I have been carrying a Classic for a few years now, here in the UK and, although it is small, it lives on my car keyring, and the amount of times it comes in very handy is amazing! So much in fact, that i have bought them as presents for my wife, her father, and her brother, who all now cannot be without them! 😊
Totally agree, everyone who doesn't carry a larger SAK should carry a Classic...or other 58mm SAK. Or even larger model plus a Classic which I sometimes too e.g. Hiker or Farmer and Classic.
I have owned a few of the classics, plus my dad has owned a few versions of they camping ones. He kept them in his tackle box, hunting bag, truck, pocket. Plus we had a few off brand ones that he didn't care if they got damaged. We lived outside a lot when I was a kid so we used our stuff frequently and you can't beat that quality. My dad a d I were in a real survival situation once when a storm forced us off a mountain we were on and we had to survive for 46 hours in the woods overnight with nothing but our swiss army knives, and a backpack full of survival stuff my dad always had on him. Pouring rain and flooding all around us, we built a shelter, harvested wood to make a small fire that we had to dig out of a cave plus we caught fish by making spears. We truly tested our gear and luckily it didn't fail. When the rain let up and we could get back to our vehicle and leave it turned into a great memory. But not having that tools, woukd habe been bad.
Back in 1978 my dad gave me a victorinox SD classic keychain knife.. it was so useful that I have had one on every keychain ever since.. what gets the most use is the scissors the screwdriver tip that's on the end of the fingernail file it can tighten Phillips head in a pinch also! The tweezers get a lot of use and sometimes the toothpick... I am fortunate to live within 15 minutes of the Swiss army headquarters where they have a warehouse sale twice a year.. I have gotten victorinox SD classic keychain knives for as low as $8 with an advertisement on them.. I have gotten real good deals on other victorinox knives there also..
@@KitbashedSurvivalluckily it didn't come with any marlboro branding either, I hate when companies do that. They had them as a reward for 10,000 points or so when I redeemed it but they quickly shot up to 15,000 points. Most likely due to popularity. Again, didnt have the red scales but they had a black & white topography style design. Great video btw, always nice to see your content.
I saw that knife too and almost bought it, and so happy I didn't. I ended up buying a Victorinox Camper instead, and I just love it. The only thing it lacks is the scissors, but it has a mini saw, so I'm good with that!👍👍👍
I’m a Swiss Army knife lover as well there’s a reason why there are so many sold. I even prefer them over leathermans even though they have their place. Superior quality with Swiss Army knives and the diverse selection make it a reliable, durable timeless solution to cherish and depend on for a lifetime.
Really enjoyed the video Eric. The Classic very much deserves its name. I own a few and have given many as gifts to people over the years. As you say, invest that extra twelve bucks in the real thing and you'll have something that will last.
Great video. Love Victorinox products. The classic belongs to a category of pocket knife called a Gentleman's pocket knife. It was designed to be used for grooming one's self and for opening the occasional parcel package. Today, it is still considered to be the best personal use knife for the price. This pocket knife won't build a shelter but it will manage to give you years of use. Also I hope to see more videos from you soon.
I've been carrying the classic for 20 years, it fell through a hole in my pocked while I was getting in my truck got driven over and sat in the rain for a while, and still works great. I never leave home without it.
Another thing that I would like to add in favor of the real Swiss army knife, is that I've found that if you have a nice tool, that works well and that you trust, you actually will use it more. So it's worth spending the extra money because it will actually be a tool that sees use as opposed to something that clusters your pocket.
I love my SAK!! I have been carrying one since I was 10 and I mean the same one!! Its the now discontinued Champion model, although its really in need of retirement, it just never seems to make it there lol!! I have had many of their models over the years, but its the only one that stuck around!!! My mom got it for me as a Christmas present, so it has a special place.
Great review! I want a Victorinox knife but I don't know which one. There's too many to choose from. Can you review the knives in your collection to give us a better idea of what you like and don't like about them?
I love my Victorinox knives, I have the larger ones, I do more bushcraft, survival, homesteading , farming thing. However haveing a good small knife for a kit is still very useful.
I bought the Swiss tech when it came out. And I use the thing damn near every single day. Used it today in fact, and several times it came in very. Very handy.
I carry a Victorinox SD or Rambler in the 5th pocket (tiny jeans pocket) of every pair of pants I wear. I have several nice and expensive knives but nothing sees more actual use than my SD. I tie a little bit of paracord around the key ring to get it out easier.
Eric, have you thought about a sardine can home build? Not just one can....use a p-38 can opener to totally remove the can sharp edges and then pack your kit into TWO of them. Twice the room but still pocket sized. Seal them together with tape. I once used some chilli cans that I found were identical to Walmart roast beef cans but larger. The roast beef cans were 10oz each and the chilli 15oz. Packed and then sealed with tape. Made up nine of them for family one year. I'd show you the double sardine can but I think it was in my last vehicle. Mine was primed and sprayed international orange and had a simple orange webbing harness with a belt loop.
I already see something I really like about that knife. The key ring is on the opposite side to the blade versus it being on the same side with the true Swiss army
It's amazing what those small scissors on the Classic can do. Also there is an alox version of the Classic which is a nice option (for quite a bit more money).
Thanks for the review. As a pro-tip: if you're going to carry the SAK Classic on your keys buy a leather or silicon sheath for it it will last ten times longer. Without it the scales will fall off in probably less than a year.
I have the SAK and the Swiss Tech. I keep the ST on my key chain because my keys get thrown all over the place and take a lot of abuse. If I break or lose the ST who cares it’s only $11. Plus I mainly use it to cut tape on packages. I use my SAK in my micro EDC kit.
there is a nextool mini multitool similar to the classic sd. pretty good. the cost is about 5-7 bucks. travelled with me throughout europe. very good at removing labels from clothes and slicing italian mini saucages and parmeggiano reggiano
Everything you mentioned is exactly why I returned my Swiss tech for a refund. I needed a small pair of edc scissors for the occasional beard trim and didn't want to spend $25. I got lucky and found a SA classic for $5 at a flea market and am very happy! Btw the Wurdig (green handle) folder has been my edc for 8 months and it's great!
If you wanted to imply quality adding “in USA” is not the way to go, never forget we have had leatherman multi tools in U.K. we know that means poorly made, lack of quality control and you are going to have to tune out the stiff pliers etc.
Any long time Leatherman user will tell you their quality has been declining for years, it's a management decision. IMO the company can't stand up to the onslaught of Chinese clones. I changed to the Swisstool well over a decade ago and wouldn't consider another Leatherman.
@@atomicsmith I wasn’t holding made in U.K. as a sign of quality, that stopped being true long ago. You want consistent high quality, German, Swiss and Japanese, the Chinese are getting there.
I have both the same knives and I use them not like them don't cut don't cut the knock off out it works good I have it too and it's cheaper than between not switch knock-off knife I could give for my grandkids and teach him how to teach them how to use knives right way
The best tool in the classic is the scissors. If make a tool to compete with it you better spend a ton on R&D to top it or even made it comparable. Nothing can easily beat a Swiss made tool
Hi Eric….it’s good to see another video from you! Always check for kitbash!! My absolute favorite channel! I liked the video, however, if it’s made in China, I avoid buying it! Thanks brother!
@@stephenbarabas6286 I’m aware sir, that my device is Chinese made! I said simply I AVOID buying Chinese made products of any kind. Sometimes you have no choice, unfortunately!
If you knew how much products that you use everyday that are made in china...yeah there is some cheap stuff but there's a lot of good things made there. You would be surprised how much high priced knives are made in china but assembled in other countries. And i have lots of em and they are incredible. Dont be ignorant
@@David-cc8xe True. I have a Byrd Tern (Spyderco budget line), a Bokerplus Atlas, a Ruike keychain knife, and a Nextool multitool, and they're all excellent.
If someone compares something this something then both those "something", when it is possible, should be at least put next to each other to check dimensions. these knives, do the have equal dimensions, or not, what about their weight, blade size, etc.
@@stephenbarabas6286 A dream of many collectors/users. A Cadet with added scissors, like the Pioneer with scissors is named Pioneer X. It's not an official model.
@@stephenbarabas6286 That's why it's his dream knife, it doesn't exist. A Cadet X would be a Cadet with an added scissors layer, as that's how Vic designate an alox model with an extra layer comprising of scissors, by adding an X. As in: Pioneer X and Farmer X. Some would like to see an alox Bantam X too.
My son bought me one of the small Victorinox knives with walnut scales. Its lovely and the grain pattern is stunning. It already has sentimental value. I just wish it had the space for the tweezers. Weirdly, the wooden versions skip these.
Yeah, they sometimes skip the tweezer and toothpick on special materials scales, like the wood. I'm guessing it's too much of a pain in the butt for them to cut the notches into the wood scales.
Have you got some sort of comment filter on? I mentioned a similar product that's pretty cheap and its gone. Anyway I'll stick with the leatherman micra, i got to stop buying things i don't need thats pretty much the same as i already have.
I was under in impression that swisstech is its own company making It's own stuff. Not exactly cloning but also not reinventing the wheel. Obviously the swiss army knife has been around for generations and has always had great quality. But over the past year or so I've seen many channel's that only speak on this kinda stuff. And they have been mentioning how the swiss army knife brand just hasn't been putting much effort into making newer stuff with say maybe better steel options or tools assortment options etc. But see for me a knock off is something that is exactly the same with branding and all. And from all I've seen come out of this swisstech company they are adding thing's like the G10 etc. I don't own any swisstech stuff just going off what I've seen from channel's that focus primarily on knives and multitool stuff. Like china is known for making something like the Leatherman wave but in a different name but virtually the same tool at a quarter of the price. I have even seen some china made multitools with quality steel and overall better engineering then some name brand stuff. I don't support clones and that's just my point here is i don't think swisstech is exactly doing that. They just aren't reinventing what we all know work's just adding little thing's that are different then the traditional plastic scales like the swiss army knife.
I agree that this isn't a Vic knockoff, there are Vic knockoffs which have exactly the same shape and colour scales, with a different emblem on, but this doesn't really look like a Vic so I don't see it as a knockoff. I keep seeing comments/opinions that Vic should up their game regarding blade steel especially. I don't remember which yt channel it was on but a few weeks back I saw a vid of a guy who had tried a number of pricey folders with better steel and larger blades but in the end he came to the realisation that in fact for all the cutting tasks he did, the Vic actually performed better. Because blade geometry and grind are also major factors in cutting ability. So he went back to carrying SAKs.
I have a 50 year old classic Swiss army knife, the blade is about half it's original width and I lost the tooth pick, I would be surprised if your copy would last 5 years, so unless it's 10x cheaper it's a false economy.
I got curious and looked up swiss gear & it turns out it's a branch off victorinox. I know it's irrelevant, just thought I'd share that for ppl wondering!🤷♂️
I stopped buying cheap multitools years ago, They broke, became loose after a while or the knife/scissors just become blunt far too quick and easily. Now I only Buy S.A.K and Leatherman.. They are FAR better quality and just work, as well as the warrantee is awesome... Not once have I regreted it...
Yep. China is capable of making superb products. It's unfair to classify anything out of china as "junk" but a lot of ignorant people do it anyway. They're the type of people who called Japanese stuff junk lol.
Better grip is pointless for a tool your fingers wrap around it just attracts filth like the blade hole. Victorinox works even to sharpen blades in a pinch so think it is a diamond file.
I still use my 1985 dutch soldiers knife made by victorinox. Serves me well for almost40 years. Also my other victorinox knives and leatherman charge multitools works very well. No need for others. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Ripoff? I have both and I prefer the Swisstech. Not as slippery because of the Micarta handles. Plus its more subdued and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. Your review started off quite biased with the word ripoff. The Listec is also half the price of the red classic. I also have several Swisstech knives and they ALL rock!
😂 checking "blade play" and it sure looked like you dang near bent that tinfoil blade on the Victoronix .... I have never understood people and the love they have for that brand... Crap plastic slippery handles. Crap blade steel. Useless tweezers. And unless you can floss with a shoe lace that toothpick is useless.
