We are switching things up a bit this year on the grass fed farm. Instead of finishing cattle, I will be going cow/calf. I recently received a bunch of bred cows/heifer and things are getting exciting. Lots to learn about cow/calf but I am looking forward to it.

I should never have left the farm community I was raised in. To bad it took 40 yrs to figure that out.

Beautiful farm mate. Alleys are the way to go for sure. Leaving water behind works too, for better trample but can damage in wet weather. I switched to cow calf and found the young cattle hate turning sharp corners like the one you got there. Trained the cows and calves to love stale bread, to the point holding cardboard tricks them too haha. They run over by call. So you call the whole herd over with the promise of bread, and generally they all arrive due to the commotion. Withhold the bread for 5 mins and they start hollering at you. And that brings any stray calves. Then open the gate to where ever.

We have the same problem moving fresh calves. We've learned to switch to moving every other or every third day and don't move the day of a new calf. We keep a common area in each pasture with water in it and Lane each section back to the common area. This common area serves as grazing when we have to stick to a section for an extra day due to calves being born. The common area is one full section in size but not counted as a section in terms of how many days of grazing we have in pasture.

I've learned to not move on the days of a new birth also. It's been very tricky to make sure everyone moves together. I find myself checking the whole past pasture after we move just to make sure no one is left behind. I like the idea of this common area, I will give that a try today as we just moved to a new pasture this morning and the water is setup in a lane now. Thanks for the suggestion. I guess ideally it would be better to calve slightly sooner when the grass is not waist high but then you have colder weather to worry about.

Grazing Acres Farm yeah, here we planted rye, oats, and clover for winter forage and it made for really tall grass during calving which didn't help. I'd rather have to search for the calf though and have the good grazing. Just a word of caution if you calve during lush growth, pull the pregnant cows off and put them on less rich forage. We didn't do that and it made for very fat mamas and some calving issues. Next year we will graze a day then feed a bale for a day and alternate till calving for the last month or so of pregnancy.

Excellent video Jason. Good music. Appreciate the info as you develop your farm. My wife and I just purchased a 153 acre farm in Alberta Canada and will be starting out with steers in spring 2019. We are first generation farmers. Thanks again for the info sharing.

Congrat's on new farm! That's great. How many steer will you be starting with? Do you have a rough number figured?

Grazing Acres Farm I was thinking between 25-30 head.And if things work out maybe increase 5 each year until we hit 40. That’s for the first 3 years. At the end of year 3 that’s when we want to start doing cow/ calf and we will either reduce the number of steers or just keep expanding.

It seems like when I start to get the hang of things they get switched but that keeps me diverse. I like having the calves on the farm but not sure how to feel about the coming bull. lol

It's taken a lot of management to get our pastures where they are now. Keep working at it and results will follow.

Keep eye on the heifers when they are ready to calf. I will check them over before moving the cow to see if anyone has had one. Keeping the water back sound like a good idea to.
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
I've been trying my best to check the heifers daily for signs of a new calves but it's hard when there is so many and they are all crammed in a paddocks. I have noticed that the cows are very vocal compared to the first time heifers when it come to communicate with the calves. The heifers do call the calves but nothing like the cows who have more experience raising young.

also, think about leave forage to get those gains. Gains are about breeding and knowelege gap issues normally. in relationship to your own land.

Looks great Jason! Awesome grass growth. I'm glad that you are getting a chance to grow your skill set on someone else's dime. It looks like the land could handle a greater stocking rate. What do you think? (I know that the grass will slow down later in the season) I looked up "Lowline Cows"_ very interesting. Best of success this season!
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
Yeah the grass is way ahead of the herd but we are no longer concerned about that. It just means we are banking grass, right? The goal is to keep mobbing and to keep everyone together. I may experiment more with holistic grazing this year, where you graze higher laying areas while you have rain and lower areas when there is little to no rain. In theory, it makes sense that the grass is the lower areas would continue to grow as the rainfall runs onto it, as where the higher areas would dry out and grass would grow slower. The lowlines are a blast to raise. I have finished a few over the years. They maintain their weight during winter with little inputs. Take a minute and look up "Pharo bulls", that's what is coming in July.
@johnbeckman8916
@johnbeckman8916 6 лет назад
Thanks for the Pharo bulls heads up. That grazing process makes sense so that the areas you graze have adequate time to drain properly without the trampling of the herd. Experimenting and learning new stuff every year, right? BUCKEYES look like a powerhouse this year! +++++

Appreciate your willingness to share as you learn. I want to get into cow/calf some day, and you're videos are helping me get there. How many acres of forage do you have to run these cow/calves on?
@GrazingAcresFarm

The farm is 176 acres and 130 are grazable. Glad the videos are helpful.

Another great video. Man, I cannot get over the grass you have. Mob grazing must really work. I’m a weekend rancher. I’m trying to figure out how to do mob grazing with one week turns. Any advice?
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 4 года назад
Yeah, I was very impressed with the grass that grows on this farm when I first looked at it. At times the grass is so thick it's like walking in a couple feet of snow. Mob grazing does work when done correctly but it takes practice. One week turns..... How many head do you have? How many acres? Why only move once a week? Did you know they make battery operated poly wire gates? You set a timer for when you want gate to open and once the herd gets used to it they move theirselves. I have never used one because I have time to move the herd manually but I have seen videos of them and they seem to work well.

Do you worry about introducing disease into your herd when you have so many cows coming and going onto your farm? How do you reduce that risk? It could wipe you out. Thanks for videos
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 5 лет назад
Whenever new cattle are brought onto the farm they are kept in the corral area for a period of time. I do this so I can observe them and make sure everyone is healthy before they join the herd.

If a momma leaves her calf behind, sometimes you can get her attention by making a bawling calf sound. Stick your tongue out of your mouth and yell. I have had first the mommas, then the heifers, then bulls and sheep all come back looking for a calf. This particular calf is a stinker and likes to ignore momma's calls. Moving long distances when shifting paddocks definitely makes it harder for calves to stay with the herd.
@troypuckett5502
@troypuckett5502 6 лет назад
Also, leave your paddock wires (polywire) up high while the calves are young. They need to be able to leave the paddock to go rest or just get away from bullies without getting shocked. If your wire is too low, they will inevitably get out and then not want to come back in to nurse.
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
Very good information, thanks! I will give the bawl call a try and see what the results are. I have been hooking to the highest point on the poly stakes just for the reasons you mentioned, plus it actually kinda dangerous for all the calves to laying in the paddock the cattle are grazing, glad you pointed that out.

with that many cows they might start dropping multiple calves every day for weeks, its not the end of the world if you just move them once a week if that happens

@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
We have 135 acres that are grazable.
@blackcatbarnyard584
@blackcatbarnyard584 6 лет назад
That would be awesome to have that much. Are you leasing this or own the land? How much are you charging for custom grazing the cows/pairs?
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
The land is leased and that is paid by the guy I custom graze for. It's an awesome setup really, he live about 60 miles away and I am only about 1//8 mile from the farm. I am even closer to the farm than the land owner. Now that I have cattle on the farm I pay a rental fee for the grass my cattle eat and I am paid by the hour for custom grazing. I only get a couple hours a day in grazing chores so I am not raking in $$ by the hour. I have tried to get him to pay by the head but he wants to cover my every minute involved in working the cattle. Now that we are cow/calf he wants me to spend more time watching the herd so that will add a little more time. We are both happy with how things work but that main thing in keep everyone happy is good communication.
