Slow beats are a fine filtering mechanism. You can line up 200 people with technical skills, run them through fast and slow beats, and a VERY small pinch of artists hold up through the slow ones, let alone shine like this. It's been said many times before, the artistry or soul is in the record hand, not the fader. This whole thing still kills me.
This is what I call proper scratching more control over the vinyl .its pure finesse . And there's not that much kitting compared to most of all upcoming scratch djs who go mad just kutting as fast as they can and hope for best . There's big lesson to be learnt here for upcoming turntablists.
FUCK. This is the nastiest scratch tape I've ever heard. I am literally making the ill face throughout the entire tape, some of these cuts are too much for me to comprehend.
oh my god, just had this as my soundtrack to a salvia trip. It was amazing, i was seeing all the scratches draw themselves through the air. Definitely tripping music
It's actually kinda sad to see how, 10 years later, nobody really topped those cats (Toad, D-styles, the Ruck, Mike Boo etcetera) technically OR musically. Like, nowhere near man. Face it and salute the peak of this art form.
/watch?v=hH_Og1wwg1g /watch?v=yVWTN5cZ9Jk /watch?v=OXwd6YjyOdQ /watch?v=9yGfjW1pC1o the list can go on an on! keep diggin theres plenty of talent out there
Levi Watts thanks for the reply brother. i checked 'em out and they're nice, but man... as i said... nowhere near. Still, plenty of talent out there.. i'm really feelin Ken One (japan), Deska (france), Scratchbusters (italy) among others.. but my point stays the same. 10 years difference my man, they still untouched.
+Jacopo Magrini The art of the DJ is closely following other music. The best guitar soloists were in the '70's and '80's. Some people can still bust out some awesome solos, but they don't need to anymore because that isn't what makes money. This is why so many rock groups nowadays have guitarists who stick to 2 or 3 chords and that's it...they in no way approach the technicality of the gods of the guitar because most people aren't really into that kind of stuff. Scratching will have to evolve to attract a wider audience or die out completely.
+Jacopo Magrini There's plenty out there doing it with fresh styles moving the artform forward... Deviant and Naive Ted, Slowpitch, Maed Meva, Jimmy Penguin are all innovating right now in terms of musicality. For straight skills, Chinmachine and Chile are right up there with the legends. Not exactly the golden age like it was but it's still out there!
So dope. The newer styles are cool and nice to look. Maybe we gotta get rid of the cameras for a bit and pull out the multitrack? and I miss the days of asisphonics and snatchcon.
I’m a proud owner of this, pharaohs of funk, articles of braille and bucktooth wizards and consider those and switchblade to be essential listening for anyone - and not just scratch nerds like myself! Toadstyle’s phrasing blows me away every time. Bring back the Toad.. and everyone else while your at it!
Rythm and Music, Rythm and Melody. I've scratched with my teeth, fingernails, on guitar and drumkit, the 3 EQ sliders on a $10 cassette deck (mad phases!) and of course the single belt driven at the Moms (slipmat cut from blanket). I could mimic vocal, play lead and get it singing. Freestyle. No beat ryhme or reason. The Sound of Music. Learn to dance play drums, sing and swing. The love this man has for his art is inspiring.
D-Styles, Toad and Excess are touring imminently, so make sure if you go to one of the gigs, you take a video camera and post it up on You Tube ;-) Scratch legends.
haha internet is a small place. Was just talking to diggla on reddit, I heard you might have some mp3s for me.... good to hear you guys decided to bring it back though!
"Attention all you hardcore scratch heads Toadstyle has put together "Switchblade Sermons ." This is a grimey cd-r of pure unadulterated scratching over beats from his upcoming record. If you want to satisfy your fix for hearing Toadstyle get busy on the cut, COP THIS CD as it will only be available through this site in limited quantity (only 100 are being made!) and at select performances. Cost is $10 + $5 shipping/handling, and if youre a scratch connoisseur it's well worth it !!! Peace .
@beat4battle word. and props for putting this up....so there are 2 versions of this? I am kinda salty though cause I had Alias - Articles of Braille on my channel and I guess Ricci took offense to me alluding he was Alias and "someone" claimed copyright infringement. What happened to spreading the scratch? lol
its very obvious that AI is listening 24/7 many times now i have been bumping an old school mix tape from the ages and the computers here that and recommend videos with some of the sounds from the tapes and the like !!,, this video was RECOMMENDED ON ME RU-vid after bumping a mix tape i got at a rave in the 505 from SWING KID !!,,
@blam1982 Yeah, I went toadstyle crazy and got one from him and then when sqratchattack did their version I got one of those too. There's a listing for both versions over at discogs. Anyone got any passes?
Tell me about it. Just said to Toad in a mail there "I think everyone's got desk-jobs now" Its a real shame. Anyway we tried to get it moving again with midicon.net peep it.
Serato, Midi Controller's, Mixman, Ableton Live, etc. -- all but eliminated the necessity for a dj to have skills. Market became saturated by scenster's and fakers. The masters could no longer support themselves from their art. Had to find other ways to make a living. The scratch game still exists but not in the public spot light as it once did. It takes place in basements where the public isn't welcome. And for good reason.
Yeah just the way it happened my friend. Responsibilities etc. We discussed it though and we're going to bring it back with the new design in the next couple of days. If you're on Twitter my handle is my @RexOrwell.
