If you have a pre-existing condition, such as type II diabetes, it may be difficult to switch Medicare Supplement plans since you could be denied coverage.

More and more states are adding birthday rule that allows change in a 30 day window without underwriting.

I am 69 and have original Medicare and a group supplemental plan through my former employer. Now my employer has notified me that they are looking at moving retirees to a MA plan next year, which I don’t want. Would I have to do underwriting to buy my own Medigap plan, or is this guaranteed issue if my current group plan is dropped?

If doctors and hospitals sign contracts with these Medicare Advantage Programs, I would think these contracts could be dated in such a way that they go to an open enrollment time period. What I mean is that your doctor or your hospital can't leave the advantage program mid-year when they have sign a contract which goes to a specific date at minimum and any chang s in their cobtracts cannot occur until the ipen enrollment time. It seems that this is happening a lot where you get into the program and then all the sudden your doctor and hospital decide they're going to leave. If these contracts are dated properly and created properly then they should run with the same time period of open enrollment. So even if a doctor signs up on a contract to join the advantage program then their contract goes from the date of signing, one year plus, all the way to the open enrollment time. Then their contract would renew each year at that time. I would think that would get rid of all these problems of losing doctors and hospitals mid-year.

I have a quick question about your video last year, “Why I Will Never Take SS At 65” You said that full retirement age is basically full benefits age. My FRA is 67. If I take SS at 63 instead of 62, I get an increase, likewise if I take it at 64 instead of 63, I get an increase, and if I take it at 68 instead of 67, I get an increase, and so on until 70. Since I don’t get an increase if I wait til 71, wouldn’t my true full (100%) retirement age be 70?

What if I move to another state that doesn’t offer Supplemental coverage for the state I am moving to? And it is between March and October.

Supplements are nationwide even if the company you have is not there.

@@MedicareonVideo Thank you. Does that mean they have to continue to cover me and cannot cancel my current plan? This is an important question as I am Type 2 diabetic and am fearful if they drop me I will may be denied and never get supplemental insurance in the new state I plan on moving to because of underwriting,

@@MedicareonVideo Thank you very much. Moving from PA to NC in late August. Was worried since I have Highmark BS which doesn’t have presence in NC at this time. I assume once the Open Enrollment begins in October. I can try and change and possibly get a better rate with an insurance company that has a presence in NC. Got your number, will certainly call. Thanks again.

If you want to switch from a MA to a Medigap plan do you have to wait for open enrollment? My state allows those on a Medigap plan to switch to another medigap plan around their birthday but that wouldn't help my situation.

Yes- Medicare Advantage requires you to wait until one of the enrollment periods. Medigap plans can switch any month of the year with underwriting in most states. Certain states also allow a switch around your birthday or policy anniversary.

Can someone answer a question for me? I am still working past my full retirement age while collecting SS, and last January 1st, I cancelled my work insurance and now have Medicare Plan A and Plan B. I now want to get Plan D and Plan N. Will I face some kind of penalty for not getting them sooner? If so, will this penalty apply if I wait until Open Enrollment?

My mother in law was in the hospital for 3 days. She has MEDICARE PARTS A & B. Kaiser is her PART B. They say she has a co-pay but I thought PART A (inpatient) was free. Do you have any insight? Does the $1632 apply for co-pay?

The premium for Part A is $0 for most people, but the Part A deductible in 2024 is $1632 which covers days 1-60.

Looking into Medicare and learning. Don’t want MA. So if you take Medicare w a medical plan and you have health issues. You technically cannot change once you pick a plan because no company wants a sick person. You can’t just move plans is this true. The underwriting will stop you from moving. So what I’ve learned is what you start with is technically what you are forced to stay with. Yes or no ???

It is a little grey- most states do require medical underwriting to change plans. A lot of states, however, have adopted birthday rules where they allow enrollees to change once per year to a plan of equal or lesser benefits with no underwriting. It all depends on where you live.
