#GGAleste3 is a brand new Shoot Em Up developed by a Dream Team of legends M2 brought in. Designers, Artists, Programmers and Musicians, from former Compile and Raizing, that worked on games like Musha Aleste on the Mega Drive, Blazing Lazers and Super Star Soldier on the PC Engine, and Battle Garegga on the Sega Saturn. 2 years later and I am still blown away by how thorough, how competent, and how enthusiastic your review of this collection was. I still watch it every few months because it reminds me of just how special these games are and all the work M2 did to effectively archive them. Your videos are my stress-reliever when I need to mentally reset. Thanks so much for your excellent reviews and tributes

You’re very welcome. And 2 years later I haven’t changed my mind. I still find this collection to be one of their all time best and most competent collection releases that’s likely slept on by far too many because it’s featuring their 8bit games. But they are just so fun especially with all the fixes and options that they’ve become the definitive way to play them all for me. And it’s gotten me to play and enjoy the GG games more than ever having grown on me since this review. Not to mention the incredible new GG3. They really outdid themselves and though I doubt we will see it anytime soon I’d love to see the rare MSX games like Aleste 2 and Gaiden get the same treatment. Everybody wants to see a 16bit collection instead despite us already having endless easy ways to play them. This one is really special to me so I’m thrilled you found so much to enjoy from it too. Power Strike 2 especially is really one of Compiles best ever games.

I wonder if 2d Shmups just have a stigma of being low quality in the eyes of modern gamers. The price probably isn't an issue with shmup fans, rather, game fans in general. That's why I like that you're trying to introduce people to this genre.

I definitely agree with that. Shmup fans love the games and are willing to pay for good and unique games and collections. It's the average gamer that will not. Even though this collection isn't likely the ideal entry point for new blood, it was highly anticipated by those that love the games. But I can see a future collection of their more mainstream games bringing in new people well. But in general, there are a lot of shmups fans, older mostly, that play for fun and aren't super good at them or high scorers. They just have nostalgia for the games and enjoy them... and I fall more into that camp myself vs elite shmup players. So I get the mindset and try to cater to that demographic, as I'm one of them. So I am trying to make videos that I also would want to see myself. And so far I'm glad to see so many enjoying them.

Im going to tell you why you're the man and I love what you do. 1. You made that list of must buy SHOOTERS that are on Steam Sale right now (this is crucial to support the genre and I dont know why more people dont do it) and 2. In this video when you showed the settings menu you also showed the TRANSLATION right next to it which no one ever does. Your brain works in a beautiful way and I appreciate it.

I have to thank all the great people on my discord for the help on the Shmups list. I am still catching up with a lot of Steam games and I wouldn't have known at least half of those great games without them. On the menu translation, I hear you on that. I had to use google translate constantly to figure it all out, so if I was going through all that trouble, so was anyone else not speaking Japanese. Google translate was a godsend though I can't live without it all of a sudden these days. 😅

@@ShmupJunkie Haha your review made me so hype i underestimated the amount of japanese! Indeed the google app with live translations is a god send! Hoping we will get an english patch which appearantly another shooter did get (and the translated trophy list possibly hints upon?) Oh and while i thought i 'only' got the game it came with the art book! nice little bonus. One q tho as you also play on mister as well , the game (in particular the game gear games wich i so far played the most due to my s.u.c. factor :D ) seems to have less slowdown when played on mister as opposed to the games here in the collection (i chose the ps4 version cuz thropies!). I know that there is an option to remove ALL slowdown but that scares me a bit with the increased difficulty that comes attached! Curious on your opinion! Will also try out the games via everdrive on my megadrive to compare. Could be a case where, even though it is a actually a good thing in this example, the mister core is not that accurate in this aspect :)

Awesome stuff! For me the big stand out is Aleste 3! It s pretty crazy they developed such a sophisticated shmup for the game gear ha. I think it s mostly M2 flexing how in tune they are with the hardware they work with.

M2 seems to have taken that next step in bringing in outside talent like they did for GG3 with the ex-Compile and Raizing staff. Makes it exciting to see what they end up doing with Aleste Branch and if it really ends up being a killer follow up to Garegga or in that style. If so I'm sure you'll be all over it. 😉

It's so incredibly good right! And for a Game Gear hardware game to be this good is simply incredible. I will be revisiting it again many times to enjoy and in Special Mode next. I can only imagine what they could pull off with Mega Drive hardware or similar.

Thank you. It was a huge effort but I'm glad I got it out in time. UBO was just telling me how this is the first M2 owned IP new game they released and setting up for Branch and future releases. If M2 continues to keep bringing in talent like this to make new games they may quickly become the new Konami of the 2020s, just on a smaller scale. Can't wait to see what they do next having full control like this.

Many people have complained that this collection doesn't include all the Aleste games, but look at the insane amount of detail-obsessed work that went into this. And it sounds like GG Aleste 3 is worth the price of admission alone.

Pretty much what I have been saying too. It's apples to oranges to compare this to the lazy compilations we see coming out most of the time. This is like a complete restoration and improvement of the originals in so many ways. And yes, that new game just blew many of us away. It's way better than it ever deserved to be and even I expected. It's one of the best new games I've played all year.

Just getting into the Aleste series and I gotta say GG Aleste 3 is absolutely amazing. Truly impressive game despite the limitations and just the story of the legendary devs getting together to make a sequel that runs on real hardware is unbelievable.

M2 have taken it to a different level with their shmup releases over the last year or two. I honestly can't think of any other developer in the history of gaming who has put in as much for the fans.

We really are lucky to have them developing for the genre and why I keep harping in many videos to support them. There aren’t any other devs that can bring back some of that old talent and do it right like they do. I wish only the greatest success for them and that they can grow the IPs they own like Aleste into becoming an even bigger self sufficient publisher.

Watching this again in 2023 after I finally decided to get this collection and played it for a while. And to anyone equally on the fence as I was ...even after Shmup Junkies raving review... get it ASAP. It is worth every penny. Pure work of love by M2. And even as a fan of mostly newer style bullethell shmups, I find a lot to love in the original 80s/early 90s Aleste games. Also every praise GG Aleste 3 gets here and elsewhere, it's earned. Feels like a long-lost classic and I can't stop thinking about how cool it is conceptually. Aleste collection will be a regular guest on my Switch these hot summer nights, when a small handheld system is perfect to sit on the balcony and get some action! (fingers crossed for another collection covering the 16bit entries in the future). And as usual, thanks for the amazing review and enthusiasm provided by this channel :):):)

So awesome, love to hear that you found me and are enjoying the channel so much. I've only been at it for several months but am really enjoying it. The new GG Aleste 3 is killer you won't regret picking it up. It was both my, and Electric Underground's pick for best new shmup of 2020. So I look forward to you getting it and letting me know what you thought. I wish I could post videos more often than once a week, but I am trying to focus on quality and making each one something to look forward to, versus just me unboxing something and yapping about it. Nothing wrong with that I guess but there is plenty of it already to go around.

With new incredible games like GG3 on this collection, they certainly never will. I'm still amazed we got a new game that good and perfectly 90s in this day and age. Many modern games copy that 90s aesthetic. GG3 literally IS one of those games, like it could've released during that generation and sold like crazy. It's so cool in every way.

A few years back,when the Sega Saturn was losing the battle against those new 3D games, I thought the time of 2D games would be over,but boy I am glad I was wrong and it became a style and type of game over the years. been having a blast with this collection so far, ive mostly been playing the GG games and have one ccd everything except the special mode in aleste 3, after that im gonna do it all again on no slow down mode! Great collection and a great buy!

Yeah I looove this collection, and the no slowdown modes are awesome. I almost default to playing that way as the GG slowdown is a bit extreme on the earlier games, though not as bad on the new GG3. Special mode with no slowdown is no joke. But what a good game.

I think it's common all around in every field. I see it in art, photography, technical work. We are so used to getting such good content of all kind for free now (including youtube) that it's expected. But here we know we are doing it for fun and not much compensation. We are youtube's slave labor 😂. If it's one's profession though and how they make a living, it always kills me to see talent devalued. Lots of great work out there that doesn't continue as people expect it for free or bargain prices. I'll make videos for free all day long without expectation, but as a programmer I won't step outside my door for a penny under a proper rate. This goes toward deeper discussion on future economic models once the current one is no longer sustainable. It may be a pipe dream, but in a world where one didn't need to work to have a roof and food (because machines pretty much handle it all at some point), and we all have to collectively find ways to keep people productive, I think there will actually be an artistic and creative renaissance. Imagine the talent out there in the world and if people with the passion for it spent their life creating what they love instead of being part of the rat race. Maybe or not in our lifetime, but it will happen sooner or later once people are replaced as a source of cheap labor. Can't happen soon enough far as I'm concerned.

You will love the new GG3 it’s crazy well made. I think you’d really dig power strike 2 as well. You won’t believe they did it on a master system. It’s no slowdown and damn fun.

If you always wanted to play these classics there is certainly no better way. I enjoyed the fixes and improvements so much I don't see myself playing my original copies again aside from some nostalgia. And the new game is fantastic. Grab it while you can!

As a matter of fact, it's YOUR review that got me sold on this beautiful collection of shooters. Hoo boy! My wallet is totally giving me the middle finger right now! Thanks a lot, buddy! (jk) No telling if this will ever come to the US, so I figured "TO HELL WITH IT!" So in two weeks, I'm buying it from Play Asia, a store I haven't shopped at in over a decade! Also I gotta agree with you on the subject of whether this collection is worth the asking price. Like you said, talent deserves to be recognized and hard work deserves to be properly compensated. As steep of a price it is, I know I am paying for quality! I mean, it's freaking M2 for crying out loud! And I respect the hell out of what they do! I'm still hoping they release that Toaplan collection though!

Seriously though I’m glad a lot of people are picking this up and if I was able to do my part for this fine work so they make more then it’s mission accomplished for me. I’d like to see more brand new games like this especially that are this good and I’m sure if people are willing to pay the right price we will get more. If it makes you happy M2 already bought the rights to the entire Toaplan catalog and plans to release the games. Some should be coming soon this year so it’s exciting!

Bought this game halfway through watching this video and kept getting blown away with what I was getting as I watched further. I am happy to spend the money if it’s for quality like this. Gotta love M2 for the work they are doing to “preserve games”, which is a hot topic these days.

Thanks and I can totally see why. The games are much older circa late 80s on some, the graphics are not very impressive by todays standards, so it just doesn't seem appealing to anyone that doesn't already have nostalgia for them. But they really are great games and play so well. I enjoy them and wanted to make a good video highlighting what makes them cool. Especially Power Strike II it's likely better than many 16bit shmups in terms of design and overall gameplay.

The audio delay was kind of perplexing I don't get that part, but I don't care much about that in a shooter anyway. The input delay was about as good as I've seen on the Switch right there with the excellent Ikaruga port. I was also happy to see it perform well.

M2 are known to make a excellent job. I am glad they developed the core grafx mini software. Shootemups are really crap with lag.

Great review! I picked up the collectors edition with the GG micro and have had a great time with it, even though I haven't spent as much time with it as I would like. Seeing everything you point out has given me a lot to look forward to next time I pick it up =)

Really glad you did and hope you get your money's worth at some point and enjoy. GG3 especially was a fantastic surprise and is a perfect blast from the past with modern touches. I'd love to see them bring back old industry vets for more original work just like it.

I'd love to see more in house developed games like GG3. Serious potential there if they can keep bringing in that kind of talent and sell enough copies. Hopefully they've made even deeper connections after this and can do as you say. New Compile and Raizing games made by old Compile and Raizing staff is something I didn't expect to ever be a thing.

Supposedly some of them have been with M2 for a while now, which is even better. They have access to all that talent for much of what they work on. I guess Aleste Branch will be there next unique game and if this one is any measure, we have something awesome to look forward to. I prefer pixel art to the more modern look they are going with, but it make sense as it seems like more of a Saturn era, Garegga style game.

This is an amazing collection please do. Still one of my favorites of theirs in the last few years as I love the older 8bit shooters. And GG3 is fantastic. Just know it's Japan only, so you'll need to look it up on the Japan eShop. It's super easy to make a free account I use it all the time. I also think they still are selling physicals of them too on play asia. M2 are bad about western releases, but they're good about making sure there is plenty of stock on their games.

word of warning on the psikyo ports, they are not even close to the same level as this collection. The games themselves are excellent so if you can get a good deal go for it, but don't expect anything besides bare bones lazy options. No save states, no replays, no stage selects or ways to practice. It's a bare minimum effort. Again, the games are good, so if that's all you want go for it, but don't overpay. Comparing the features to something like this M2 collection is night and day.

I saw that it's missing a few questionable things like online leaderboards, but to be honest I just want it to run well and have remappable controls. From what I could tell from Tengai, it would be what Im looking for. Plus physicals for old games that are hard to come by? IM IN!

@@guysafari Totally the games are great. Some of the games are just extremely hard like Gunbird 2 and Dragon Blaze, so it would’ve been really nice to have ways to practice stages or at least save at hard points to practice. But it’s the best we have at the moment.

Yeah GG3 was my favorite new shooter in all of 2021, it was that good. A big part of it wasn't just M2, but that they brought in the OG programmers and designers from Compile, and Namiki for the music. They know what they're doing and how to make a proper game just like they would back in the 90s and it came out perfect. Aleste Branch is going to be a different beast and not sure when it comes out yet, but it's being programmed by the top Battle Garegga player in the world, so that gives you an idea of what that game may be like and what the vibe will be.

I have to say the new GG3 has got to be one of the best new shooters released this entire year, it's beyond most of our expectations in it's depth. We all expected something cool, but were pretty shocked to get a top tier new game that's as good as anything we've played in a while.

I don't see anyone bitching and moaning about the high cost of this collection. As you correctly state - it's a premium product put together with dedication and passion. It's ALSO representing a super niche genre within a super niche genre, so I doubt M2's accountant is banking on this being a hot seller by any stretch; rather this is the kind of product only made possible due to the bulk of M2's work being contract jobs for other parties.

I got quite a lot of this looks cool but 70 bucks is too much responses back when I did my original video, so it was a common sentiment. But it was speculation at the time. So I was hoping with this video to show how cool a collection it is and maybe get some of those people to see it in a new light. Especially with how good GG3 came out, which we didn't know at the time. I'd love to see more in house jobs like this from them vs contract and bringing in talent. But you're right that's how it starts. The contracts pay the bills while these releases are a labor of love. Kind of like doing youtube. The real job pays the bills and allows for time to work on what we really want to create.

Well some of these Devs weren't bought in - M2 is their day job (director / composer M. Namiki has been there for years at this point, for example - as well as others from Compile, Treasure, Toaplan etc) but fair enough if you got a lot of those comments, I understand them: a bunch of obscure, easy to emulate 8-bit shooters might be a hard sell at full price and it's only a select kind of enthusiast who will simply have to play GG Aleste 3 right away. Speaking for myself I'd happily buy a real GG cart of it but in lieu of that I'm cool to wait for the ROM to be dumped. I'm just pleased it's a proper GG Aleste and not a glorified tech demo they knocked up in a fortnight.

If you never played before it is the best reason to watch! To see if you like the games or the collection and want to try it. Musha is incredible I am sure you will enjoy it. You can always download this collection when you are ready and play the new GG 3 which is also excellent. Maybe in a while they will release it as a download by itself. I am working on a Compile history next so there will be much more Musha and all Aleste games in there to see. Even many you may not have heard of.

I actually managed to get this collection and it was totally worth it. Power Strike 2 and the GG trilogy are all standouts. I mostly grew up with MUSHA and Space Megaforce, so I had no idea how good the Game Gear/Master System games really were.

I’m really glad to hear that. When this collection released a lot of people passed on it because all they could talk about were the 16bit games. That’s what they wanted in a collection as if there aren’t already so many releases and ways to play them. I was thrilled they did this instead and even fixed the SMS power strike 2 to run at the correct speed. Gave us no slowdown versions of all the games. And the new GG3 is awesome. So I always love to hear when someone grabbed this and enjoyed it. It’s one of my favorite collections from m2. I’d heard talk of them wanting to do an msx collection but I think they are just too busy.

This is still my favorite collection to come out last year and GG3 was my favorite new game of 2020. I don't think you'll be disappointed the work they did is a class act. The collection is still totally available on play asia as well so hopefully you didn't overpay over retail for a local seller.

This is still one of my all time fav releases of theirs and so glad you got a chance to grab it too. Being able to put some of these games in a no slowdown mode is icing on the cake and an extra challenge. Believe it or not, the first game isn't as insane as it first seems. Once you power up significantly you can rack up a massive amount of extends to power you through. There's a rhythm to it all and finding the most effective weapon for you. But it's definitely a gauntlet because it just never stops assaulting you, kind of like Zanac. And yeah, the new game is still my favorite new shmup in a very long time. I would love to see a collaboration like that again with older programming staff, maybe for a 16bit style release next. Imagine that.

Great video, about Aleste 2 on the MSX2, did you notice the Aleste History magazine that's packed with the game? There's a whole page about the MSX2 games, hinting about an Aleste Collection 2 with those games. Not sure they'd do a new MSX2 game for that second collection, but it'd still be pretty cool to have them re-released again, given the limited release they had in the past (Aleste 2 goes for $300 easily nowadays).

I am still trying to google translate some of it for myself yeah, it's dense and doesn't always pick up on the nuance. If they do plan a follow up that would be sweet as those are some very cool games. Maybe that's why they didn't release it here... they are planning an MSX collection or similar.

hello great vid!! i have 2 questions that i need help with. first is gg aleste 3 includes in the standard version from play asia which is avaliable now ? and second, does it include also this history booklet? if not where can i find it now ? thanks in advance. keep up the great work!!!

I can tell you that the physical release on Play Asia absolutely does contain all the games, including GG3. There is no version that doesn't have all games included. However, I'm not sure about the booklet. It may have been a certain version or special edition of the game ordered and it depends on what you select. But as far as the actual games, yes. Even the digital download contains everything you can play.

Absolutely adore your little diatribe at the end about how players should be willing to pay premium prices if they want to continue to get great content. I've been sharing it with my friends. Seeing so much discourse around the new Zelda game being $70 and I'm just thinking, god this game is easily worth $100 with how content-rich and polished it is. They're giving us a bargain.

Great review, will be getting this asap. Speaking of M2 and their other work Ketsui Deathtiny: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi, is it normal for the game being sold at high prices these days? Kinda big oof since 2018 seems very recent.

Not sure why the Ketsui port is big bucks. They even have a US release of it. You can always get it digital and avoid the high price if you’re not set on physical. Maybe physical copies were limited and it’s an amazing port, pretty much the best way to ever play the game again. So if you’re going to own a version of Ketsui that m2 port with all the extras is bar none the best. Not normal or common though no. Most m2 releases have plenty of stock to go around.

Just got this. GGA3 is pretty awesome. Gotta love that the plot of Power Strike II is the plot of Porco Rosso.

Hahaha I never thought about it that way. Now I’m always going to think of it. How old is that series? Maybe they were fans. GG3 was so good probably my fav new STG release all last year. We need more new games like that from old devs that get what made those games fun bit with a modern flair. Imagine if they made one with newer hardware in mind.

Great review! I wonder, how did you manage to get Power Strike II with M2 Widgets to fill the screen? The default is extremely small, the alternative is bigger but a wrong aspect ratio or custom without the M2 widgets. It's driving me crazy. Why is the aspect ratio different from Power Strike?

I’m sorry you had to go through all that trouble and go crazy over it. Don’t bother. I did it through video editing for RU-vid to fill more of the screen. The game won’t actually let you do that 🤦‍♂️.

Great video mate and I totally agree reference the price point for this game, so much talent, and so many features, games, and versions. I was totally blown away by what I saw and definitely want this collection but it’s proving hard as I was late watching your review and it seems most gamers have snagged them all 😂😂😂. I’ll get one in time for sure. It made The Hunt List, high priority.

Hey buddy glad you finally caught up with this one. Yeah it moved fast but I would think the basic game versions would still be available, just not the limited set (which I don't have either actually). If they are all gone maybe I am partially to blame 😂

Let's hope. Google translate worked great for me and I had no issues navigating the menus once I knew what was what. And making a Japan eshop account is super easy compared to the PS4 headache. But one with English menus would certainly be nice.

Part of me wonders if M2 was influenced to undertake this project after seeing some of the great pixel-art indie old-school inspired shmups that have come out like Zero Ranger, and were like, "This is really good, now hold my beer."

Lol, Now hold my beer is exactly what they did with GG3. To pull that off on a game gear, I shudder to think what's possible for them on an actual on 16bit, or more modern hardware. I guess we will find out when they release Aleste Branch and am hoping to not be disappointed.
