdle all that stress . So yeah you loose.
Split the wood frozen oak can when it's old enough you just let sit in a cold dry plus the moisture will freeze and you'll only have to hit once it'll split cause it's brittle a lot easier
@@peterbiltknifeguy a really surprisingly good knife for $40, ... I just discovered your channel a few days ago, very interesting, I immediately subscribed, greetings from Bosnia and Herzegovina?
She made it thru the torture chambers and even being bent a bit....The testing was very good but I don't think you should baton your knives as you should have an axe, steak knife, butter knife, camp knife, bushcraft knife, fillet knife, whittler, and the kitchen sink when out in the wild....LOL....Good stuff...
Lol i baton mine knives to why because this is American and I bought them meaning if I want to use a grinder on it I can or use it for a pry bar my opinion 😂
I wish it was that easy. But theses neighbors are the rude blaring music at 1 am on a Wednesday night and getting the cops called on them type of neighbors.
@@peterbiltknifeguy oh man, those are the worst type of neighbors. Well, salute to you for being patient and still putting this video together. It was great to see the stress test without having to put the damage on my own knife lol.
Batoning with a knife to "test" it for "durability" is like taking a Supercar out on the Dakar Rally to test it's "performance". No responsible knife owner who actually LIKES his tools would ever do this in any. real-world situation. This is what hand axes, wedges, and mauls are for. If you regularly find yourself in the need to split wood, but aren't prepared enough for life to own a hand axe, you probably shouldn't be trusted to own any. tool sharper than a plastic spork, let alone be trying to baton tough-grained exotic wood with a sheath knife, FFS. I genuinely worry for the future of the human race... (All this said, I own this knife, as well as the Wurdig folder, and consider them both to be VERY good knives for the price. They might not be the prettiest knives I own, but they certainly are some of the most rugged...)
To your first statement I strongly disagree. How can one test for durability without testing for durability??? Makes no sense. Are you serious or are you being a keyboard warrior troll? Because I clearly stated my opinion on that subject in the video. Now that second opinion of yours. If someone wants to baton the knife they purchase that’s none of your concern. And I don’t know about you. But I never see people on the day to day walking around with a hatchet. 99.9% of people would be lucky to have a fixed blade on them let alone an axe 🤦🏻♂️ And third. Not many people “find themselves in the need to split wood with with a knife”… it’s a TEST. A test that people on RU-vid perform so you can feel comfortable with the purchase of an item. Ever see crash testing in cars? To see how safe they are? To test for durability and weaknesses???For real man 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ And finally. I’m glad you’re happy with your knife 👍
Jesus Christ he bought it just to show us how tough it is omg why do you people freak out when someone is batoning a knife they bought do you also tell people when way to wipe they butt or anything else god bless man grow up 😂
